4K Ultra HD release for movies before DBS Super Hero?

Post by PowerPhantom245 » Tue Aug 27, 2024 10:20 pm

Is there any chance that movies before Super Hero comes out on 4K Ultra HD?
Since it's a movie, where it was shot on film, it would have a increase in quality from Blu-ray.
Blu-ray release of movies has gotten mixed reviews, particularly for movie with editing and censorship, but it would be nice to see if they get higher quality release.
At the very least, Battle of Gods ~ Broly should get 4K Ultra HD, since they are more recent.

Probably eventually yes. I'm kinda surprised we haven't seen Crunchyroll/Funimation released the TOEI remasters physically yet. Surely a lot of fans would have bought them by now and then 4K UHD releases of said movies could be announced to milk them even more. Hell Crunchyroll are releasing another new complete series boxset for the 2013/2014 Dragon Ball Z Blu-Rays, which is nowhere near as exciting as an announcement of the TOEI remasters would be.

Battle of Gods through Broly would require recompositing otherwise they'll just be upscales from a lower resolution. All their project compositions are 1080p and lower. It's a lot of work to redo all that. Khara did it for their Evangelion Rebuild movies but this is backwards ass Toei.

I fully expect the 35mm era movies to get a UHD release at some point, however.

Didn't know those movies were filmed that way.
Since those were newer movies, I thought they were compatible with 4K.

Original movies (1~17) definitely would look better on 4K UHD.
If Toei ever going to release movies on 4K UHD, I expect they would release as box set(s) then go on to individual release.
I can see those might get release on 40th anniversary of anime in 2026.

Even if Toei does a good 4K UHD remaster of the original 17 DB films, the issue is that they might censor them like what they did with their HD Blu-ray remasters of the same material (especially DBZ movies 11 and 12 where they censored the middle fingers).

Not to mention that they might not be willing to sell the licensing rights for the Japanese remasters to Crunchyroll in the first place. (This is what kept Funimation from being able to aquire the rights to the Dragon Box Z footage for over 6 years.) And since Crunchyroll still has the old Funimation Blu-ray masters they might not see it as being relevant to their market.

I suspect the difficulty licensing the Dragon Boxes originally was with regard to the packaging as Funimation is the only company who released their own variation of them with similar looking DVD cases.

It doesn't seem there was any issues with licensing the video masters. There were DVD releases in France and Spain based on the Dragon Boxes. Hell Funimation's singles for GT are near indistinguishable from the Dragon Boxes.

Even the US theatrical releases of Bardock: The Father of Goku and Broly: The Legendary Super Saiyan used the TOEI remasters. I suspect Crunchyroll could have just put them on disc, they just don't want to, at least for now.

Ugh.
Don't remind me that utter travesty. :problem:

Regards to movie, I stumbled interesting Tweet by Kineko Video.

It would be nice if Toei would release 4K UHD box set of movies; with uncut movie 11 and 12.

Has Toei done significant back catalog animation releases on 4K disc that might suggest this is a possibility? (I feel like I've asked this before). Do we know if they even did their recent restorations of the 80's/90's movies at 2160p? There is zero technical reason not to, but as far as I know their current digital streams are only in 1080, and Toei comes off as the sort of company that would settle for "good enough for the present". Not to mention that the Japanese movie blu-rays seemed like a tie-in product to Super Broly, and I don't see that happening again, let alone on a format that makes up 10% of monthly US movie disc sales at its best, to my memory. The second coming of Dragon Box The Movies at best, and Funiroll might not even consider it worth breaking up and releasing abroad. Which is a shame because I'd be game- they would be DVD upgrades at worst for me!
