About Freeza and the Saiyans

Post by super michael » Tue Aug 13, 2024 8:35 am

I was wondering how come when Freeza lose his tail, he can regain it back when he gets revived or use machines. Saiyans on the other hand doesn't seems to regain their tail at all.

Even when a Saiyan dies and get revived or eat a Senzu Bean, it still doesn't regrow. Vegeta even said his tail would regrow to one of Freeze henchmen, yet it never grew back.

It the Saiyan use the same machine as Freeza, would it grow back? Why don't they have Shenron or Whis grow their tail back?

Freeza only regains his tail when he transforms, as his body morphs and physically changes it just seems to happen as part of the process. It's the only way he can technically regenerate, I guess Toriyama thought for Cell and Boo that would be one of the next stages for making a villain more difficult to defeat.

For saiyans it's a combination of genetics and their level of strength.

Toriyama said tails were a recessive trait, which we seen with each member of the Son family possessing it less and demonstrating less ability with it. Kami removed Goku's tail but he may have done something off-screen to prevent it growing back. Gohan was only able to regrow his tail in the manga one time when he was exposed to the bruitz waves from Vegeta's fake moon.

It's also possible hybrid Saiyans are generally born without tails as Goten, Trunks and Bra/Bulla didn't have them. Gohan could be an exception to the rule or an anomaly. It also seems likely that the more diluted a hybrid's saiyan blood is the less likely they are to have tails, as the one quarter-breed we know of (Pan) doesn't have a tail and neither were Goku Jr or Vegeta shown to have one.

Vegeta was told by a doctor the medical machine couldn't regrow his tail along with the wounds. Vegeta said it would grow back but it never did, likely because he reached the level of power a saiyan must be at where they no longer have the ability to regrow it, at that point their body is basically just telling them it's a nuisance.

Because Toriyama didn’t wanna draw them anymore lol, there’s really no diagetic explanation in the story AFAIK. As the series went, the defining saiyan transformation became SSJ and the tails were just phased out entirely. Even the U6 saiyans have almost zero association with tails.

Somewhat disappointing since tails were really a defining saiyan characteristic and also something we’d associate with Goku not only in a phenotypic sense but also in a narratively significant capacity as the tail is what led to Grandpa Gohans death.

The thing with the Saiyan tail became a forgotten point. Maybe AT didn't care about it anymore.
