I hate Crunchyroll's monopoly and refuse to pay for their streaming service in light of that. They're making too much money and gaining too much of a stranglehold on the anime industry.

I'll too be waiting for a Blu-ray release of DB Daima, rather than streaming it on Crunchyroll after it premieres as I refuse to (and I'll never) support their monopolization on the anime industry.MasenkoHA wrote: Thu Sep 12, 2024 1:41 pmYeah, unless Daima is getting rave "must see asap" reviews, I'll probably just wait for the blu-ray release.Dragon Ball Ireland wrote: Thu Sep 12, 2024 1:03 pm

I mean you're kinda late on that, Funi's had a monopoly since like 2007 lol; becoming Crunchyroll was essentially a "brand synergy" name change.TechExpert2021 wrote: Thu Sep 12, 2024 2:34 pmI'll too be waiting for a Blu-ray release of DB Daima, rather than streaming it on Crunchyroll after it premieres as I refuse to (and I'll never) support their monopolization on the anime industry.MasenkoHA wrote: Thu Sep 12, 2024 1:41 pmYeah, unless Daima is getting rave "must see asap" reviews, I'll probably just wait for the blu-ray release.Dragon Ball Ireland wrote: Thu Sep 12, 2024 1:03 pm

Re: Dragon Ball Daima trailer, October release date announced
I'm going to be watching Daima any way I can on October 11th, it's new Dragon Ball at the end of the day, and I'll do everything to see it at the earliest convenience.
Definitely going to pick up the Blu-Rays when they come out too. Aside from the odd theatrical screening that's the only thing I do that Crunchyroll benefit from, but physical media is important for fans like us to have our favourite movies and series without fear of the powers that be removing them or editing them in any way, so I'll continue to support it.
Now native companies like these have been absorbed into Crunchyroll and don't release anything Crunchyroll aren't putting out in the US, so there was a lot more variety before the moves towards "brand synergy". I'd take diversity for businesses any day, competition is also important to encourage them to work harder to make better products.

I mean, Manga UK and Madman Entertainment existed for well over a decade after that point. Yes they were repackaging and reauthoring a lot of Funimation's releases for UK and Australian audiences respectively, but they released content from other distributors like Viz, Cinedigm, Discotek, etc.jjgp1112 wrote: Thu Sep 12, 2024 3:52 pm I mean you're kinda late on that, Funi's had a monopoly since like 2007 lol; becoming Crunchyroll was essentially a "brand synergy" name change.

Honestly, listening to that latest trailer for Sparking Zero has reinforced for me that I simply don’t like Colleen Clinkenbeard as Goku, so I think I’d prefer either Sean Schemmel or Stephanie Nadolny. Nadolny coming back seems a bit too out there though.

And what about Gohan? Do you think Crunchyroll will have Stephanie Nadolny voice Mini Gohan and replace Colleen Clickenbeard in that role or have her only voice Mini Goku and retain Clickenbeard's role for Mini Gohan?
Anyway, I was surprised Nadolny was being brought back for the DB Daima English dub.

Always thought Naldony was great at capturing Goku’s more aloof goofier side, so I’m game for her return. I know I’ve said this before years ago but I still maintain that Naldony is perfect for Goku as a kid and Colleen is great for Gohan.
It's not too late. One day, it will be.

My ideal casting is Nadolny as kid Goku & Clinkenbeard as kid Gohan, tbh. I don't think she'll be both, more just kid Goku.TechExpert2021 wrote: Thu Sep 12, 2024 8:51 pm And what about Gohan? Also, why would you doubt it? I had Rawly Pickens (1 of the co-directors of the modern DB dubs since Super) like my tweet about how her getting cast in the dub would forever disprove the casting couch rumors Chuck Huber started several years ago, which people inferred to be about Nadolny. Not that anyone should've believed those because there was no proof, but yeah. So, I'm inclined to believe this unless official casting news contradicts it, in which case I'll accept it.

I'm pretty sure Nadolny said the reason for her losing her roles was because of a bad breakup with a higher-up at Funi, which makes me doubt she'd ever be able to return. Maybe the Crunchyroll buyout and takeover had some staff restructuring and that higher-up left? I also read something about her supposedly getting a lot of DUIs which might've had something to do with her leaving. Either way, I doubt she's returning, especially since Geekdom isn't an entirely reliable source anyway.
Re: Dragon Ball Daima trailer, October release date announced
AFAIK, Nadonly has never said the guy was a FUNi exec. What I HAVE found her saying back in 2019 is that she broke up with a guy in around 2007 who vowed to ruin her career & she assumed he must've. I wrote a whole post on my subreddit about it because I looked into the casting couch allegations because I saw those come up again months ago in regards to the #KickVic/#IStandWithVic shit & I wanted to see if there was any validity to it because I never saw any. All I found for any kind of receipts was...CodeOfMe wrote: Fri Sep 13, 2024 12:11 am I'm pretty sure Nadolny said the reason for her losing her roles was because of a bad breakup with a higher-up at Funi, which makes me doubt she'd ever be able to return. 1. A fake Facebook DM screenshot that was either Photoshopped, or someone pretending to be her,
2. Chuck Huber saying he'd heard rumors about someone being fired from FUNi due to refusing sexual advances for people that worked there,
Spoiler:
To say this, Chuck clearly misremembers details on years & names of stuff, so I genuinely can't trust he's completely telling the honest truth due to faulty memory & he never cited anyone who told him said rumors, just a "trust me bro"-type attitude & vague as fuck details. And this was mainly brought on because he was salty Vic got fired by FUNimation after their internal investigation because he's friends with him & wanted to stick up for him in his affidavit for the lawsuit Vic filed against them as a result, so he had ulterior motives to either make shit up, or pull previous rumors he never personally put stock in or talked about publicly to sway opinions in Vic's favor, not that it did a lot of good in that lawsuit. It's full of unsubstantiated bullshit as a result.
Back on Nadolny. I've heard she had a bunch of DUIs as well. However, I have to call into question if those really mattered to the execs at FUNimation. Like, a DUI isn't the worst thing in the world & it didn't become news at the time. The only time I've personally heard of them was years after the fact. While I don't wanna readily doubt she may have had some DUIs, she herself doesn't think that was the reason & she maintains it was her ex who fucked her over. So, when Sabat was looking to expand the cast for Kai since FUNimation had the wider pool of actors to pick & pull from & more money to pay them, she ended up being recast because of her ex. However, hers is the only one that wasn't readily explained or explainable. Tiffany Vollmer had left FUNimation & moved to New Orleans by then since outside of some of the video games, she'd dubbed all anime media with Bulma into it up until that point, Merideth McCoy was apparently living in Israel at the time, Sabat gave up a bunch of his secondary roles to new people, & other people had either left the company or retired from voice acting by then.
As for Geekdom, yeah, I'll admit that he has a spotty track record with news. His biggest fumble was the 4:3 HD remasters of Z that turned out just to be the shitty 16:9 Blu-Ray remaster, but in 4:3 instead because he heard from someone that works at FUNi about the 4:3 transfer, then assumed a bunch of shit & wanted to be seen as a great news source. I get the skepticism around him. However, I don't think he'd lie about this. It'd be too dumb to lie about, ngl. But, if it turns out not to be true, I'll admit I was wrong to believe it.

That said, every now and then a video of hers will come up on my tiktok fyp and she'll be doing the Goku voice for fans and it's...it's bad. Understandable since she hasn't done the voice in 16 years and there's a difference between doing a voice for fans and doing a voice in a professional setting. At the off chance her being re-hired isn't a load of bunk, to get Funi dub fans excited about a false rumor, hopefully the voice director can get a good performance out of her. That may be trying to squeeze blood from a stone though.
Re: Dragon Ball Daima trailer, October release date announced
Not...really. I assume that because everyone's being de-aged, Nozawa's gonna use her "kid" voice for Goku. Thus, they'll want to use an actress that can sound like a little boy; Colleen Clinkenbeard or Stephanie Nadolny. Why would they use Schemmel for that? If the rumor is circulating that Nadolny's coming back, then they're not gonna use him.MasenkoHA wrote: Fri Sep 13, 2024 3:04 am Because she hasn't done voice work for Funimation since....2008? Also, I described what happened in a previous post. Nadolny thinks that an ex-boyfriend of hers who vowed to ruin her reputation & career ended up doing so with FUNi, so when they were casting & recasting for Kai, they replaced her with Clinkenbeard. Some other people think it has to do with DUIs she might've gotten at the time, but I doubt that was the reason because it wasn't known at the time, so why would they care? They didn't even care about rumors around Vic or how people who worked there thought about his ego, so...
Although, that was also mainly speculation on Nadolny's part, as she doesn't 100% know & no one who works on the DB dubs has ever said why, so it could be any number of reasons, realistically. But, she's still friends with some of the other VAs at FUNi like Monica Rial & I think Colleen Clinkenbeard, so I think that's a better question for Chris Sabat.
I feel like she did better as Goku. I can agree that she wasn't great as Gohan, though her screams are unmatched by Clinkenbeard, tbh. They just come off more raw. Clinkenbeard often sounds like she doesn't know how to properly do it as Gohan, which is odd because her screams as Luffy have all the energy & force needed of her. I don't like Clinkenbeard as Goku, tbh. I think I've said it on this site elsewhere, but the voice tone & delivery is too close to when she plays Luffy & it's distracting as someone who legit loves the One Piece dub. And I say that even though Sanji's voiced by Eric Vale, who uses a similar voice to when he plays Trunks, Usopp is played by Sonny Strait using a similar voice to Krillin's, & Brook's played by Ian Sinclair, who uses a variant of his normal voice similar to how he plays Whis, though I never find those distracting since they're not 100% the same. Although, I find it funny that Sabat's current Piccolo voice is just his Zoro voice which he changed it from the more gruff voice he used to do 20 years ago.MasenkoHA wrote: Fri Sep 13, 2024 3:04 amI feel like I'm somewhere in the middle of Nadolny as Goku is the worst thing ever and Nadolny as Goku was the greatest thing ever. Anyways, back on topic. I think they could pull a good performance out of her. The ADR directors (Sabat, Pickens, etc) are usually good at doing that. Hell, when they got Brian Drummond back as Copy Vegeta in Super, they got a great performance out of him. Although, he's still been doing voice work, so he wasn't out of practice like Nadolny may be. I think if Sabat gets her to rewatch her older performances as reference for the voice tone, then gets her to do a more subdued performance than she used to do, I think we'll be in for a treat. I always thought that if the performances she did for Goku & Gohan were a bit more subdued & reserved more often, she'd be my ideal voice for at least kid Goku. Sound more natural when speaking like Clinkenbeard usually does with her deliveries rather than just doing a "cartoony" voice. I love when actors from old dubs from before they started being taken more seriously as a whole can come back & give way better deliveries. Most of the rest of the OG cast have been able to do that, so if she's really coming back, I'd love to hear what she could bring.

Re: Dragon Ball Daima trailer, October release date announced
The Dragon Ball dub is unwatchable in large part due to her. I don't agree that she ever captured any part of Goku's character. Her acting is horrible and Quint's nails on a chalkboard is more pleasant than her voice. Clinkenbeard has not done enough to give a great assessment of her take on Goku, but I liked what little we got. I have a strong opinion on this because I would like to enjoy the dub and Nadolny is an impediment to that.

I mean until an official announcement, it's all speculation. My money would be on Clinkenbeard voicing Goku, as she's been Goku's kid voice since 2010 but, as I already said, the characters in Daima are more chibified than actually de-aged which COULD be (which again I can't stress enough is pure speculation) Crunchyroll's rationale in just using Schemmel as Chibi Goku in Daima.Scsigs wrote: Fri Sep 13, 2024 4:17 am

And it's not like Crunchymation hasn't had adult men voice kid characters:https://youtu.be/-HtCmGhd6EQ?si=eGXlU39y9lwccSTn
I can't even begin to follow the logic in that. "It can't be Schemmel because there's a completely unverified rumor that it's Nadolny." Like...okay?Why would they use Schemmel for that? If the rumor is circulating that Nadolny's coming back, then they're not gonna use him
The key difference between Drummond and Nadolny is Drummond can act and Nadolny really cannot act. She does okay with Goku the simpleton and Goku the warrior but when she's called to task to show any sort of emotion like anger or grief her shortcomings as an actor become super apparent. One of the many big failings of the Funi dub of the Daimao arc is just how terrible her performance was since that arc required actual emotions from Goku.Anyways, back on topic. True. Not counting video games (which I hardly keep up with) she really only had Curse of the Blood Rubies to strut herself as Goku and she did fine. Most of the criticisms are pretty silly and amount to #NotMyKidGoku. I don't care that she uses the same voice for Goku that she uses for Goku Knockoff in One Piece any more than I care that Tara Strong only has like 4 different voices for her 5000 characters.ABED wrote: Fri Sep 13, 2024 4:38 am . I have a strong opinion on this because I would like to enjoy the dub and Nadolny is an impediment to that.
