Would you like all of Dragon Ball to appear on Netflix (U.S.)?

Post by TechExpert2021 » Tue Aug 20, 2024 4:42 pm

We are now in an era in which most people usually resort to streaming services to watch their favorite series and movies without needing to buy them on home video or wait until they air on a specific TV channel.

In Dragon Ball's case, would it be interesting if Crunchyroll made a deal with Netflix to get all of Dragon Ball (DB, Z, GT, Kai, Super, and Daima) added to Netflix's catalog? Netflix in the U.S. already has anime in its catalog so I think Dragon Ball will work there.

However, I'm not saying it will happen; the chances of that are zero.

Absolutely great. It would be absolutely monumental.

I could not care less about having it on US Netflix (not sure why you'd even specify that rather than Netflix in general). Even if it were available internationally it wouldn't change much because I already have so many ways to watch it and I'm not sure how much of a boon it'd be in terms of new viewers either.

I'm surprised Crunchyroll and Toei haven't done it already, here in LATAM, Crunchyroll has recently this year sub-licensed several anime to Netflix, such as Jujutsu Kaisen Spy X Family, Mob Psycho or My Hero Academia.

In addition, Toei licensed One Piece to both.

Toei wanted to test the waters with One Piece but more importantly they couldnt afford to play hard to get, One Piece needed Netflix. If Dragon Ball joins Netflix it is NETFLIX that needs Dragon Ball.

Another thing that is to be taken in account is that DBZ is very popular on Traditional TV in Latin America, if it joins Netflix it will be much less attractive to broadcasters.

I'm honestly surprised it hasn't happened yet. Netflix have gotten lots of super popular stuff, at least here. I've seen Jujutsu Kaisen, Attack on Titan, My Hero Academia and other mega successful shows like that pop up on the UK and Irish Netflix.

Crunchyroll is also not the right platform for Dragon Ball. Its an otaku/weeb-centric service that caters more to adult audiences or hardcore anime fans. Netflix is more universal, far more kids have access to it on their tablets, phones and other devices, and thusly Dragon Ball gets more exposure.

I'd actually be more interested if Netflix got the rights to Dragon Ball outside the US. The US would just get the Funimation dub as they always have, but outside the US? Netflix is a rare example of a streaming service we may be able to count on to acquire any of the alternate English dubs, if other shows are any example.
  • In Southeast Asia Netflix streamed the Hong Kong dub of Yo-Kai Watch instead of the US version, which I believe aired on Animax, as other dubs recorded at Red Angel Media have. By the same token if Netflix streamed original Dragon Ball in Southeast Asia perhaps the Animax dub could make a return
    • Super Saiyan Prime also said due to some technical difficulty the Hong Kong dub of Yo-Kai Watch was streamed internationally. If this happened to a hypothetical Animax Dragon Ball stream that dub could finally get wide exposure and most of all the one thing it desperately needed at the time - recordings
  • Episodes of the Canadian dub of Paw Patrol streamed in the UK instead of the British dub. Apparently this was a mistake and Netflix apologized, but what other franchise has had Canadian dubs that aired in the UK
    • How about we mention Canada while we're at it? They've never had Kai legally outside of home releases. Give us the Ocean dub and I'll forever be grateful to you Netflix
Netflix UK had Battle of Gods, Resurrection F and Broly (subbed) for a while. I suspect they probably performed well as all those movies did great for anime movies in theatres here, the former two in particular got lots of reruns on Sky Cinema so presumably Netflix saw the potential.

Not that I think it will happen (I don't) but for all the people here who always ask "will the entire Dragon Ball series ever be redubbed?", your only chance of ever seeing that is if Netflix want a new English dub. They redubbed Evangelion, which is a much shorter series so not nearly as much of an investment. Then again Netflix does spend absurd amounts of money, as recent Stranger Things episodes reportedly cost $30 million per episode and then there's shows like Friends Netflix paid $100 million to renew.

Supposedly the French branch were working hard to get the rights. Not sure if it ever happened, probably not, I'd think we would have heard something by now as France are nuts about Dragon Ball.
