Will Steve Simmons return to sub Daima?
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe that Dragon Ball Super was the last Dragon Ball anime in which Steve Simmons (known by his online alias "Daimao", which he is a member on this forum) provided the official English subtitles for Funimation's home releases of Dragon Ball Super. And since DBS Broly, Toei, not only began doing their own official English subs in-house for future Dragon Ball anime and film productions (Daima included) but also implementing a corporate mandate that the subs must use dub names regardless of the language the subs are translated to.
Suppose Daima gets a home video release from Crunchyroll, do you think Simmons will return to provide official English subtitles for Daima or are they still going to rely on Toei's official English subs?

Re: Will Steve Simmons return to sub Daima?
Are you sure Steven Simmons didn't do the subtitles for Broly and Super Hero? According to ANN, he did the subtitles for those two films. I'm inclined to believe them since I don't recall the subs for Broly or Super Hero reading as stiffly as Toei's in-house subtitles usually do. They do use dub names, but that just seems to be a mandate from Toei & Crunchyroll, not a stylistic choice on the part of the translator. Regardless, Simmons seems to be Crunchyroll's go-to Dragon Ball home release translating guy, so I don't see why they'd move on from him now.

I don't see why not either. Steve Simmons subbed all of Dragon Ball for Funimation/Crunchyroll with the exception of original Dragon Ball episodes 1-13 and 29-153 (those were done by Clyde Mandelin).
Do you have any info about international non-English broadcasts about the Dragon Ball anime or manga translations/editions? Please message me. Researching for a future book with Dragon Ball scholar Derek Padula

Probably. When Crunchyroll was releasing Super pre-merger they did the subtitles in-house then Funimation had Steve Simmons re-translate the entire show for the home release. They'll probably do the same for Daima to keep tradition alive. Also I'm pretty sure he subbed Super Broly and Superhero since he's in the Blu-ray credits.

Your first sentence is accurate, with emphasis on "pre-merger." Your last sentence is also accurate.BootyCheeksJohnson wrote: Tue Oct 15, 2024 6:47 pm Probably. Well, Toei's "dub names must be in subs" mandate only applies to character names and it has not been extended to attack names, which is why Simmons's subs of Broly and Super Hero use the original Japanese attack names instead of the Funimation names. But what if Toei mandates the use of dub names of the attacks in official subs as well?CodeOfMe wrote: Tue Oct 15, 2024 10:37 am Are you sure Steven Simmons didn't do the subtitles for Broly and Super Hero? Then... there'll be dub attack names in the subtitles? I'm not sure what you're asking here. Toei certainly could mandate the use of dub attack names in the subtitles. I'm not sure it's that important to them, but they definitely could do it. It's not like any of us can really stop them.TechExpert2021 wrote: Fri Oct 18, 2024 12:10 am Well, Toei's "dub names must be in subs" mandate only applies to character names and it has not been extended to attack names, which is why Simmons's subs of Broly and Super Hero use the original Japanese attack names instead of the Funimation names. Does that mean you will not be translating Dragon Ball Daima?Daimao wrote: Wed Oct 16, 2024 11:27 amYour first sentence is accurate, with emphasis on "pre-merger."
