What would be your ideal release?

Discussion regarding the entirety of the franchise in a general (meta) sense, including such aspects as: production, trends, merchandise, fan culture, and more.

What would be your ideal release?

Post by Tian » Mon May 27, 2024 11:45 pm

After reading all of the collective disappointment (justified) over the latest releases from FUNimation (now known as Crunchyroll), I am interested to know what would your ideal release be like.

Here's a list of items that can help you:
  • Name of Release: Insert a cool name for the release here.
  • Picture: It could be a description, a screenshot, a promotional image, etc.
  • Content: Number of episodes, specials, movies and/or discs.
  • Extras: Some quiz, interviews, stuff like that.
  • Languages: Dubs and subs, of course.
  • Format: The media where it is released, like DVD or Blu-Ray
  • Ratio: The screen ratio of your preference.
  • Sound: The audio of your preference, mono or stereo. Original broadcast audio could also be a option.
  • Region: Just in case you wanna make it more realistic.
  • Publisher: The same as above.
Here's my example:

A little too late but yeah, I've been officially active in Kanzenshuu for ten years :)

It should definitely be uncensored and include all Latin American dubs (OG DB, DBZ. DB GT, AND SUPER) but no Kai.

Ah yes, I love home releases, best way to own your favourite content bar none. Of course we can allow our imaginations to go wild because there's so much we can wish for that never happened.

Off the top of my head, here's a few I'd like:
  • Name of Release: Dragon Ball Z : The YTV Collection

Picture: Goku and friends in the foreground ready for battle, Freeza, Cell and Boo looming overhead at top of cover. Red background

Content: 6 discs. Episodes 1-53 and movies 1-3 (Disc 1), Episodes 54-102, movie 4, Bardock: The Father of Goku special (Disc 2), Episodes 103-167 (Disc 3), Episodes 168-217 and History of Trunks special (Disc 4), Episodes 218-276. All presented as aired on YTV. Saban dub for episodes 1-53, 54-167 is Funimation's dub with Ocean's edits, of course Funi episodes 108-167 is an additional audio track for what is the main selling point of this release - the Westwood dub, which goes from 108-276. Movies 1-3 are Ocean's edit of the Pioneer movie dubs. Movies 4 and the 2 TV specials are of course Funimation's dub as no Canadian cast equivalent exists. Its unknown if Ocean edited these, but if edits exist that would be included, if not just whatever aired on YTV, which would otherwise be Funimation's TV edits

Extras: All YTV, UK and Dutch Cartoon Network and CNX promos. Maybe Yorin, Kanaal 2 and SubTV for other European territories if they existed. Also interviews with Ocean cast, Karl Willems, Diana Gage and Ken Morrison. Hell for the sake of history let's throw in the final episode of Z in German with SubTV's on-screen text apologising for the lack of subs for Finnish fans who remember that fateful day the series concluded on December 16, 2006

Languages: English with Simmons subs retimed to match the cuts. Would include Japanese but these are edited dubs so it would need to be a separate release

Format: SD Blu-Ray of course for the insane amount of content, like Shaman King's 60+ episode a disc releases

    Ratio: 4:3

Sound: The best thats available on Ocean's digibetas, which I assume is stereo because Funimation only started doing 5.1s for the Ultimate Uncut DVDs

    Region: Region A

    Publisher: Discotek
  • Name of Release: Dragon Ball GT : The YTV Collection

Picture: Kid Goku, Pan, Trunks and Gill in the foreground ready for adventure, Baby Vegeta, Super 7 and Yi Xing Long looming overhead at top of cover. Blue background

Content: 2 discs. Episodes 1-32 (Disc 1), Episodes 33-64, final episode contains the full montage aired on YTV (Disc 2)

Extras: All YTV and CNX promos. Ditto Yorin if there were any. UK/Dutch version of episode 64 without ending montage included for those of us who grew up with the cut version. Also interviews with Blue Water cast, writerz, directors, Diana Gage and Ken Morrison

Languages: English dub by Blue Water and retimed Simmons subs

    Format: SD Blu-Ray

    Ratio: 4:3

    Sound: Same as above

    Region: Region A

    Publisher: Discotek
  • Name of Release: Dragon Ball : The YTV Collection

Picture: Kid Goku travelling on Kinto Un, Bulma and Yamcha on respective vehicles left and right and Lame House with rest of Goku's friends in bottom centre. Lord Piccolo on top of his ship hovering in the sky

    Content: 3 discs. Episodes 1-51 (Disc 1), Episodes 52-102 (Disc 2), Episodes 103-153 (Disc 3)

Extras: All YTV and Toonami promos. Also interviews with Blue Water cast, writers, directors, Diana Gage and Ken Morrison

Languages: English dub by Blue Water and retimed Mandelin/Simmons subs

    Format: SD Blu-Ray

    Ratio: 4:3

    Sound: Same as above

    Region: Region A

    Publisher: Discotek
All in that release order, just as they aired on TV.

The above three would be available as individual releases, all in standard amaray cases, but a box set option would become available later containing all of them.

For the Japanese version, something along these lines for the uncut episodes, movies and specials with Seed of Might's remaster and broadcast audio. Additional audio tracks for Funimation's remastered dub and a new uncut Ocean dub funded by a Kickstarter. Subs from the existing uncut releases are of course fine.
  • Name of Release: Dragon Ball Kai : The Lost Dubs edition

Picture: Goku fighting Freeza in foreground, Freeza and henchmen in background with large image of Cell looming over in the sky

    Content: Episodes 1-50 (Disc 1), Episodes 51-98 (Disc 2)

Extras: Interviews with Ocean cast, Karl Willems, Diana Gage and Ken Morrison

Languages: English dub with Ocean Studios edit. Two audio tracks - Funimation, as seen on Nicktoons with Yamamoto from episodes 1-63, Kikuchi from 64-98 and of course the ultimate selling point, maybe of any English language anime release ever the unreleased Canadian Kai dub. Also audio tracks for the Latin American (both Spanish and Portuguese) dubs as these use Ocean's edit seen on Nicktoons and should in theory sync perfectly

    Format: SD Blu-Ray

    Ratio: 4:3

    Sound: 5.1

    Region: Region A

    Publisher: Discotek
In a world where Manga UK still exists they'd go their traditional repackaging route and reproduce all the above releases with the only difference being the rebranded packaging, changing the region code from A to B for us here in Europe and slapping on the BBFC ratings.

THAT!! THAT!!

It must include Latin American Dub and that way they can guarantee the sales would be good in the whole american cotinent.

I would appreciate an uncensored version. I would not mind having to show my ID at the time of the purchase or even paying extra for the uncensored version of it. I would prefer the least discs as possible, I live in a tiny place, space is limited. Blu Ray Format.

Hire me for the Art on the cover, I have plenty of ideas and I have experience. I can make Toriyama Style.

Extras: Toriyama's interviews, THAT is a MUST!!!!!!!!!!

Really, just a color corrected HD Dragon Box with all the uncut English dubs and an English redub of the Ginyu-Cell Games portion of Z. All of the Japanese AND English TV/Promo material.
Yamcha: Do you remember the spell to release him - do you know all the words?
Bulma: Of course! I'm not gonna pull a Frieza and screw it up!
Master Roshi: Bulma, I think Frieza failed because he wore too many clothes!

Blu-ray. 4:3 aspect ratio

Audio: Japanese (broadcast audio) Latin American Spanish dub, English dub. Z release includes Remastered English dub with Kikuchi score and Original Uncut English dub audio with Johnson/Faulconer score

All the correct opening and endings (I think only Original Dragon Ball has this problem though)

NEP included (audio switches to Japanese for English and Spanish audio ala the Dragon Box release except for the original English dub from Ginyu Assault onwards since they did dub those)

Japanese text for title cards and end credits

Special Features
Dragon Ball- clips from Harmony Gold and original BLT dub , OP for HG and BLT dub. Japanese preview for Z episode 1. Toriyama Retrospective

DBZ - Clips from original Ocean dub. Rock the Dragon, Ultimate Uncut opening, Faulconer Z opening. Interviews with both Japanese and English casts

DBGT: Step into the Grand Tour. "A grand problem" bonus episode.

I think the English NEPs for Z were often a little bit different from the Japanese ones, so there might be timing issues using the audio for them whereas GT used the exact footage since they were given all the raw Dragon Box material but just inserted their version of the GT logo at the beginning. Plus I don't think they ever did them at all for the Ultimate Uncut episodes

Ah my mistake for some reason I thought the dub NEP for Ginyu Assault-end or the series used the same footage as the Japanese NEP.

And I'm pretty sure you're right they didn't bother with them at all for the UUE episodes so if they did include the NEP those episodes would go without in English.
