Has Toriyama Met The Japanese Seiyu Or English VAs?

Discussion, generally of an in-universe nature, regarding any aspect of the franchise (including movies, spin-offs, etc.) such as: techniques, character relationships, internal back-history, its universe, and more.

Has Toriyama Met The Japanese Seiyu Or English VAs?

Post by Pain » Tue Jun 17, 2008 2:11 am

Does anyone know of any instances where Toriyama has sat down and talked to any of the American voice actors or the Japanese seiyu? Does he personally know any of them? What's his relationship with them? I know that these may be a questions that don't need to be answered, but I just have to know.

I'm sure he's met the Japanese voice actors, they probably had cons and tours to go on, the Americans might not have even seen his photograph before.

I think he met some of the FUNimation voice actors at the American Shonen Jump launch party. I don't remember who exactly was there...

I know that Toriyama helped to pick out the original Japanese VAs. I remember reading somewhere that he listened to a recording of Masako Nozawa and decided she was the perfect Goku.

Even if he did meet the American voice actors before, he needs to come back and do it again so that they can figure out how to do more accurate voice-overs, and so I can get a glimpse of him in person!

I heard a rumor a long time ago that he heard a clip of Brian Drummond as Vegeta and thought he did a very good job. Whether or not this is true has still yet to be proven, but that story comes up a lot during Drummond Vs. Sabat arguments.

 Even if it is true, Toriyama said he's "very good", not "OGM GUYS! THIS GUY BEATS THE PANTS OFF THAT SABAT GUY!" Because I say Pink Floyd's The Wall is "very good" doesn't mean it's better than Dark Side of the Moon. (It isn't.)

No, but a basic "Toriyama approves" kind of scenario certainly helps Drummond supporters.

Again, I can say I love The Wall, but that doesn't mean that I wouldn't argue it's total crap next to Dark Side.

A boon to someone who loves Drummond, sure, but to someone who hates Sabat it isn't.

People are funny.

Despite whatever you think I meant by that, I never said it was a "Toriyama thinks Drummond is better" scenario. Just "Toriyama approves."

Oh, and Led Zeppelin's better than Pink Floyd.

Fair enough.

At stealing at least an album's worth of material.

According to what I've read, the controversy is over two songs. Not an album. But, if you wanna educate me further on this, send me a PM. I don't wanna derail this thread due to an off-handed comment I made just to jokingly irk somebody.

I had to put this here for everyone else to hear as well:

On topic I remember hearing along time ago about Toriyama choosing most of the cast of Dragonball, but I didn't read it from a Japanese source. So I'm not sure how true it is.

I am sure he's met the Seiyu, he chose all the voices himself.
(Although he listened to takes on tapes... so he technically didn't need to meet them...)

Actually, I thought he had said that when he had heard Toei's choice for Son Goku that it was not what he was expecting but he really liked it. I've also heard, though, that he did choose the Seiyuu for Vegeta.
