Ocean dub lines that were faithful to the original Japanese script, but the 2005 redub wasn't

I know of this example from episode 36 (originally 36-38), after Bulma accidentally presses the self-destruct switch:

Krillin (Original Japanese): "Bulma-san, you're the one who was hasty to push those switches."

Krillin (Ocean dub): "But Bulma, uh, you were the one who pushed the button."

Krillin (2005 redub): "Maybe we should ask Mr. Popo and see what he thinks."

Any other examples?

Sure, the censorship (i.e. Next Dimension) was eyerolling, but the voice cast was superb when I view it now, and, dare I say, better than the current cast? (my opinion, if you disagree, that's fine, but don't flame me for it.)

Give me Ian James Corlett as Goku and Don Brown as King Kai any day over Sean Schemmel. (Peter Kelamis was all right, but Ian was the GOAT for the western version)

Give me Saffron Henderson as Gohan any day over Stephanie Nadolny and Colleen Clinkenbeard.

Give me Lalainia Lindbjerg as Bulma any day over Tiffany Volmer and Monica Rial.

Give me Terry Klassen as Krillin any day over Sonny Strait.

Give me Scott McNeil and Brian Drummond as Piccolo and Vegeta respectively any day over Chris Sabat.

Give me Doc Harris as the Narrator any day over Brice Armstrong and Kyle Hebert.

I just happened to, for some reason, decided to compare the scene where Bulma freaks out over first seeing Mr. Popo, and was surprised to find that the Ocean dub was the closest to the original of the three versions I compared. Hence, why I made this thread.

I wont blame you OR Flame you. I love Ocean and I love that they did awesome under the miserable circumstances the dub was made. People go on and on about how childish the censorship was or the corny humor but it was Ocean that allowed Dragon Ball to thrive and become the juggernaut it is today.

Dragon Ball owes nothing to Ocean aside from providing the voice cast for the English dub.

Regardless of how you feel about that voice cast, Dragon Ball was a success in spite of Ocean, not because of it (and I say that as someone who prefers that cast to the Funimation cast).

Seriously though guys. Ocean didn't write the scripts. Funimation was responsible for the scripts from day uno. Even though some of the Ocean voice actors contributed to the scripts (which continued well after Funimation moved casting and recording to Texas) they were still written to conform to the direction Funimation (read Barry Watson) wanted the dub to be


And yeah no single party was really responsible for Dragon Ball's success in the States. Funimation proved a less talented voice cast than Oceans could see the show become a success, Funimation's multiple horrendously questionable decisions in how to handle the show didn't kill it. Even Toonami, which always gets hailed as Dragon Ball's savior just happened to be the network that got the show after a couple years in syndication, it would have been just as big of a hit if it had ended up on Fox Kids or KidsWb (which is what we basically saw with Kai)

Harmony Gold would have seen success with Dragon Ball if they hadn't shitcanned it after 5 episodes, presumably because they realized it would be impossible to edit the show to the late 80s/early 90s US Kidvid standards and have it make any coherent sense.

I wouldn't go that far. Ocean did some good things for the series once they parted ways with Funimation. Blue Water (which is basically the same company) GT and to a lesser extent Dragon Ball's scripts are more accurate. Karl Willems, while not a direct employee of Ocean is closely associated with the company as he directed many of their anime dubs, in addition to the Pioneer movies. Sadly we have yet to see Kai, but Ocean's decision to aggressively recast everyone was a very admirable direction that I think likely would have worked in the cast's favour as everyone got their roles fairly.

In general though, I'd agree Dragon Ball has historically been very successful under normal circumstances because every time it's the story and characters that sell, not who is handling the adaptation or airings.

I love Ocean, but Funimation could have outsourced their voice work to any other prominent dubbing studio in North America like DiC or Studiopolis and the show would have still been a hit.

With regard to the question of the thread, I can't recall specific examples of dialogue but I do remember Funimation's redub of Tree of Might is more inaccurate than the Pioneer version featuring the Ocean cast, because they reused the script from the Saban-style TV version of the movie.
