Toonami Rewind Block On Fridays.
Re: Toonami Rewind Block On Fridays.
Re: Funimation's acknowledgement of Ocean's tenure on the show. Sure they released the limited edition Rock the Dragon boxset but even that was kept separate from their in-house even though it logically should have used the entire edited original dub that aired on Toonami or at least up to Goku's Alive? (Since the Captain Ginyu and Frieza saga dubs did use the eponymous Rock The Dragon theme).
And yes redubbing the Ocean cast's portion of the tv show was a necessary evil to have the entire 291 episodes visually uncut, but that really doesn't explain redubbing the 3 Z movies Ocean did with Pioneer since they were already uncut and Funimation's redub was arguably less uncut since they originally included replacement scores nobody liked or asked for and even when the Shunsuke Kikuchi score was put back in, for whatever reason, Head Cha La is excluded in Dead Zone and World's Strongest and Gohan's insert songs are left as instrumentals and their Tree of Might dub still uses the less faithful tv dub script as a base instead of the more accurate Pioneer/Ocean home video script. You can claim "vocal consistency" but then you look at the original Dragon Ball movie dubs with 3 different Gokus, 3 different Bulmas, 3 different narrators, 2 different Oolongs, and realize only Path to Power synchronizes with the tv series casting and that argument falls apart.
There's also the tendency for the Funimation cast refer to certain Funimation Studios actors as original x character which is bullshit since obviously Nadolny isn't the original Gohan or young Goku, Vollmer isn't the original Bulma (she's not even the original Texas Bulma) and Chris Cason isn't the original Tien.
I don't doubt that actors like Chris Sabat and Sean Schemmel have respect for the Vancouver cast and that Funimation doesn't mind profiting off people's nostalgia for the Ocean era but the overall mentality from Funimation Studios as a whole seems to be "Well that really wasn't OUR dub that doesn't count, that was something else" even though it totally was their dub with the same guys running the show up top and most of the same writing staff.

Re: Toonami Rewind Block On Fridays.
I think somebody mentioned the original plan was to re-release the entire OG inhouse dub along with the RtD set, but that plan fell through. It would've been nice if that had happened, but I guess the OG inhouse dub wasn't distinct enough from the remastered dub to justify further saturating the market.MasenkoHA wrote: Sun May 19, 2024 2:57 am Re: Funimation's acknowledgement of Ocean's tenure on the show. Those first 2 seasons had an entirely different cast, a different score, and a greater nostalgic interest due to them being out of print for years. It's worth noting many fans don't even realise the remastered dub is different to the Toonami broadcast.
Re: Toonami Rewind Block On Fridays.
And that's a good point and on it's own it's somewhat understandable that Funimation didn't see a point in including the edited in-house dub since it's really not that noticeably different from the uncut remasted dub (as long as you're watching with the Mike Smith and company score). But idk it's the feeling the need to redub the already uncut movies for me *shrug*90sDBZ wrote: Sun May 19, 2024 9:41 amI think somebody mentioned the original plan was to re-release the entire OG inhouse dub along with the RtD set, but that plan fell through. Also, just wanted to bring up how weird it is to see that Adult Swim now starts at 5pm every day???? I haven't followed Cartoon Network in years so learning that is mind-blowing. I remember when Adult Swim starting at 9pm was such a a big deal and now it starts DURING THE DAY????
I think that confirms something I've been thinking about for years: Kids don't watch TV anymore. They just watch streaming, app content and online videos. And Cartoon Network/Adult Swim is aware of this, hence the shift to Adult Swim. My younger sister didn't even know what commercials were. She called them ads, which shows she just watches online or app-based content. She was born in 2010 for context, the same year I used to watch Kai on Nicktoons on TV as 13 year old. Oh, the irony.
Anyway, I feel like Cartoon Network has basically become overtaken by Adult Swim, which I think airs one hour longer than Cartoon Network now. Honestly, Adult Swim should just takeover the whole channel at this point and rename it Swim Network or something. That way, we can get more classic cartoons (like their current Checkered Past block) and even new anime like Daima on the channel.
If Daima is announced to air on this hypothetical Swim Network, that would be an interesting development. I mean, imagine Rick and Morty being able to air weekdays 4-5pm followed by an hour of Dragon Ball Daima, or maybe even a mix of Kai, Super, and Daima airing from 5-7pm like classic Toonami aired DB, Z, and GT from 5-7pm.
Anyway, for Dragon Ball to last on TV, they need to lean on nostalgia (airing classic Dragon Ball content) mixed with TV premiere content (which I imagine might be Daima), followed by streaming options.

Re: Toonami Rewind Block On Fridays.
You're funny man. And yeah, I tried that out and the result was awkward. Anyway, either Swim Network or even just Swim would be fine with me. Honestly, Adult Swim now handles Cartoon Network BETTER THAN CARTOON NETWORK at this point. With how they're doing stuff like Checkered Past and Toonami/Toonami Rewind, I feel like them overtaking Cartoon Network would only benefit Dragon Ball's future on cable. The idea of getting Toonami back to a Monday thru Friday afternoon block (which I never experienced) and bringing Daima for premiere episodes would be amazing.Cure Dragon 255 wrote: Sun May 19, 2024 10:38 pmmecha3000 wrote: Sun May 19, 2024 10:14 pm Also, just wanted to bring up how weird it is to see that Adult Swim now starts at 5pm every day???? And for the hell of it, maybe even bring Boruto back on for a one two punch of new Dragon Ball/Naruto dubbed content. I know Boruto didn't do well Saturday nights on Toonami, but airing it five days a week would definitely work better for it.

Boruto did too well with kids and flopped with adults, which means it's dead weight to Adult Swim.mecha3000 wrote: Sun May 19, 2024 10:53 pmYou're funny man. BTW did you know that in Latin America Adult Swim is an entirely separate channel that constantly airs anime at all times? DBZ is being rerun to death and so is Naruto and even Saint Seiya.
But the main difference being that Cartoon Network is still a success in Latin America, it pulls off awesome ratings as the number one kids network and its not the pitiful numbers USA gets nowadays either!

Re: Toonami Rewind Block On Fridays.
Not only Cartoon Network is overtaken by Adult Swim, but Cartoon Network in the US nowadays is pretty much "dead" in the eyes of older fans. I'm saying this as someone who grew up with Cartoon Network and their shows as a child. There hasn't been any good animated programming from them in the 2020s. Also, traditional broadcast/cable TV is no longer as lucrative and risky as it used to be.mecha3000 wrote: Sun May 19, 2024 10:14 pm Also, just wanted to bring up how weird it is to see that Adult Swim now starts at 5pm every day???? In case you didn't know, Cartoon Network has a programming block called Cartoonito (which was originally a programming block on Cartoon Network UK launched in 2006), which focuses on animated programming aimed towards preschool children. TBH, Cartoon Network nowadays isn't as good as it used to be in the 1990s, 2000s, and early 2010s (I'm not counting the not the era of ill-fitting live-action programming from 2007-2014).
I don't think there'll be a chance Dragon Ball Daima will get aired on an American television network. Correct me if I'm wrong, but the last time a Dragon Ball anime was on an American television network was Dragon Ball Super (Funimation dub) on Adult Swim's Toonami from 2017-2019. Once Crunchyroll acquires the license for the new Dragon Ball Daima anime after it begins airing in Japan, I bet they'll make it available only on Crunchyroll and some other popular streaming services outside Japan.

Sailor Moon is trending on Twitter along with Toonami Rewind. This tells me this broadcast is getting the word of mouth hype it needed to succeed.
Re: Toonami Rewind Block On Fridays.
Saw that myself. I even tweeted as I watched Rewind. Never watched Sailor Moon before today, but my older cousin had VHS tapes of it. Don't think I'm going to become a fan as the series seems too cutesy for my tastes. But I don't mind following it on Rewind every week or other week and leaving it at that. As for DBZ Kai and Naruto, it felt nice to see them air on Toonami together on a weekday, which is what I wished had happened back in 2010 with Kai and Shippuden. Who knows? Maybe Kai The Final Chapters and Shippuden can air side by side one day on Rewind? I'm also hoping OG Naruto can air ALL 220 of its episodes this time as the last 11 never aired on Cartoon Network. I was so annoyed at that as a kid. They were SO close! Hopefully, Rewind is successful and moves to a five days a week block so Naruto can finish its run quickly.Cure Dragon 255 wrote: Fri May 31, 2024 11:21 pm Sailor Moon is trending on Twitter along with Toonami Rewind. Also, how nice and poetic that Dragon Ball Z (Kai) and Sailor Moon can air together again UNCUT and with more accurate and redubbed scripts. Shows how far anime has come from when they first aired back in the '90s.

I was about to PM you but the site didnt work and I couldnt. Thank god you already knew. I think this is a great way to bring back hype (Both word of mouth AND ratings) to Adult Swim and Toonami. I think this was a terrific decision.
And I think you might actually get a kick out of Sailor Moon, it is NOT Pretty Cure, it is NOT a cutesy series, it doesnt have the hardcore fighting of DBZ but it is CERTAINLY edgy enough. You might be surprised mecha, if you try it out you might like it. If you have free time on Fridays it might be worth your while if you watch it. I know its NOT an adult show but neither is DBZ. It has enough edge to be appealing.
Until DBZ came along Sailor Moon had the goriest death scene ever on Toonami, even edited as it was back then.

Re: Toonami Rewind Block On Fridays.
Oh, my bad then, I'll give Sailor Moon a chance then. Also, side note: Is it just where I live or were all the commercials more adult than kid toned? Even before Adult Swim started! It's almost like sponsors know the current generation of kids don't watch TV so they're marketing to older viewers. Also, Cartoon Network ending at 5pm. Still weird to me, but again, maybe Adult Swim should just take ownership of Cartoon Network, even if they keep the name. They brought Toonami back from death, and their current version has now outlived the original Toonami. I think Cartoon Network would be in good hands with them, as evidenced by their Checkered Past block.Cure Dragon 255 wrote: Sat Jun 01, 2024 1:10 am I was about to PM you but the site didnt work and I couldnt. Also, most of Cartoon Network's new episodes for their shows airs Saturday mornings it seems now??? Weird. I haven't watched Cartoon Network ever since I was a kid so it's surreal and sad in some ways to see what it's become. Still, based on how Adult Swim is doing things, maybe they're the future of the channel.
If this Toonami Rewind does well, why not bring Toonami back to weekdays permanently and perhaps even premiere new anime on the block like Dragon Ball Daima. I still believe streaming is now how most people consume media, which I'm sure there's evidence for, but like someone else said (I believe Dragon Ball Ireland), if Japan is airing Daima on Fuji TV, why not elsewhere too? There can be a balance between streaming AND traditional TV if channels and companies are smart about it, based on Toonami Rewind and MeTV Toons pivoting towards nostalgia-based programming (possibly mixed with new programming eventually).
Also, is your user name inspired by Pretty CURE and DRAGON Ball???

Re: Toonami Rewind Block On Fridays.
Yes actually, Pretty Cure is really great. It IS a cutesy show but it learns from the mistakes of Sailor Moon AND Dragon Ball and ends up a great mix of both. That means great fights with great animation and fast pacing. The series IS too cute but the badass fights keep it appealing. The series was created and given its feel by three great men, Takashi Washio the producer, Akira Inagami the Character Designer and one DAISUKE NISHIO who directed Dragon Ball Z and Air Ride, if you can stomach the cuteness and focus on the fights it is great. I dont mind the cuteness, I love it in fact. So its tailor made for me.

Yup, Daima will be airing on Fuji TV. I could be wrong but if its coming to traditional TV in Japan I don't know why other territories would be any different. Okay, thanks for confirming that. Also, through Sailor Moon, Toonami Rewind revealed the origin of CureDragon's user name so that's another thing that made it worth it! Jokes side, I hope this block gets real momentum and can move beyond just the nostalgia block and maybe eventually become main Toonami.Dragon Ball Ireland wrote: Sat Jun 01, 2024 2:20 amYup, Daima will be airing on Fuji TV. Honestly though, I also think it's fine the way it is. Most people aren't going to follow a Toonami block every weekday in this day and age, especially kids nowadays. So, maybe Toonami Rewind can expand Mon-Fri for older Gen Z/Millennial fans WHILE Saturday Toonami is the premiere block for new anime that EVERYONE watches, which is less of a commitment and most people are off during that time anyway and it's just one night to follow everything.
Either way, I'm interested to hear about the ratings and see where this block goes.

Sadly Naruto and DBZKai ratings wont be revealed until they actually figure in the top 200 reruns. Sure DBZKai is pretty popular and HAS appeared on that list even now, but it is Sailor Moon that will be counted as a new show due to the new dub. Its like an entirely new show, different cast, different media ratings different everything. I think this will be a success for Toonami. There is certainly word of mouth hype.

Re: Toonami Rewind Block On Fridays.
I wonder if a Toonami channel would work in the US, like what the UK and Ireland had from 2003 to 2007? I know historically Cartoon Network has liked the perk of royalties that come with their original programming, but does anyone watch the main channel anymore? Might be better at this point to just have a 24/7 Adult Swim or Toonami channel and move all the original content to Boomerang.
