Orange Piccolo has been nerfed?

As we recently learned, the previous version of the Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero script did not include Gohan's main role, meaning there was therefore a possibility that originally Orange Piccolo was strong enough to kill Cell Max. However, with the addition of Gohan to the storyline at the urging of Akio Iyoku, one can assume that the form was weakened enough to fail Cell so that Gohan could deal the final blow in his beast form.

One can also speculate in the other direction that it was Cell Max who was originally weaker than in the final product, but due to the fact that even without that the entire team managed to weaken him and destroy his arm, I'm willing to believe that the originally slightly stronger Orange Piccolo would have been able to knock Cell Max out with a makankosappo.

It's also possible Orange Piccolo wasn't even thought up until after Gohan was suggested.

Does it ultimately matter, since all that's relevant is what's actually on-screen in the final production?

We don't consider Goku an actual monkey (as he was in initial prototypes) and we don't consider second-form Cell the final villain of that arc (as was Toriyama's initial plan).

Perhaps not, but I am still curious about various behind-the-scenes information, and as a matter of curiosity I like to speculate and know more.

We will never know unless they disclose it. Perhaps the idea of Cell Max even comes after they decide to make Gohan a more important role.

But we know for a fact a script for the movie wasn’t in production into after adding Gohan as a co-star was suggested

All we know is that Toriyama wanted to make a movie staring Piccolo so the whole orange piccolo concept may not have been apart of his original plans
