Yes... Britain leased Hong Kong for 99 years and basically made it what it is today.Kendamu wrote:For 100 years?Sun_Wukong wrote:mm, yeah, so was America, damn you.Ash wrote:

No. That's not what I was asking. I was asking if America was owned by the Brits for 100 years. I mean, by the time we actually became a country we finalized it by fighting the British.Yi Xing Long wrote:Yes... America was colonialized by England, France and the Netherlands at various points from the early 16th century onwards. In 1763, Britain won the seven years war effectively gaining complete control over North America. I think you'll know how the rest of the story goes.
Anyway, speaking first hand from my adventures in Hong Kong, I can assure you that bootlegs in some way fund the Triads. Doesn't mean all Triads are bad people, certain groups invest in the school system etc.
As i'm sure people have said, with a series like Dragon ball there is no need to obtain bootlegs. Official releases exist in various countries and i'm still keeping my fingers crossed that one day Funi may obtain the Dragon Box footage.

Because that is way too much work for someone who's main audience is the Chinese market.Raki wrote:I don't understand why the Chinese bootleggers won't import the season sets, rip the subtitles from them, and put the subs on the Dragonbox footage they have.
Not that I support bootlegs.

I also forgot to add the audio in the blue bootlegs is in stereo, for someone like me who can't stand mono it's another plus.
I always did say I'd kill for a good Dragonball release!Jerseymilk wrote:So....essentially, you're okay with helping to fund organized crime, such as murder

Because English-speaking people probably buy their products? There have been instances of official Japanes DVDs having English subtitles, too.Sun_Wukong wrote:Um, I have no idea what youre talking about. Why on earth would Chinese releases come with English subs?Ash wrote:True when concerning Dragon Ball DVD's. This is the reason why I'll never get rid of my bootlegs. They have a great up mixed stereo sound. As for subtitles, I only use them when I watch with my brother so he will understand, and He'll let me know when something didn't make sense. So for me these 'bluebox' sets are perfect. If Funimation released sets like this I would buy them for sure, but as we know that company just isn't capable. We've had to deal with Japanese mono (if we got it at all) since mid to late 90's. That is just unforgivable.NeptuneKai wrote:I also forgot to add the audio in the blue bootlegs is in stereo, for someone like me who can't stand mono it's another plus.

Yeah I hear that, the only bad thing is I'm embarrassed to let my friend watch them with subtitles on. He's not the fastest reader so he has to read the subtitles and on top of that decode them a little bit, I'm not sure how enjoyable that would be for him.mrkaizoku wrote:This is the reason why I'll never get rid of my bootlegs. Another minus as mentioned previously is the menu error where if you try to fast froward past the intro at anything more then 2X speed it sucks you back into the first episode of the disc.

Way off topic but, some of the Triad discussion got me tinking of mentioning this dream I had last night... various complex plot stuff was involved, but the part of interest here is that at one point, Majin Buu and some anthropomorphized Bee/Pan person are hanging out with the Planeteers, and a couple criminals come in and one of them eats Buu... we later find out that that guy was a member of the Chinese Mafia, and one of the main goals of his criminal ativity was to fund a private space program...
Ahem.
The first copy of DBZ Legends I bought was probably a bootleg, since it 1) lacked the playstation "black dsk back", 2) lacked all but the in-fight music, 3) glitched a lot at places like the intro animation... 4) finally just stopped working for no apparent reason. 'course, I had no idea about any of this since I didn't even see the thing until it arrived and I was 13 at th time...
I go the Saturn version a while back, but only got it to work this past christmas since I got an action replay thingy. Which basically confirms to me th whole ligit=better thing. (Except the flying sounds on the Saturn are really freaking annoying and more distracting than useful...
).
DVDs... I am in no position to comment on. Picture quality means little to me. (Though a combination of me not interested in season1 redubbed after what I've seen of it, and the whole uproar surrounding it, and my copies of the Ocean dub leave me not interested in the season sets...).
... What the heck was I saying? Oh, right. Bootlegs are bad. FUNimation is confusing. I like VHS.

Erm... Not to be rude... But wasn't the show RECORDED in mono? That seems like a really retarded thing to complain about.NeptuneKai wrote:I also forgot to add the audio in the blue bootlegs is in stereo, for someone like me who can't stand mono it's another plus.
Of course, the TV in my room tends to only output audio through the left speaker, so my opinion is invalid.

I don't agree with bootlegging, but... Part of me wants to ignore it, considering how hard is seems to get a competent release of the series out of FUNimation.
And, no, I don't consider paying $20 for 3 episodes to be "competent."

Just because it was recorded in Mono doesn't mean I have to enjoy it in mono. I think mono sucks and luckily the people who did the Dragonboxes thought so too because they redid the audio in stereo too.Hao_Kaiser wrote: Erm... Not to be rude... I actually own two sets of DragonBall bootlegs. One that I got from "China" and one that was made in the US somewhere.
I am not promoting Bootlegs, but the "Chinese" one is very high quality, it came in a sealed shrink wrapped package, The DVD's themselves are in a "steel" case, that had a cardboard slip cover over it with an overall nice design. The quality of the episodes is above that of Funimation, and the menus are the exact same as the dragonbox. The subtitles are actually ok, with only a few terrible blunders here and there. Oh, and the DVD's are real printings, not DVDrs.
The other one, ergg, It came in a generic 5 DVD case you can buy at Walmart, the DVD's are obvious DVDrs. The episodes are ripped from Funi DVDs, and the quality ranges from normal to super shit with some kind of bizarre Ghosting problem. The first disc has something like 20 episodes on it, but the second had 8. What the hell, spread that shit out so the quality isn't so bad. Also the box art was so deplorable, that I made my own.
I only bought these because I was unwilling to spend $150+ for the each of the remaining Dragonball sets I was missing. I think the two bootlegs sets cost me like 50 bucks combined. I was pleasantly surprised with the Chinese one, but the American made one is awful. So buyer beware. Oh, and don't be like me.

However when they competently released a product said companies couldn't pull off I will support their product. In any event I bought enough Funimation shit to fill a large landfill.chibi_goten wrote: You're condoning piracy and ripping off the companies that have produced this show for you, show a little respect and support your fandom!
Edit: Anyway I'm done talking about this now, I'm probably already going to be banned for talking so positively about something Mr.EX doesn't agree with so if anyone wants to take it into the PM's that'd be rad.

Why do people make such a big deal over the episode previews? Is it that people like the "Hi, I'm Goku, blah-blah yackity-shmackity" line so much, or what? Mean on the sets, makes sense they aren't there as you're watching it straight through.coola wrote:Not that i support bootlegs, but if they have subbed episodes previews?
