Dragon Ball Super: Manga Chapter 80 - Official Discussion Thread

I still think the thing that kills the momentum for this arc is the month long wait for each chapter. I think a lot of people's concern would be dealt with if we were dealing with a weekly schedule. Because aside from that, I"m enjoying what I'm reading. I like the fights. I actually dig Granolah. And for now, that's enough for me.

Because I also largely believe that this was always meant to be a prelude to the "real story" that this thing has been setting up.

Here is my Dragon Ball Super chapter 80 full summary that I can share with you.

Spoiler:

- Chapter 80: "Gas Vs. Granolah 2".
- Chapter starts where the previous one ended. Gas is enraged by Granolah's attacks.
- Gas increases his Ki and goes down to the ground to fight Granolah. He says that he can see now all Granolah's tricks.
- Gas attacks Granolah but Granolah manages to move faster and avoids all Gas' attacks.
- Granolah kicks Gas but he resists the attack, although he is still angry.
- Oil says that even though Gas is more powerful, he still loses in ability against Granolah. Maki says that it's not the end yet because Gas is still standing.
- Gas and Granolah attack each other several times at the same time, it seems that Gas little by little manages to see Granolah's movements more clearly. Granolah seems tired.
- Vegeta says Granolah is taking too long to finish Gas off and Gas is getting used to Granolah's attacks.
- Gas finally manages to hit Granolah with a hook to the chin, then he attacks Granolah confidently.
- However, a Granolah's copy appears from the side and kicks Gas. Another Granolah's copy appears behind Gas and kicks him to the sky.
- 8 more Granolah's copies appear in the sky around Gas and start shooting Ki projectiles to Gas with his fingers.
- Gas resists the attack and goes for Granolah's copies, hiting them all. He then back to the ground.
- Gas says that using a technique like that is stupid, because creating so many copies splits the power too much.
- Granolah's copies try to attack Gas, who asks Granolah if this is a desperate attack.
- Gas creates "Ki spears" with his fingers that pierce Granolah's copies abdomens. Granolah's copies are trapped.
- Suddenly, original Granolah appears right in front of Gas with his fingers charged with Ki. He was waiting for the moment when Gas could not defend himself to attack him.
- Granolah cancels his copy technique to recover 100% of his strength and attacks Gas with a powerful Ki projectile.
- Gas goes through several rocks and is threw a great distance, then Gas falls unconscious into a lake/river. Oil and Maki fly to his rescue.
- Granolah falls to his knees, exhausted and bleeding. Goku wonders what's wrong, Vegeta says that the damage Gas has done to his copies also affects Granolah's original body.
- Monaito runs to Granolah to help him, but Granolah tells him to leave because the fight is not over yet.
- Oil and Maki save Gas. Granolah's attack has done a lot of damage to Gas.
- Elec appears behind them and asks Gas what's wrong, since it doesn't look like him. Granolah is surprised to see Elec.
- Maki asks Elec if he formulated the wish correctly, since Gas can't handle Granolah.
- Elec tells her the wish was made correctly and that Gas is the strongest warrior in the universe without a doubt.
- Elec: "The problem is...". Elec takes off Gas' pendant from his forehead. Oil and Maki are in shock
- Elec: "It's useless for you to be the strongest warrior in the universe if your power is sealed. Now you can bear it, release your "instinct" Gas."
- Oil wonders if it's the right choice. Maki says Gas failed 40 years ago because of this and that he won't be able to control himself.
- Gas starts to lose control, Elec tells him to resist since now he's not the same as before.
- Gas' energy is out of control, then Gas flies away.
- As he flies, Gas' body changes. His musculature increases a lot (like the SSJ Dai-san Dankai) breaking his clothes (only resists part of his pants).
- In addition, 2 big horns grow downwards from the sides of his forehead (they look like walrus' tusks but on the forehead).
- Monaito is shocked when he sees Gas. He says that it's the same form Gas adopted 40 years ago when Bardock cornered him.
- Monaito: "Gas abandoned his own "ego" to change". Granolah is in shock too, he can't believe that Gas kept an ace up his sleeve like this.
- Gas attacks Granolah, who dodges the attack at the limit. However, Gas manages to grab Granolah's leg and hits him with an electric shock.
- Then Gas slams Granolah to the ground and throws him into the woods. Granolah gets up but it looks like his eye is injured.
- Gas grabs Granolah's head and slams him into the ground again, but this time Gas pushes him inside the ground.
- Goku and Vegeta watch astonished what's happening.
- Gas gets out from inside of the ground in the back of Goku and Vegeta, he's still holding Granolah's head.
- Gas throws Granolah to the ground, Granolah can barely move. Then Gas lands at Granolah's feet and starts punching him in the face with violence. Maki is paralyzed.
- Goku says they must do something or Gas is going to kill Granolah. Vegeta asks Monaito what Bardock did to stop Gas in the past.
- Monaito: "I'm sorry... I lost consciousness and I didn't see what he did...".
- Maki and Oil arrive where Gas is. Maki tells Gas not destroy everything and he must stay conscious.
- Gas stops for a moment but then releases Granolah and hits his brothers. Then he starts banging his head against a rock.
- Elec also arrives. Oil and Maki tell him that it's useless, Gas has gone crazy.
- Elec tells them not to worry, since the strongest warrior in the universe also has the power to control himself.
- Gas flies out again, this time he attacks Goku and Vegeta. Gas kicks Vegeta and slams him into some rocks, then he starts punching him.
- Goku tries to defend Vegeta but Gas stops his punch. When Gas looks at Goku, he remembers something.
- A little flashback starts with the last moments of Gas' battle against Bardock.
- Bardock looked at Gas just like Goku looks at him in the present. We see that Bardock is injured and his armor is badly damaged.
- Bardock accumulated a large amount of Ki on his right hand in the form of a sphere (like the attack he uses against Frieza in Anime Special).
- Bardock attacked Gas (who was using his current form out of control) with a huge Ki blast. This part is a tribute to Goku's final attack to Frieza on Namek, before the planet exploded.
- Back to the present. Although Gas was stopping Goku's punch, his memories has made him lose his stability and Goku's punch affects him.
- Gas is sweating a lot, he seems confused or scared after remembering Bardock.
- Elec appears flying on top of Gas. Elec: "Gas, remember. You will never lose again, right?"
- Gas reacts to the words of his brother. Gas' body changes again and he regains consciousness.
- Gas returns to his adult form, although he keeps the horns on his forehead. In addition, he creates a new suit (just like the old one).
- Elec: "Good Gas. That's why you're the best little brother in the universe. Now, kill them."
- Gas looks at his brother and nods his head...

Thanks again for the summary! Some neat-sounding and not entirely expected things mixed in with some of the things we anticipated, there, and more generally things have moved on in a few important ways while keeping the fight central, so it seems better-balanced than Chapter 79 from the look of the summary. Looking forward to reading it.

Oh, come on... I'd like to see Bardock's whole fight, not just the last part. Oh well, still glad I'll be able to see something at least.

It may be a nitpick but hopefully his armor is damaged in a different way than the way it's always been represented. It'd be boring if it's damaged in the exact same way it will be again two years after that.

This chapter sounds like more of the same. All fighting with an IV drip of story. Meh. And Gas having a limiter doesn't sit well with me for some reason. Dragging out the fight even more, unless it leads to an interesting situation, I suppose.

On a side note, although I'm liking this arc less as time goes on, I don't dislike the characters themselves. I wonder how things would have gone if Granollah, Monaito and the Heeters had appeared in earlier arcs, with no Dragon Ball instant power shenanigans?

I won't make a full judgement without the final chapter, but...

This seems to be part of Elec once again manipulating his brother. The thing most important to Gas is fulfilling his role as the muscle of Heata. Reminding Gas of that purpose is enough to get through to "unsealed" Gas. This doesn't seem like a straight-played version of Goku reminding Kuririn he doesn't have a nose...if that's what you meant.

Technically, isn't the phrasing of the wish (which, interestingly, Macki double-checks with Elec here) to be "#1 in the Universe"?

In which case, quite apart from the psychological dimension batistabus highlights, wouldn't Elec's inference just be pretty logically straightforward in any case? Gas can hardly be #1 in the Universe if he can't even use that power. It's a rather different implication than just being "strongest".

At the very least, there's expanded multiform lore. I'm not sure I'm into anything else about the chapter. Was disappointed to see more fan-servicey references. That's not usually a criticism I make but it seems unnecessary for this chapter.

Oh well, take everything I say with a pinch of salt since I haven't read the chapter yet.

The Gas and Elec bond is actually the most interesting bit now that I think about it. I wish the fight were done though.

I'm trusting and on board with the summary. Seems like more fun fight choreography is in store with Granolah's clones, and the abandonment of ego is thematically on point with what the rest of the arc has done. As expected, more to bring Goku closer to his past in whatever way too, as parallel to Granolah and Vegeta's complicated relationship with theirs. I don't expect or want any redemption of Bardock, but that isn't the interesting part here so much as having to acknowledge a lost familial connection at all is a wrinkle for Goku.

Even if this is heading into the genuine climax for another short/compact arc a la the earlier ones of Super, I'm pretty satisfied with it. I don't know that I love Toriyama's seeming tendency now adays to go for two-act storylines, with one act being all setup and the other all action (most obvious in Broly, but even the ToP--which I quite enjoy in the manga--fits into this), but that misgiving and interest in some longer, more windy plots aside, I've enjoyed what we've gotten here. That's also basically the mode I assumed all of Super would be in, with really only Toyotaro's stint helming the Moro arc--which I did not love, but which I appreciated in that vein at least--giving me any reason to think future storylines might do otherwise.

I think if anything, it's just a little jarring to be going back to that structure, after each storyline had wound up being progressively longer than the last.

My various thoughts based on Redon's summary

I thought the last arc kinda pointed out power for power sake doesn't work.

With Angel Moro being unable to control power he didn't train for so I think this has made the arc feel a bit disjointed at the levels of power on display here with no handicap to the fighting.

I suppose I can kinda buy that form is Gas using his peak, and that the wish took in to account him using his peak to be the strongest. But equally Oil and Macki are surprised by him using this form so it doesn't feel like a calculated move for Elec to take this limiter off of Gas' head.

I'm torn about the limiter since it does feel like a rehash of Broly more in line with OG Broly, but considering we had 3 films of OG Broly, then Kale, then Broly done again, it feels a bit overdone.

Also must say it does seem a bit odd that Elec would wait 40 years to try and harness this extra power Gas has. I also suppose it means Gas is a mutant amongst his family? or are we going to see Horny transformed Elec before the end.

I'm hoping that Elec's task he was off to do isn't another case of 'Moro's third wish' and is something substantial (since I feel he could've just done his own jailbreak after being free and eating a few planets). I hope that its not just a personal escape contigency, since tbh with 10 Zuno questions and then making a wish should see them in control of the situation.

I don't see really how Goku or Vegeta can replicate what Bardock did since Monaito conveniently missed that part (yet seems aware Bardock did something clever to beat Gas before). Gas or the Heeters blurting this out would be disatisfying. One notion I have for how to proceed I depends on when Oatmeal came into existence (don't think it was present in the flashback), but if it had observed then we could maybe see Goku or Vegeta use Oatmeal after Granolah loses? But then I suppose Oatmeal could just tell Granolah. Granolah using Saiyan technique to end this conflict would thematically show he's over his single minded grudge.

Here we get confirmation that the Granolah clones are much weaker and Granolah takes damage from them being damaged. If we assume each clone is a direct % split from Granolah, then how do we make sense that UI Goku lost to 50% Granolah and Granolah didn't seem to receive any damage from that before facing off against Vegeta.


So we get two different forms for Gas this chapter alone, which makes 4 different versions of Gas? Plus we can assume that he had a small version of this horned form vs Bardock, rather than grown up? Since Elec is surprised by big Gas?

Goku beat 50% Granolah, but then that clone disappeared, meaning that the power integrated itself back into the main Granolah as described in Redon's summary with the clones coming back together for Granolah to do that blast.

Granolah probably did still receive damage from Goku, but it seems that the clones in this chapter actually took some sort of major piercing wounds so it was more pronounced.

Goku will notice the same weakness that Bardock noticed, and will take advantage of it. Nobody told Bardock the weakness, it was his awareness and skill

Guys, reading the full spoilers from Twitter, it seems that Gas became like the Incredible Hulk after removed his pendant from the forehead.

It means that every Heeter surely can transform in huge monsters and pass to their "true form"?



In fact if you notice:

- In the first confrontation between Granolah and Oil, the last one managed to fight with a monstrous stamina even taking a lot of hits. Until now, every minor/secondary character were K.O. by the strongest ones with one or two attacks. It's true that Granolah did not want to kill them, but surely Oil has a very huge strength (as Maki and surely Elec).

- Granolah hit Maki and Oil after the recovery from Senzu beam, but they still stand even if their power gap is huge.

While I like the themes and the ideas in play here, the actual execution seems very derivative. I can't bother anyone who feels they've seen all of this before.
