Goku's character development

Discussion, generally of an in-universe nature, regarding any aspect of the franchise (including movies, spin-offs, etc.) such as: techniques, character relationships, internal back-history, its universe, and more.

Goku's character development

Post by Gogetason » Sat Jul 13, 2024 7:05 pm

Do you think Goku developed as a character? if so explain how?

And do you consider these changes hes had chararcter development:

Goku starts off wild/near primitive or ignorant of the world, unable to tell girls apart from boys and naive. By the time we get to the Piccolo diamo arc hes able to discern girls from boys and we can tell hes less naive, like you wouldn't expect a similar situation like with the pterodactyl at the beginning of the show to happen again with this changed goku. And from here on he becomes more serious and more resolute in dire situations. His near primitive or ignorant trait becomes changes/improves some what by the time we get to the cell arc where we see him obeying traffic laws as he navigates through the street in his car with his family and having picnics.

And during the majority of early dragon ball goku would aim to finish his opponents until Piccolo jr, who he spared only so that kami could live. Piccolo then saved his sons life later on which may have changed gokus perspective on villians, thinking they could change if given a chance. which was part of the reason he spared vegeta. He trys to do the same with fireza but learns then that not all villians can change as frieza goes to earth looking for him because he went soft on him. We learn that he was ready to finish frieza for good this time because he did so in the future time line. Fast forward to the cell arc gohan is shown toying with cell Goku tells him to finish cell, showing that he learned from the event with frieza. Goku doesnt spare any villains after that.

Also for about half the series he always has the symbol of his last master on his shirt. On Namek he has his own symbol because he becomes his own master,. He then goes full circle by training Gohan, Goten and Trunks for fusion, and Oob.

I'd like to hear what everyone thinks so type away please and thanks :D

If no one is responding to your thread, perhaps consider what it is you’ve given people to start out with. I see what’s basically a short list, and then a whole bunch of links I don’t recognize and am certainly not going to click.

I would recommend you expand more on what YOU think, and ask more specific questions.

For what it's worth, I agree that Goku has some compelling character development, it's just not as obviously delineated compared to the typical redemption arcs of say Piccolo and Vegeta. I've never agreed with the assertion that Goku is a "static character". He definitely changes throughout the manga. In Super, he is perhaps more stagnant.

I would say Goku gained wisdom and knowledge from his adventure and age. As a kid Goku didn't know anything about the world and humans, he didn't know what a female looked like. He didn't know what a lie was.

However after growing up, he knew when someone was lying to him and knew how to tell if someone is wearing a disguise by hearing the hints someone tells him. He even knows how to bribe someone to get him to help Goku.
Goku was so smart that he knew how to train like a expert and knew how to teach others.

DBS Goku has lost a lot of knowledge that he gained as he matured in DB/DBZ.

A lot of anime characters will literally have a speech about their character development, and explain their own arc out loud while melodramatic music plays. *cough Vegeta and Piccolo cough*

Goku doesn't explain his own character development. But we see him from childhood through adulthood and he clearly evolves over that time. And he learns a lesson in almost every story arc.
