The Essential Starter Collection?

Post by Kendamu » Tue Jun 24, 2008 1:31 am

It doesn't matter if you're a fan of the anime, the manga, the Japanese version, or the American version. I would like to see what you think is the "essential collection" of Dragonball stuff for a Dragonball fan to have. I'll start us off:

- Dragonbox Singles -

1) Dragonball #23: 23rd Tenka'ichi Budokai
2) Dragonball #24: 23rd Tenka'ichi Budokai
3) Dragonball #25: 23rd Tenka'ichi Budokai
4) Dragonball Z #4: Vegeta & Nappa
5) Dragonball Z #5: Vegeta & Nappa
6) Dragonball Z #6: Vegeta & Nappa

Reason: Good sampling of entire fights with the least amount of "triangle crap" and filler. Plus, the 23rd Tenka'ichi Budokai is my favorite story arc. Also, I have no problems with the American release of the 23rd Tenka'ichi Budokai so a person using this list could get that instead.

- Video Games -

1) Dragonball Z: Idainaru Dragonball Densetsu for PSOne (DBZ: Legends)
2) Dragonball Z 3 for PS2 (Dragonball Z: Budokai 3)
3) Dragonball Z: Sparking! Meteor for PS2 (Dragonball Z: Budokai Tenka'ichi 3)
4) Super Dragonball Z for PS2

Reason: Good sampling of modern console DBZ games with a slight aftertaste taste of favoritism. I didn't include portable games because I've never played the Shin Budokai games and Dragonball DS isn't out yet so I can't recommend it.

- Manga -

1) All of it!
2) English or Japanese, it doesn't matter!
3) Just get the manga!
4) It might help if you can actually read the version you get, though...

Reason: I'm a manga fanboy.

- Movies -

1) Dragonball Z – Return My Gohan!! (Dead Zone)
2) Dragonball Z - The World's Strongest Guy (The World's Strongest)
3) Dragonball Z - Super Decisive Battle for Earth (Tree of Might)
4) Dragonball - The Path to Ultimate Strength (Path to Power)

Reason: They're my favorite movies. Out of all animated Dragonball stories, these are my favorite. Also, they have good releases in Japan and in the US so I didn't specify FUNi or Pony Canyon.

- Misc/Toys -

1) Dragonball Super Item: Dragon Radar
2) Dragonball Super Item: Scouter
3) Dragonball Super Item: Hoipoi Capsule Clock & Case
4) Dragonball Z Crystal Balls (Dragonballs & Display Box)

Reason: I like obscure display/cosplay items and don't like action figures.

I expect your lists to have some personal bias to them and I expect to see some categories I didn't explore. So, while my list is kind of a template, feel free to do you own thing and put stuff on your lists just because you like it instead of appealing to universal interest.

I don't have much DragonBall stuff to make much of a list with, but I did want to mention a couple of things. I like DragonBall more than DragonBall Z, and this kinda reflects that.

Video Games
In addition to Budokai 3, Tenkaichi 3, and Super DragonBall Z, which you mentioned, I'd also say DragonBall: Advance Adventure. It's one of the few DragonBall (not Z) games in existence, and a damn good one at that.

It's got fun gameplay, a lot of modes, a lot of locations, and a ton of playable characters, many that you can't play as anywhere else.

Toys
I don't have many, but I've always been fond of the old DragonBall figures from IF Labs. Again, it's of the less-common DragonBall (not Z).

I think the sculpts are awesome, the paint jobs aren't cheap or sloppy, the detail and texture (like fur on some characters) is great, the bases are cool, and they have some uncommon characters like Mai, Pilaf, Shu, and Lunch.

Yeah. I thought about putting Advance Adventure on there, but I'd rather wait until Dragonball DS comes out before saying anything related to those games.

The manga is all that you need to get an accurate understanding of the series, which is basically all you need. But to truely enjoy the series I believe that you need:

-Complete manga
--In your native tounge first and then if you can afford it also in Japanese (the Kanzenban is the best).

-Anime collection
--Owning all of the episodes is not a complete necessity, but it is nice. The only parts of the anime that are truely important to own if you want to enjoy the series is the The Saga of Goku, King Piccolo Saga, Piccolo Jr. Saga, Saiya-jin Saga, Freeza Saga, Imperfect Cell Saga, Perfect Cell Saga and the Cell Games Saga. Also, DB movie 4 and DBZ movies 1,3,5,6,8,9,12,13 are the best, so watching those too is great.

In my opinion this is all you need to stisfy yourself and understand the series to a decent extent.

I agree that the English version of the 23rd Tenkaichi Budokai (as well as all Dragonball to me) is pretty good, but they're almost impossible to find a a decent price. Most people are selling them for $40 or more.

I'd recommend this to Americans since it's the closet we'll get to having the Quest for the Dragonballs part of the series in Japanese (until that other companies contract expires of course... whenever that is)

Does any body have any music recommendations? I've been wanting to buy some Dragon Ball CDs so I'd like to know which one everyone thinks is good.
Trying is the first step towards failure.

...unless your native tounge is Norwegian, in which case you should import the Danish version instead. If you claim you can't read it, you're lying.

If you're native language is Norwegian, you should also not buy any DVD release from your own country. If you don't speak any non-Scandinavian languages... learn some. Just stay the hell away from those abominations.

I know people are going to suggest some collections like Legend of Dragonworld (and by all means, get that one too), but I'm going to be a bit more original and say get the first DBZ Hit Collection. It's goooood.

Personally, I would recommend the Dragon Ball Z BGM Collection CD Box. However, personally I'm after Power Live 98 (as heard in a recent DaizEX podcast) and the Super Survivor CD (the one with the Burst Limit opening theme on it).

You guys get the Japanese manga? Did you learn some Japanese or something? Or is it just for the uncut panels that you get them? OR is it because you just want to own Dragonball in its most original form, regardless of if you can understand it or not?...

I've been studying Japanese for a couple years now so I can read some stuff. There's just not enough edited out of the panels in the VIZ version for me to justify someone buying the Japanese version first if they don't understand Japanese.

Well, if I were to get the Kanzenban, it would be primarily for the fact that they have all the color pages. Knowing Japanese would just be a bonus.

I don't know Japanese, yet, so for me collecting as much of the Japanese material as possible is just so I can "own Dragonball in its most original form".

Anime
DB: The Saga of Goku (ep. 1-13)
Because they're the essence of Dragon Ball, and very well done episodes.
DB: The Commander Red Saga (ep. 58-67)
Tao vs. Goku remains one of the best struggles in the series.
DB: The Tenshinhan Saga (ep. 84-101)
The most exciting Budokai, with loads of great new plot and characters, and the beginning of Dragon Ball's darkest saga.
DB: Piccolo Daimao Saga (ep. 102-122)
Undeniable the best amalgamation of episodes supporting every reason I love Dragon Ball.
DBZ: Saiyajin, Namek, and Freeza (ep. 1-92)
An epic story about Goku's origins, which culminates to the greatest climactic (if a tad drawn out) battle in DB's history.

Movies
DB movie 3: Mystical Adventure
"He should've watched his tongue. And mine."
DB movie 4: The Path To Power
It's Dragon Ball goodness, and you can show it to your girlfriend.
DBZ movie 2: World's Strongest
Excellent movie, with an interesting story, cool villains, and awesome fights.
DBZ movie 3: Tree of Might
The same as above.
DBZ movie 9: Bojack Unbound
Like 2 and 3, only about Gohan.
DBGT: A Hero's Legacy
A cute, Dragon Ball-esque adventure with Goku's decedent, and the most immensely satisfying moment in the metaseries since Goku blew up Freeza.

Manga
Volumes 1 - 28
The good stuff.

Video Games
Dragon Ball Advance Adventure
Honestly, the most fun DB/Z/GT game ever.
Dragon Ball Z: Budokai 3
A new classic.
