Do Japanese fans care what foreigners do?

Post by Super Sonic » Wed Jun 11, 2008 7:41 pm

Know not too many Japanese fans on here, but thought I'd ask do you guys know whether Japanese fans of DB/Z have any real opinions over foreign versions of the show? Know if they get mad about US dub major or minor changes, or if they're usually like how Americans feel about foreign versions of American cartoons and couldn't give a rip?

I doubt they would care. They have their versions of stuff, and it usually comes out right. If I was getting mines, I wouldn't give a fuck about anybody else.
The series doesn't start with the arrival of Raditz. Stop being lazy and watch Dragonball.

Yeah, I wouldn't really care how my favorite US show is treated in a different country.

LOL. That's kind of weird. I guess the added dialouge would help out anybody in Japan who had know idea what Batman was about (That cartoon was so awesome. I loved it as a kid.)

^I think the fact that I want to watch things in their original language applies here more than ever. I'd take the English Batman anyday.
Be grateful the filler in Dragon Ball doesn't suck like the 3rd arc of Rurouni Kenshin.

When the coumputer says that stuff abuot the Batmobile, it reminded me so much of the Tree Of Might when the pod grew legs and there was a coumputer talking that wasn't in the original version.

Atleast when Japan dubs a foreign show they keep the origional music.

Well, this is a Japanese TMNT series, but the weird thing about this one is it looks like Kageyama did the song for this one:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MQAQohS0On4

Not sure how this contributes, but I though some of you might be interested in the fact that, the opening theme is sung by Kageyama. It starts around 2:00 in the video.

Amazing how a bit of Japanese narration turns Batman into Super Sentai.

Yeah, and the Japanese one is way more awesome. Another example of this is the Japanese X-Men opening (from the 90s! Remember?!?!)

Ours: http://youtube.com/watch?v=s6KPt-QKDFU
Japanese: http://youtube.com/watch?v=yUjJywCyY2A&feature=related
Japanese 2nd (yes they made two): http://youtube.com/watch?v=DDtHh5Sw79I&feature=related

The Japanese intros almost make me forget how crappy that cartoon was. It only the Japanese reanimated all of it.

Final verdict? Japanese intros are traditionally crazy awesome.

For further viewing, the most awesome TV intro of all time.

I'm aware of the Japanese TMNT OVA, but TMNT as a whole isn't made in Japan, furthermore TMNT 2003, was made by 4kids entertinment (one of the only competent things they ever did).

The seires's creators are Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird, americans.

So in short, just because there WAS a TMNT OVA (Which is much closer related to the 1980s show as it has rocksteady and bebop in it), doesn't mean the show originates in Japan.

That Japanese TMNT theme made it sound more like generic Japanese action anime. And the X-Men theme is a classic.

G.I. JOE! A REAL AMERICAN HERO! *insert Japanese song* ...I'm sorry...XD But that just hit me in the funny bone. But yeah, every culture will try to make a show more relatable, if possible, unless the original goal is accuracy...reminds me of that clip of Japanese Ed, Edd n Eddy I saw.

Yea, I neither pay attention to or care about how US shows are preceived in other countries. I'm sure that a Japanese fan of Dragon Ball probably thinks the same.

I couldn't agree with you more, It's a great series, I never even noticed 4kids had anything to do with it until I watched the credits.

...But then they fucked it up with "Fast Forward"

The only real gripe I had with Fast Forward was "out in the open"-ness of the series.

The thing that really ticked me off was that they left the series on a cliff hanger and totally dropped the last season off the air. Good thing for youtube though. They did start airing it recently, though.

Yeah the Ninja Tribunal season was supposed to go before fast forward, which actually got pushed forward more by Playmates Toys then 4kids, I understand (wanting to sell futuristic toys they thought would sell better). Thankfully Ninja Tribunal was still mad.e

They're doing a new season called "back to the sewers" soon, I have high hopes for it.

Anyway the point I was making is, yes Japan DOES change openings too, not just Americans. The Japanese took a very american property and very much Japanesed it up (not TOO hard though as there was already that NINJA thing going on - sort of like how Trigun works very well in English because of the western setting).

It's not some evil thing to change an opening, sometimes there really is just a cultural issue.

As to which one you like better, thats all cool but the statment Japan does everything better smells a bit of foolishness to me. Japan does a -LOT- of stuff better, but not everything - keeping to topic, the GI Joe, and even the Super Liferform Transformers openings are not as good as their American counterparts openings are, so its a bit of give and take.

EDIT: On the X Men thing, we had THREE openings in the US - though the second is just a minor variant on the first, the third one though is pretty nifty: http://youtube.com/watch?v=xRnrywAX3Vc

and uh...that show rocked xD
