Basically what the thread title says. I fear that the official Crunchyroll simulcast subs of DB Daima will use the Funimation dub names instead of the correct names. And since Kaioshin will be returning in Daima, I doubt that the infamous "Supreme Kai sama" name from Toei's official English simulcast subs of DB Super will make a comeback every time "Kaioshin-sama" is mentioned. I also doubt that the subs will use "King Kai Fist" every time "Kaioken" is mentioned (only if the Kaioken form returns in Daima). Ditto for the returning characters Kaio-sama, Turtle Hermit, Kuririn, and Tenshinhan going to be mentioned as "King Kai sama", "Master Roshi", "Krillin", and "Tien" respectively in Crunchyroll's official simulcast subs of Daima.
I understand it's a modern Toei thing and that they've mandated the use of Funimation dub names in official English subs since Dragon Ball Super Broly, but why would I want to see Funimation dub names in official English subs of DB anime and movie material? It takes away a reason why you're watching the original Japanese version instead of the dub.
Do you suspect that the official Crunchyroll simulcast subs of DB Daima will use the Funimation dub names?

I can't imagine them not using the dub names in the subs still. The fact that it's dumb is a non-factor for Toei.

Probably, yeah. Unfortunately it seems to be the standard now.
I'd need to rewatch my Super Hero Blu-Ray to check the subs, but I do recall the US Broly release had dub terms, and of course now all English-speaking territories use Funimation/Crunchyroll's discs so I can't see that precedent being stopped.

Do you have any info about international non-English broadcasts about the Dragon Ball anime or manga translations/editions? Please message me. Researching for a future book with Dragon Ball scholar Derek Padula

It's kind of a mix. It uses Krillin instead of Kuririn, but kept Kienzan and Makankosappo (which matches the theatrical subs IIRC; I distinctly remember Makankosappo in the theater at the very least). Maybe they justified those since Kai's dub used them early on.Dragon Ball Ireland wrote: Wed Oct 02, 2024 5:48 pm Probably, yeah. Unfortunately it seems to be the standard now.

I remember when when Dr Slump 97 was on Tubi the subtitles used Funi names for the Dragon Ball crossover like Shenron, Flying Nimbus, and Power Pole. That seemed ridiculous to me becaude Funi dub fans are not interested in Dr.Slump and probably weren't going to watch anyways
So if a show they weren't going to watch used them, I'm sure Toei will use them for subs on a show will they watch (since a lot of them wont want to wait until November for the dub)

Toei has been using dubism for their franchises for years. Not just with Dragon, but with other franchises too like Digimon.
