Howdy!
Something that came to my attention is that the last 3 movies have been DBZ villians. Cell Max while not Cell himself...is a remastered version of him for lack of better term. Broly is a remake of Broly(movie 7). Freeza...well everybody knows Freeza. Now prior to modern Dragon Ball, the movies were essentially retellings of certain arcs so recycling concepts isn't a new thing for DB movies. However for me while I did enjoy the last 3 movies...does it come off as nostalgia bait? I know these movies gotta make money but I feel like BoG introduced a breathe of fresh air to the series with new characters. Broly while a "new character" has the same blueprint as the original Broly. Superhero introduced Orange and Beast which is awesome but reusing Cell? Not so much. Not to mention the RRA being used yet again...they the only villians that been a factor in all 4 anime series. I just feel like going foward hopefully we get a BoG type of movie where things feels fresh again.
To wrap this post up, what are your opinions with the last 3 movies being Z era villians?

I think Super has a whole has done a great job of balancing callbacks with original characters and villains. Let's not forget Super at this point has essentially nine arcs, and Beerus, Hit, Zamasu, Jiren, Moro and Gas are all original antagonists. But I agree that relying on older villains for the movie reveals a lack of confidence in the brand and its new stories.
I think all the other anime/manga arcs would have done just as well as the other four movies in movie format, but alas we don't live in the timeline where that happened.
