If Freeza were a female would he still be a hit as a villain?
Well, I think Freeza isn't either male or female, but... if he were decidedly female.
Re: If Freeza were a female would he still be a hit as a villain?
Considering there are few female characters who are fighters, and just about all of them are regulated to becoming a standard wife if they become an ally, it would be fresh and exciting, even if a non humanoid, that Freeza was in fact female.
Re: If Freeza were a female would he still be a hit as a villain?
A lot of loud men would complain about a random female alien being stronger than Gokuu.
It'd be nice to have a cool, queer and evil female character. Considering the context of Dragon Ball not really having any female protagonists, though, I'm not sure it would be wise to have Freeza as a woman.

Probably. Goku in his childlike naivete didn't show any hesitation in knocking blonde Launch out when she became hostile. The issue has to do moreso with the fact that there were scarcely any female fighters in the original manga, let alone female villains of capable worth in the strength department. #18 is the only one besides blonde Launch to an extent who fits those conditions and she still was overall secondary in terms of power availability next to her brother.

You do realize that for a long time most American fans thought Freeza was either a woman or gay and people still liked him, can we lock this thread now before it gets stupid.
It's not too late. One day, it will be.

This is so true, even in my country people would refer to Freeza as a she. Especially considering the old voice.goku the krump dancer wrote: ↑Tue May 03, 2022 10:57 pm You do realize that for a long time most American fans thought Freeza was either a woman or gay and people still liked him, can we lock this thread now before it gets stupid.

She would've been even more of a hit. People would've gotten crushes on Freeza, there would've been sexy fan art about her, maybe some fanmanga about Bulma trying to avenge Vegeta or something like that.
Freeza's personality isn't exclusive to male characters. Lady Freeza would've been as great as Freeza, but with a bigger fanbase.

It's not clear to me that Freeza's race has sex or gender in the way we think of them. Freeza does refer to King Cold as his "father" but we shouldn't infer from that that he also has a "mother".
It's just as likely that, as with Namekians, the ideas of "male" or "female" just don't exist with "his" race.

We've seen four menmbers of Freeza's species and all of them seem coded male. All namekians seem male. All asari female. It doesn't matter if we create a fictional race of mono-gendered beings if they take on physical characteristics of a single gender.capsulecorp wrote: ↑Wed May 04, 2022 6:27 pm It's not clear to me that Freeza's race has sex or gender in the way we think of them. No he would not.
Re: If Freeza were a female would he still be a hit as a villain?
Considering Frieza is quite androgynous in appereance, in the story you could even have him look the same but be called a girl and it wouldn't make any difference.

P much this. Plus furthering the Dongfang Bubai wuxia allusion I've seen some say Freeza was partially inspired by/based onKoitsukai wrote: ↑Wed May 04, 2022 12:50 pm She would've been even more of a hit. Many fans thought Frieza was an old woman (Hx of chain smoking) when he was introduced in the ocean dub. He was still considered a great villain.
