Times where you prefer the dub?

Now, this really doesn't apply to people who actually prefer the dub on a regular basis, but I guess you guys can just post about those "exceptions" to the rule where you'd rather watch the Japanese version instead of the dub.

For the people who prefer the Japanese version of Dragonball Z, is there anyone else out there who enjoys the dub on a few specific occasions? I've got a few myself:

1) When watching the Ocean dub of DBZ movies 1-3. While I enjoy the Japanese version a bit more, the Ocean cast was my favorite American cast. Combine that with the fact that the movies are pretty accurately translated and they kept the Japanese BGM and it's pretty much the best thing out there for me beyond just watching it in Japanese.

2) I enjoy, for nostalgia's sake, watching the old edited Ocean dub of Seasons 1 and 2. The edits make me laugh (as opposed to making me cringe like they used to before there were uncut version available) , I like the cast, and it was what got me into DBZ in the first place.

3) When I have friends over at my place and they want to watch DBZ, I actually find it less annoying to watch the dub with them. Most of them are dub fans, they don't care that it's in 16:9, they don't care that it's not Dragonbox quality of video, they don't care about things like "Pop goes the weasel," there's a lot of nostalgia on their part with the Texas cast, and they're so weirded out by the Japanese cast that every time a Son family member speaks, Krillin speaks, or someone makes a random noise that Americans don't make they have to make fun of it for about five minutes. So, it's actually less annoying to watch the dub with them when I'm in the mood to seriously watch the show.

Also, it helps that the dub now comes with the Japanese BGM. Freeza can sound like a granny, Vegeta can be a chain smoker, and Kaio-sama can can sound like Goku with his mouth full and I won't care nearly as much as long as the right music is playing.

4) When I'm trying to go to sleep while watching DBZ. If I watch it in Japanese with subs, I can't sleep because I'm reading the subs. If I watch it in Japanese without subs, I try to listen to the Japanese as practice so my language skills don't get too rusty. If I watch the dub at a low volume so I can catch most of the words without any real effort, I'll fall asleep more quickly once it gets to one of the long, drawn-out portions of a storyline that only took like a page of the manga to depict.

I wholeheartedly agree with your #4, and that is where I prefer the dub. If I find that I can't sleep, I pick any random dvd from the Freeza saga and set it on marathon. Guaranteed REM sleep in 30 minutes or my money back.

I thought Ocean Group's dubs of the first three movies were fantastic. Especially Dead Zone. I preferr Drummond's Garlic Jr to Chuck Huber's. McNeil's Piccolo is also just so awesome.

Actually it was Don Brown who did Garlic Jr. Jaken on Inuyasha.

Anyway, here was my answer:

At first I was a fan of the Funimation dub, but I liked these japanese versions of these scenes so much that they converted my to the japanese version! They are amazing!

I can very safely say that there are no times I prefer the dub. Most of it I can't even stomach watching, let alone liking...

Absolutely agreeing with you on the first three movies, especially Dead Zone. I'm just so in love with hearing what Ocean could do with an accurate translation and good music. Especially Scott... I love Furakawa, but I'm just in love with Scott's young Pic. So many good memories. And Surfer Goku makes me laugh so hard I almost always end up just letting the dvd play in English when it goes on.

I still have a fondness for the dub of the original set of eps because of Ocean- mainly Ian and Brian and Scott. But I don't prefer it as a whole because of the terrible everything-else that came with the English version. I still bought those old Pioneer dvds for those three guys though.

And I always end up watching the last eight seconds or so of movie seven in English because of the fish. Otherwise, I always prefer the Japanese.

Couldn't agree more, Funimation took a funny scene, and made it hilarious, that line cracks me up every time.

Also Cell's somewhat subdued "Ah. I'm losing." line after he gets kicked or whatever by Mr. Satan.

Does anybody happen to know the episode number (out of wack Funimation numbering) that the recap of the Cell games appears in?
Or even the DVD its on? I had a quick look at my DVDs last night, but couldnt figure out what ep it was in.

209 I think... just before the middle of the episode.

The english title is "The World Tournament."

So unconvincing, so brilliant.
I remember Brian Drummond doing the "I wish I were him!" line, if only that dub was on DVD...

Yeah, Scott McNeil was an amazing Piccolo. He couldve been so much better. I know the UK dub went back to the Ocean cast, but the music was worse than Faulconer's.

I always liked Vegeta turning SSJ against android 19 better in english, I think that the SSJ Vegeta theme is one of Falcouners best tunes, and I think Sabat did the screaming part way better than Horikawa. I actually find Horikawa's scream to be extremely disappointing.

I haven't played it in Japanese yet, but Sean Schemmel's Goku in Burst limit, especially the SSJ vs Freeza scene is fucking awesome. Plus for some reason or another, someone finally handed him an accurate script because he refers to himself as Son Goku, and says Kaio-Ken, not Kayo-Ken.

I also really like Peter Kelamis as Goku, Screw you Ian Corrlet Fan Boys, Goku number 2 rules. (Ian Corrlet is good too...)

I've always liked Sean's Goku, post-season 3. I've always just chalked the mispronunciations to the voice directors not knowing/caring, not Sean's ability. He's probably my favorite non-Japanese Goku voice, short of Stephanie Nadolny. Ever seen him as 18-year-old Goku? I love it, the less gruff version of his Goku voice.

But that's a bit off topic, since it isn't a point where I prefer the dub. . or the Japanese for that matter. Like them pretty equally.

First two are realy good. Haven't seen Tree of Might yet. Only thing in Dead Zone that bothered me was they changed two of my favorite lines. Not in a big way, just reworded so they do not sound quite as cool. The one where Piccolo confronts Garlic Junior and Kami's speech about Garlic Junior regretting having eternal life.
