I still don't understand why Goku is dressed like he shops at a department store.

Is it that they don't want people to know he's a martial artist?

BULLSHIT

Sorrrry

I can swallow my distaste for the "I shop at Hot Topic and no one understands me" angle. But to feature it on the poster? Where the frell is his gi? You're advertising Dragon Ball, but you're scared to show Son-fracking-Goku as a martial artist? Jesus, the cover for the R. Talsorian RPG was more compelling than that shot of him.

Everyone else does look pretty good though, I have to admit. Goku's just a pretty big one to screw up though, y'know?
To show my appreciation, I'll only beat them half to death.

Eh, do we even know when he gets the gi? I mean, for all we know he gets it in the last 20 minutes of the movie. If that's the case, advertising him in the gi would be like advertising the the first several episodes of DB (start until the 21st Budokai) with Goku in a gi.

Not so much. The gi is his iconic look. In fact, aside from the Goku 'fro, it's probably the most iconic thing from Dragon Ball to the general American audience. So advertising Goku without his gi is, even if he isn't in the gi for most of the movie, like advertising Superman without the S.

Smallvile's managed to stay pretty far away from the blue tights so far. :P

Eh. I'm figuring they're not putting the gi up so as to save those posters til we're closer to release. Last minute hype, as it were.

Either way, I couldn't care less if the movie even had the turtle gi. DB movie 4 never has it and it's my favorite of all DB/Z movies~

They're probably advertising Goku without the gi for the same reason they're not showing Piccolo yet; It's supposed to be a secret until they decide to show it. Like Xyex said, it'll be closer to the release.

Goku in a gi = secret?

Smallville does the color scheme and has done other JLA'ers more or less in costume (most notably Green Arrow of course). But that's a WB...er...CW teen drama re-imagining of the Super Boy mythos, basically (well, given the lengevity of the show, I guess Man would fit now).

This would be more like having a Superman Returns poster showing Lois, Jimmy, Cyclops (I forget his name in the movie) looking intense, with a shot that suggests Lex Luthor (wouldn't want to spoil the surprise) and a front and center shot of Clark Kent dropping a stack of papers.

Movie 4 was Path to Power right? He was wearing a gi then too. His old school blue gi. I just want SOMETHING that suggests this is Son Goku, not just Justin Chatwin with a funny hair cut and some kanji on a shirt he got from Spencers.
To show my appreciation, I'll only beat them half to death.

Apparently his dogi is a Kame dogi that's colored pretty accurately, but the style of dogi is similar to his blue dogi you see in Path to Power, the end of DBZ, and in GT. So, I guess FOX thinks its different enough to keep it a secret. Not as deep of a secret as Piccolo Daimao, but secret enough that the only officially released picture of it is a concept art drawing in Weekly Jump.

Speaking of that art, at least in the concept art Son Goku's hairstyle had bangs. The lack of bangs is the only thing I'm not really liking about what we've seen of Chatwin as Son Goku.

Also, a co-worker of mine told me about an hour ago at lunch that there's some 20 second teaser for this movie floating around that shows a CGI Shenron floating around. I'm guessing that its a fan trailer made up of the remastered Shenron from the Chinese Dragonball movie, but it doesn't hurt to ask. Has anyone else come across this at all?

I thought Japan's Shonen Jump (which published that manga-ified set report) said that in their next issue (August, I'm guessing), they're going to reveal Goku's gi? Maybe just the design . . . or maybe an actual pic of Chatwin in the gi? They also said they're publishing their interview with him, so. *shrug*

There are a bunch of fake trailers on YouTube that feature the dragon from Dragon Wars flying around . . . maybe that's it, 'cause I don't think we're getting a trailer any time soon. Heck, Harry Potter 6 is coming out in November '08 and it still doesn't have a trailer. =/

I'm speaking mainly from an American perspective. The Japanese tend to be getting a lot more info and stuff than we are. I guess its because Dragonball came from Japan.

I hope that they're also giving some input, God knows the movie needs it.

Is it getting a simultaneous release in Japan?
And moreover, would they dub it in Japanese or just subtitle it?
How weird would it be if they dubbed it over with the anime cast?
To show my appreciation, I'll only beat them half to death.

Most (american) movies are dubbed in Japanese. I once saw Lord of the Rings and Pirates of the Caribbean in Japanese and the dubs were pretty good.

I don't think that they will use the Anime voice actors for the movie dub. Altough they did it with the Fist of the Northstar live action movie (with Gary Daniels).

Y'know, I think I'd actually really enjoy the movie if I could see a version with the dialogue done by the anime cast. Chatwin may look like a mook, but if Ms Nozawa can't save Goku, who can?!

I'd definitly buy the DVD from Japan if it has a dub with the anime cast.

They ditched the spandex and tights but give him a blue t-shirt, denim jeans, and a red jacket instead of the cape. Occasionally a red t-shirt and blue jacket to mix things up. Its mainly because they cant call him Superboy because the creators' lawsuit against DC Comics and WB.

Smallville is essentially the Silver age (1950s-60s) Superboy comic, where he was friends with Lex, dated Lana, etc. Clark was actually responsible for Lex losing his hair in the Silver age.

So far, Smallville is doing a better job modernizing Superboy than they're doing trying to modernize Dragonball

If they did dub the movie in Japanese with the original cast it would sound better and be more enjoyable, but Nozawa's Goku voice would not fit Chatwin's appearance at all. It would still be an improvement from what it is probably going to turn out like, but judging by all of Chatwin's promotional images and his blank stares, the only voice I see fitting his character is a silent one.

And that's the problem.
