Question about image songs

Post by Thanos6 » Fri Sep 06, 2024 5:18 pm

So I'm orgqnizing my collection of music from the original run of the anime; trying to get it all organized.

For the image songs, is there any big list of what characters each song is about? Anything sung by the original voice actor is obvious, of course; but for, say, all of the Hironobu Kageyama songs, my Japanese is not nearly good enough to understand most of the lyrics.

Thanks.

(Of course, there's more than just Kageyama on those albums.)

Minus the two character specials (Hit Song Collection 4 and 8 respectively) alone, that would be a rather long list (it may not exist in just about anywhere that isn't Japanese, probably not even in JP spaces themselves), and it's possible you might even have multiple for one character or even location (like the Room of Spirit and Time which has a really short one on collection 11, apparently) or none of those things at all. Maybe looking through the (original edition) booklets for which images appear next to a song's lyrics, or what's on the cover, the release date (and thus maybe arc), etc might be a clue? Not that I even get it, they pumped out way too many of them (some even being image before insert like the ones used in episodes 139 & 184) and crawled to a halt after project MONOLITH ceased to make them in 1993, only putting out one in 1994 and 1995 respectively that no one really bothers with (although collection 18 features members of the aforementioned group returning as "project DBZ" in 1996 when the show ended).

For my own part, I've listened to a few of them and can understand when a character, location, or event is being referenced (and have caught a few outside of the most popular ones), but I definitely don't want to listen through all of them (much less make any such list) because I don't even think it was necessary to have that many.

Oh, and as far as image songs from Forte Music (Shin/Susumu Oya) made for movies 10~13, they tend to spell out who it's about in the titles (and the lyrics are often very much related).

Of course! I'm just using him as an example since his output was so prolific. :D

I'll admit I'd be very surprised if that was true. I'm not saying you're wrong, just that I'd be surprised, given how much research and documentation is out there for the Kikuchi soundtrack.

Yeah, there's a couple of songs I've been able to figure out like that, but for the most part, I'm fairly clueless, lol.

Blame it on my obsessive compulsive tendencies, heh. If I start collecting things, I want to complete the collection, and have it organized (even if my personal definitions of "complete" and "organized" don't always match up with everyone else's).

I imagine there's a clear-cut difference between the two; While one of these was heard around the world with the show itself, the other is largely a JP-only extra that a great majority of those who've seen the show can and have definitely gone without. Not too sure a kenisu3000 will be rising up to do the same for all 20 CD's anytime soon (even though I and some others I know elsewhere can list out all the credits for every album and track on a music database site or two which I'd actually done for the 13 CD compilation recently).
Speaking of said collection, this thread is about the closest thing to a description of each individual track, although it doesn't go as far as to say what each is about, which for a lot of entries may very well be up to interpretation as there's no official (or even fanmade) listing beyond some track titles pointing in the direction of a character, place, or so.
