Is Piccolo a good "father" or does he fulfill a different role?
A lot of people call Piccolo a great father but I think that is kind of oversimplifying his role.
There is a scene in Super right before Hit assassinates Goku. Gohan is keeping a secret for Goku about something, and he tries lying to Piccolo about it. Piccolo simply tells him "Gohan, there can be no secrets between us." and Gohan immediately admits that he is right and tells Piccolo the truth.
So I think Piccolo's role in Gohan's life goes deeper than just being a father. He is more like Gohan's spiritual guide or his life coach or something. I don't have the right word for it but I know it's not "father."

I don't remember seeing Piccolo spitting any eggs, so he has no kids to begin with. I don't think we can say he is a good or bad "father".

It’s called mentorship. Pretty sure this idea of Piccolo being “Gohan’s father” was a joke from TFS and some people started to take it way too seriously.

Piccolo is absolutely not just a "martial arts master" for Gohan, but a complete parental figure
Who has been present in Gohan's life longer than Goku(because Goku was dead most of the time).
So, yeah. He's a good father.

People wrote:Trunks and Mai have such a weird relationship. It's bizarre.
Also people wrote:Piccolo is Gohan's father, despite among other nonsense, the age difference being just four years.

Toriyama himself referred to Piccolo as "Gohan's spritual father" so it's not exactly just TFS jokes being taken too seriouslyHugo Boss wrote: Fri Jul 19, 2024 7:31 am It’s called mentorship. Piccolo actually calls Gohan a son during the Cell beam struggle in the Latin dub.Hugo Boss wrote: Fri Jul 19, 2024 7:31 am It’s called mentorship. Pretty sure this idea of Piccolo being “Gohan’s father” was a joke from TFS and some people started to take it way too seriously.

After Googling: A spiritual father is someone God has placed in our lives for our spiritual well being. We should submit to them, give our hearts and serve and honour them. In return God will bring good to us through them. They are a source of life to us through Christ.MasenkoHA wrote: Fri Jul 19, 2024 3:23 pmToriyama himself referred to Piccolo as "Gohan's spritual father" so it's not exactly just TFS jokes being taken too seriouslyHugo Boss wrote: Fri Jul 19, 2024 7:31 am It’s called mentorship. Regardless of what he is trying to say here, I wouldn’t exactly describe their relationship like that. A spiritual father is a very religious and ethical type of father figure (definitely not what Piccolo is lol). Perhaps he was trying to say spiritual teacher, though this relationship is very similar in nature, it’s more about commitment to spiritual growth. Still, not sure how this works on this case.MasenkoHA wrote: Fri Jul 19, 2024 3:23 pm Toriyama himself referred to Piccolo as "Gohan's spritual father" so it's not exactly just TFS jokes being taken too seriously

Anyway, what I’m talking about is the bond shared between a father and a son. The manga doesn’t portray their relationship like that nor Toriyama.
Yeah, I’ve also heard of that. But that’s not exactly what we describe as a real father and son relationship. It’s more like how Piccolo feels about it (I like you as if you were my son). But Gohan certainly doesn’t see him in that way (he is like a teacher or mentor).ZombieVito wrote: Fri Jul 19, 2024 7:23 pm Piccolo actually calls Gohan a son during the Cell beam struggle in the Latin dub.

Yeah I somehow doubt Toriyama was using that through a Christian lensGogetason wrote: Fri Jul 19, 2024 8:13 pmAfter Googling: A spiritual father is someone God has placed in our lives for our spiritual well being. I've always likened him to a kind of close family friend who is technically only Gohan's teacher, but they've become very close that Piccolo is like a close family uncle.
He's not a father in the sense that he cares for Gohan in a parental manner, but he damn well wants the best for Gohan.
