Terrific performances by awful and or miscast actors.
As a Latin American the Funimation dub is REALLY ANATHEMA to me... but If I had to praise a terrible actor it would be Sean Schemmel's King Kai's horrified reaction as Frieza gets split in two, this is awesome because it helped keep the horror of the scene, even in the extremely censored version aired on The CW.
"Frieza gets split in two"
"King Kai lets out an extremely horrified gasp"
Also I cant help but love Goku's "Gosh, how sad. These girls must be poor, they cant afford clothes" thing on Funi OG DB and the same goes for Bulma in the same scene-

The "gosh these girls must be poor they can't afford clothes" line always bothered me. It was just established like 3 episodes prior that Goku has no concept of money. One of those instances of Funimation keeping the intent of a line but rewriting it in a way that's still wrong. The original Japanese line about how they were naked but not taking a bath was fine.
Anyways as far as miscast but terrific performance Brian Drummond and Pauline Newstone as Vegeta and Frieza are obvious ones to me. Great performances but all wrong for the characters. Drummond probably wasn't miscast as much as he was misdirected on how Vegeta should sound. It's a perfectly fun Saturday Mornin Cartoon villain voice but all wrong.
For good performances from bad actors. I remember Tiffany Vollmer doing a surprisingly decent job with the Trunks special. I think that was the first time she dropped the over the top vapid valley girl schtick. And she did have fun line reads every now and then like her "Don't! Be! Mad!" bit in episode 9 of Dragon Ball.
Probably going to get the most pushback for this but I don't really like Kelamis Goku but have to give him his props for channeling his inner Nozawa in World's Strongest with his Kaio-Ken

Well, good thing we are praising the performance and not the scripts. I did know someone would mention it and I agree. But the line is so hilarious and since it doesnt harm any dub I actually watch DB with I dont really mind it.MasenkoHA wrote: Thu Jun 13, 2024 10:54 pm The "gosh these girls must be poor they can't afford clothes" line always bothered me. I know SOMEONE will say "This performance is shit too" BUT for the line I do think its an hilarious performance.

I was going to say Pauline Newstone as Freeza but MasenkoHA got there first, great performance but not for Freeza.
Several of the Ocean Group actors were misdirected in Funimation's original Dragon Ball Z dub, Ian Corlett had a good superhero voice, Brian Drummond was told very little other than Vegeta was small, a Prince and an alien and developed the voice we love on those superficial characteristics. Matt Smith's Tien/Tenshinhan, I don't know what the rationale behind his casting was, but it wasn't right. The Westwood dub was produced in a hurry so we can forgive the miscasts in it. The Ocean dub of Kai, from everything we've heard cast and directed the characters faithfully so hopefully one day we will still see it.
Sean Schemmel's Kaio-Sama/King Kai would probably be a fine voice for a purely comedic character. Most people's issue with it is that it lacks the gravitas of Don Brown's performance and isn't suitable for a character that's meant to be a God.
I haven't seen Code Lyoko but everyone I know who has said that the Big Green cast are capable of serious acting. I don't blame them for the Dragon Ball movie and special dubs they recorded in Paris in the early 2000s because David Gasman pretty much said they had no direction at all.

Everyone and their dog insists that Jose Luis Castañeda is an awful actor and too "Overcast" in the Franchise, even when the Japanese wasnt really any better by their own admission. So I will say I love his performances.

He's a good voice actor outside of his DB work and was very good as Nappa, but like Chris Sabbat, giving him multiple roles will inevitably make several of them sound terrible and unsuitable for the character.Cure Dragon 255 wrote: Mon Jul 29, 2024 8:24 pm Everyone and their dog insists that Jose Luis Castañeda is an awful actor and too "Overcast" in the Franchise, even when the Japanese wasnt really any better by their own admission. He isn't a terrible actor but except for Kibito, he was miscast in most of his DB roles.M16U3L2015 wrote: Tue Jul 30, 2024 3:11 pm He's a good voice actor outside of his DB work and was very good as Nappa, but like Chris Sabbat, giving him multiple roles will inevitably make several of them sound terrible and unsuitable for the character.
I am pretty sure Cure Dragon may disagree with me with the following but I can't help to say that Nappa and Dr. Gero's Kai VAs (Héctor Reynoso and Guillermo Coria respectively) were a better cast and suited those characters more than José Luis.
Hell, I even wonder why César Soto (Nappa in his GT cameo) didn't voice him from the beginning. He's got that raspy voice that goes perfect with Nappa's juggernaut appearance and brute personality.

This is the best clip for all the recasts in Kai Latin America. I HATED Kai Nappa but that's due to the lines he was given and the same goes for Dr Gero, who also benefits from not being called Doctor Maki in Kai.
In this clip everyone sounds great.

So Goku learned about money 3 episodes prior and this actually shows character developmentMasenkoHA wrote: Thu Jun 13, 2024 10:54 pm The "gosh these girls must be poor they can't afford clothes" line always bothered me.
