A super specific question about Wonder Island

Post by JGTavares » Tue Jun 04, 2024 2:52 pm

Hello everyone, sorry for any mistakes as I'm not very used to using forums. I want to transcribe and translate into my language (Brazilian Portuguese) all the comments on Toriyama's works that I can find. Right in the first one of Wonder Island, we have this editor's comment, those made to catch the readers' attention:

The most obvious would be Fasshonaburu Gyagu, but if you look, it’s ク, it doesn’t have a Dakuten, so it would be gyaku instead. If you look closely, it seems to have a little mark next to the ク, so first I theorized that the Dakuten simply faded over time, but I looked at several different photos in differents auctions and they all are like this, so I find it unlikely. Then, I thought it might simply be a typo, or something intentional, because "ギャク" (gyaku) in hiragana is ぎゃく, which is the reading for the Kanji 逆 (reverse; opposite), being a pun between Gag and gyaku, also saying it to be the opposite of fashionable. It was a theory I came up with, but I’m not sure either, so I’d like to know what you think about it

It says "gyagu" (gag), the font just makes the dakuten a bit hard to see.
