From A to DBZ: A History of Dragon Ball Z Games

Post by dragondyle » Fri Jun 20, 2008 7:53 pm

Gamedaily.com has a little gallery of the history of Dragon Ball Z games (in America that is, with an odd throw-in of Jump Superstars). It even starts with Dragon Power (yes, Dragon Power).

Jump Superstars was in America for a short time. In full Japanese. I saw it at Best Buy and I e-mailed VegettoEX about it. A long time ago. Like a few years.

I love you Best Buy, but I hate you for not keeping it longer.

I bought Jump Super Stars from Best Buy. Wish they had imported Ultimate Stars, too...

 wot? You mean Atari went back to. . . not making games, right?

There were a lot of errors in it, but it was better than Donny Clay's thing he did a few weeks back.

It was that Yardratean original character Sagas has Goku spar with before going back to Earth, Soba.

Sagas was deliciously retarded. Oddly enough it has a few similar things with Burst Limit:

-Play as Broly, but no other movie characters (Bardock was a TV special :D)
-Up to Cell Saga
-On a Sony console and a Microsoft console.
-Short story mode

Burst Limit's WAYYYYYYYYYYY better though.

Are there any other original characters in Sagas?

Hm, that's actually sort of interesting. I've always wanted an expanded Yadrat story (most exciting part of DBO for me!), shame I didn't get past Butta and Jees before I turned the game off and never played it again (I only rented it).

Man, it sucked.

Soba's the only original "main" character. Oddly enough, his power level is 15,000,000, which going by the misinterpreted PL guide Sagas used, is equal to SSJ Goku. There are also original beings that can be fought "beat 'em up" style, like the hulked-out mutant Saibamen, pre-Android robots of Gero's, and the shark-like beings on Yardrat.

Hah, it's a good thing Freeza didn't try to take over Yardrat.

I enjoyed Sagas. The hate the game gets is kinda unneeded.
The series doesn't start with the arrival of Raditz. Stop being lazy and watch Dragonball.

I think more appropriate would be "The series wouldn't even be shown in North America in any sort of fashion for another three years after this game's release, and then not with any sort of real distribution for another six years after that."

But hey, you can't win 'em all :P.

Or if we're trying to keep it succinct, "the franchise wasn't a widespread hit in the States yet."
