I actually made a forum asking this same question 1 or 2 years ago. Basically I think it's the characters that keep people coming back. They're iconic and beloved world round for a reason. It's also just fun to kick back with Goku, Vegeta, Bulma, Piccolo or any of the cast and watch them attempt to save the day while getting up to wild antics.

They have a particular approach to dire situations. A mix of negligence and honor that usually makes for fun developments, however other times it makes them look bad or sloppy. I don't want to say NEVER SEEN before, but I've never have seen it before. Things work out in the end but they tend to burn down the house to get it done.
In a way, they remind me of THE BOYS.

That’s true, even all of these years later I don’t think I've ever seen a protagonist quite like Goku. I think Toriyama miraculously stumbled into a protagonist that’s simultaneously smart, dumb, serious&silly. A guy who wants to get as strong as he can but isn’t actually obsessed with using it to achieve a specific end, but rather just continue fighting strong opponents so he can test his ability.

Its really a perfect protagonist for this kind of adventure/martial arts story, supporting characters are extremely fun too.

I really hope the old shows arent forgotten no matter how many new Dragon Ball Series are made.
