Me too. I thought it was a little goofy for my Ghost Rider tastes, but I let that go. I was expecting that, really, since it was based on Johnny Blaze/Zarathos, and mainly the stuff from the 70's (as opposed to Danny Ketch/Noble Kale, The Midnight Sons, and basically all the stuff I pray they will eventually make into a movie).Rocketman wrote:I heard they were looking into making a sequel, actually. I look forward to it, as I'm one of those weirdos who liked Ghost Rider.Raz wrote:Every new comic adventure that has been moved into film I can think of with the exception of Ghost Risder as of late is transitioning into lengthy trilogies.

To show my appreciation, I'll only beat them half to death.
DragonBall has been around for 10 years in the States (and any "damage" that could be done here already has), and even longer elsewhere in the world, especially Japan. It and its reputation are in no danger.JulieYBM wrote:My problem with the film is that this is going to be the public face of the franchise and if and when it bombs it damages th' name o' th' franchise in the eyes of the public.

I think he just means their personal opinions on the movie. There was a video linked here awhile ago where Sean Schemmel said some stuff about it.Raz wrote:I wouldn't find anything FUNi says reliable. They remind me of the Mortal Kombat crew always talking about how fantastic they are as if there is never any negative references to their franchise.
Anything they say can be understood to be verbal masturbation *nods*

Agreed. I was one that had expressed concerns about Chatwin as Son Goku, but even citied that as long as he can pull it off I'll be fine by it. 2-5 pages (Lord, I don't know), all I hear is massive nerd rage about how someone's whining about a poster and whatnot. I've got nothing against those that support the film, but things have been unusually aggressive. These conversations are getting pretty sad, even more so than the movie's choices of adapting Dragon Ball based on what we've read so far. I definitely hoping that there will be changes.Kendamu wrote:When there's not much t' go on, what else're we gonna talk about? Its not like th' movie's come out yet.

Sean Schemmel talked a bit about it at this year's New York Comic Con. HERE's the vid. Basically, he said all you can say at this point: Could be good, could be bad, hopefully the former.JulieYBM wrote:By th' way, is there anything the FUNimation cast has said about this film yet?
I don't know if it will turn out too well if they come here with the live action movie as the only thing they've seen, if it does bomb, they're always welcome here though.Raki wrote:I think the new live action movie{if it bombs}, will give people yet another reason to slam the franchise. I also think we might have some new fans of the movie join this already divided fanbase.
I attempt not to over play Dragonball in the US. Those not really 'in the know' may form a less then stellar opinion of the franchise as a whole based on this film.SSj Kaboom wrote:DragonBall has been around for 10 years in the States (and any "damage" that could be done here already has), and even longer elsewhere in the world, especially Japan. If you are doing the first movie ever about Superman. You would have to begin on Krypton with baby being put on a rocket. If you put him in the moutains doing martial arts training. Then he is no longer Superman. You have already altered the character.Wow, really? Having "When the movie starts Superman is in the woods alone doing martial arts training" would completely alter his character? Even though nothing else at all is said about him? Including no mentions as to WHY he's in the woods alone doing martial arts training? Huh. And here I thought characters had more depth than where we find them at the start of a movie.
LOL so ridiculous. Goku is a naive hick from the moutains. Its a vital part of his character that all future development builds off of. As for the rest of what you wrote. I do not want to be mean. But it is now obvious why you can't understand this.I know more than you do, obviously. If hundreds of fanfic writers can convincingly set Goku somewhere other than the mountains and still leave him exactly the same person despite the background change I think a couple of professionals can do it as well.
The location is where the character develops his personality. A person who grew up in the Bronx. Is going to have a much different personality and world perspective than a person raised in the moutains alone.Putting him into a highschool enviroment is adapting the location. The location IS NOT THE FUCKING CHARACTER.
An adult Goku who is attending high school is a great ly different character than the Goku who fought Junior at the World Tournament. Now maybe the movie starts off with a montage of Goku going from the moutains to being trained by Roshi to somehow ending up in school. In that case this is pointless.Does that mean he can't have the same fucking personality? No, it doesn't. Just because they're changing a backdrop and altering some of his upbrining doesn't mean that he wont still be recognizable as Goku.
You'd have grounds for your arguement if we'd actually SEEN something so far that supported it. But we've not seen any trailers yet to show us that he acts differently. Once we see him acting in someway that totally goes against Goku then ok, I'll agree with you, they screwed him up. But until then there's just not enough information to make a call EITHER WAY.
In fact in my first post I made complaints about things we know. The fact he looks nothing like Goku even if you squint. The fact the poster has nothing that would make you think it was Dragonball. Except for the title and the tiny Dragonball. Even the shittiest of these types of movies (FF, Ang Lee Hulk and Ghost Rider) are automatically recogniseable. If this movie is already fucking up stuff those turds got right. Does not exactly fill me with hope.
I've said it before, and unfortunately I still feel this way; it's as if this film is going to be the decade's Street Figher, or as others have mentioned: Mario Bros, and Double Dragon. Regardless, I still have a slight slight teensy sliver of hope that I'll enjoy the film without cringing 90 percent of the time, thanks to Kaboom's often optimistic input and views about the film that is.
For all the flack that FUNimation gets on this forum for their quote about DBZ, there's some modicum of truth to it: a 9-year-old is born every day. Or in some cases, "reborn". DBZ may be a kids' show, but it's been so close to so many hearts all over Japan, America, and quite possibly, even the world.
Transformers is American. Has been since day one. Yes, it's based on Japanese toys, but it is an American cartoon. Just because Japan continued the series after the US ended it and just because it's animated in asia doesn't make it anime. I mean, if that's all it took most shows would be considred anime here (most American cartoons are animated in asia) and Big O's second season would be considered a Cartoon since it was the US that continued the series.Actually off-topic/on-topic, Transformers is an anime. It isn't the style we are most accustomed to in anime but is anime. There are four more seasons of sorts of Transformers originating in Japan. All of the animation is done in Japan with the exception of season 3 having been done in Korea.
Because obviously nothing happens before the start of a movie and we can't be told that such-and-such caused him to be in the mountains at the start of the movie despite *gasp!* the rest of his life being exactly the same as the comics. If you are doing the first movie ever about Superman. You would have to begin on Krypton with baby being put on a rocket. If you put him in the moutains doing martial arts training. Then he is no longer Superman. You have already altered the character.
Obviously Goku's life wont be exactly the same but *exactly* isn't the point here. The point is that a change of a LOCATION does not mean a total change of character. Can you say with 100% certainty that Goku didn't spend the first 17 years of his life in the mountains with just his grandfather? No, you can't. Until we have something that actually shows he's got a completely different and un-Goku-like personality all you can do is make baseless asumptions off the fact that he happens to be in highschool in the movie.
No, the problem is I understand fine but you can't grasp characters beyond one dimension. Just because Goku got to 20 via 2 + 5 + 4 + 8 + 1 in the manga doesn't mean the movie version can't do 5 + 5 + 4 + 6 to get to the same result. This is really basic psychology, a person is more than the sum of their experiences.LOL so ridiculous. Goku is a naive hick from the moutains. Its a vital part of his character that all future development builds off of. As for the rest of what you wrote. I do not want to be mean. But it is now obvious why you can't understand this.
I repeat, it has NEVER been said that Goku grew up in the city. It as ONLY been said that he's in Highschool at the time of the movie. Also, by your standards, everyone who grows up in the inner city has no option but to become a gang member which is no the case. Hell, even identicle twins growing up in the exact some environment can come out differently as has happened in the real world. The location is where the character develops his personality. A person who grew up in the Bronx. Is going to have a much different personality and world perspective than a person raised in the moutains alone.

Do we all remember this chapter of the manga? It's Goku's first time in a big city. He's wandering around, completely unfamiliar with the way things work, who to talk to or trust, or how to get to where he's supposed to get going.Xyex wrote:I repeat, it has NEVER been said that Goku grew up in the city.
