Re: Dragon Ball Daima: Episode 8 - Official Discussion Thread
Reading some of the takes in these threads, I'm left with one question:
What exactly are people expecting from a new series, if not to expand on the lore and world-building of previous series?
It feels like 2015 all over again when there were complaints about Beerus removing "agency" from Freeza, lol!

Akira Toriyama, DBS vol.4 joint interview with ToyotaroAt his core Zamasu is good like Shin, though I guess you could say he was so fastidious that it backfired. But you know, for this "Future Trunks Arc" you had to depict Zamasu and Trunks' inner conflict, right? If this was back when I was drawing the manga myself then I doubt if I could have done it. I mean, I'm not very good at depicting the characters' psychology on the page. So this all came together because now I only have to think up the story. [...] On my own, I doubt I would have been able to express Zamasu's fall to the dark side.
Re: Dragon Ball Daima: Episode 8 - Official Discussion Thread
Is it safe to say by now Arinsu and her brother are Toriyama's official versions of Mira and Towa?
How do people feel about having them instead of M&T? are they more intriguing? is it better for them to be related to Shin rather than Dabura?
If we are having a re-writing of videogames characters, who are the characters that might appear soon? Mechikabura? Fuu?

Re: Dragon Ball Daima: Episode 8 - Official Discussion Thread
Excellent episode. The animation of the fight was stupendous.
The new lore doesn't bother me. The natural calamity since "forever", absorbing the evil of mankind was just more entertaining to me.
I have high expectations for this Shin Boo.
I can't wait for the Second Makai Planet. I hope we visit the Glinds, what's left of them and that the whole crew gets together.
Interesting how the story has pushed Arinsu as the major threat while Gomah became secondary.
The Vegeta joke.

Re: Dragon Ball Daima: Episode 8 - Official Discussion Thread
A fantastic fight.
I liked the choreography of the first half, the Bo staff just didn't get much creative use in battle during the original series. Only the Dead Zone movie really showed off its potential.
I wish there was a bit more creativity in the 2nd half. It was well animated, but it was primarily just Goku overpowering at that point and ki blast spamming. Not that he can't do that, but he's known for being really clever with his usage of it most of the time.
And we reincorporate that scene from the first episode here. Goku fires a big Kamehameha, the enemy deflects it, and Goku immediately follows the beam with a strong hit. I'm sure that was just a bit of fun, rather than anything important.
---
I like the shot of the villagers just traveling with the heroes after Goku won the Dragon Ball. It's a celebration for sure, but it was a bit weird to see characters who looked like the ones that jumped them at the bar...just casually, happily following along.
Soooo...we know what Arinsu's plan is. We get another reminder of how "strong" Gomah is...there's that, but she wants to be the new Demon King by usurping him. She's set up a situation for where she may easily obtain said goal
I'm not really sure if I care for her just being there the whole time during the Boo arc, I personally thought it would be better...just based on what we saw if she simply got what she did from the newly de-aged Boo, but it doesn't really matter. Episode 1 did mention that she used Warp-Sama to get to Earth at some point, so this is just explaining that bit.
This part isn't quite related to Daima totally, but when I saw what her plan was...it reminded me of something that's been at the back of my mind for a while. They've brought back Freeza, they've brought back "a" Cell, are they going to do the same for Boo? I always thought it would be weird if they didn't do this...because it's such an obvious exclusion that breaks the pattern. Now I'm thinking Daima is the chance to bring back a Majin Boo who's also a villain again.
It makes sense, for Freeza it was "just" Freeza.
For Cell, it was just another biological creature made in the form of...2nd form Cell.
For Boo, it could be anything. Maybe it's a chance to make Fat Boo the villain (1st form) or it could be an...Android 21 situation but with Arinsu. Or this could be her Mira from Xenoverse.
With that out of the way, so...Boo has gone back to being created by someone instead existing since the beginning of time. Since that information never made its way into the series, this is whatever. They could go further into this later, right now it only serves to prop up Arinsu's friend/assistant here. It's fine.

+The Tamagami fight was fun.
+The Arinsu | Towa parallels continue. Will the new Majin look like Mira or Buu or a combo of both?
-Vegeta not coming back with his "prince of all saiyans" line after Hibus' line about how he'll ignore Vegeta who talks like a king, but isn't. Maybe revealing who he is wouldn't make a difference.

Re: Dragon Ball Daima: Episode 8 - Official Discussion Thread
Great fight. I find it amusing that they changed the origin of Buu a third time. First, Bididi created him. Then, Toriyama claimed Buu had actually existed since the beginning of time. And now, Daima states it was some old witch who created him. I would say this is my least favorite origin story. I would have preferred her being Bibidi's sister or something.
I don't think who they're related to really makes much of a difference. They had no similarities to Dabura anyways. And I don't really care for them to adapt other video game characters, tbh. The Tamagami, Gomah, Arinsu, the majins, and possibly Glorio are enough bad guys to play with.
Expanding lore isn't an issue, and is welcomed. It's just the pace has been pretty slow and this Tamagami episode could have occurred 2-4 episodes ago. I'm enjoying it. There's just fear that when it gets to the really good part, everything will be rushed since it's a limited series.SupremeKai25 wrote: Fri Nov 29, 2024 3:47 pm What exactly are people expecting from a new series, if not to expand on the lore and world-building of previous series?
Very similar in appearance and roles, but until Glorio is declared an android, I won't call him a version of Mira just yet.Koitsukai wrote: Fri Nov 29, 2024 4:07 pm Is it safe to say by now Arinsu and her brother are Toriyama's official versions of Mira and Towa?

-Amazing well choreographed fight(until the ki blast)
Hope for more like it.
- Hated they needed to play a guess the cup game to get the dragon ball, felt childish and unnecessary, though i did like that shin wasnt able to keep up, more fuel for the shin vs base saiyans debates lol
- So buu existence/creation "existed since time immemorial" retcon has been retcon back and retconned again lol

Re: Dragon Ball Daima: Episode 8 - Official Discussion Thread
So... really liked the episode. It was exciting seeing SS2 again! And even though the Tamagami yielded in the end, he was no worse for wear afterwards. As Goku said, he could easily keep fighting if he wished - and he WAS strong enough to deflect a full power kamehameha from Goku in SS2! So we know they ARE stronger than Dabura!
As for Buu... it doesn't bother me. I see people complaining it takes agency from Bibidi, but... it was still his idea! HE asked for the witch to create a powerful majin, he made the initiative for all that to happen. Even if he wasn't the de facto creator of Buu, it was still his plot and actions that drove his creation - he just had help in that matter.

Another banger, as usual and as expected from Daima. Recontextualizing old lore has been Toriyama's MO since the original series and it's awesome to see it being done as interestingly as ever in mainline DB.
Also, more weekly belly laughs from my end. Loved Vegeta's scene. Loved the Tamagami's shell game, or hell, the Tamagami's personality in general. Loved every bit of the character interactions, as always.
Also also, I'm glad that this fight, just like everything else in the show so far, did not overstay its welcome. To see that signature flow of the original manga running this strong in a serialized animated format like this from the start until now is great.
Just immaculate stuff all around.

To be fair that was much more agrigious. We saw Freeza's fear of the legend building and all his actions seemed rationale. Then in minus he's like oh yeah I'm scared of SSG too now, then it was like nuh none of that mattered I did it all under beerus instruction.SupremeKai25 wrote: Fri Nov 29, 2024 3:47 pm Reading some of the takes in these threads, I'm left with one question:

What a fucking episode! 10/10
Probably the first one that is solid from the beginning to the end. After the last 2 boring episodes and the lame and slow Goku vs Glorio fight , I really needed an episode like this to pump me up again. If there are episodes than can save a show its these ones.
Goku vs Tamagami surpassed my expectations. Not only in the animation departement but also character interactions. I liked there was still a secret cup challlenge too.
Shida, holy shit!! He just did one of the best Kamehamehas of the franchise. And that's saying a lot, because we had so many. His cuts in the last years haven't been doing much for me, but this oh boy I'm shook! Animation wise there's not really much more that can compete with what this monster just did.
I wouldn't mind if the fight lasted the entire episode, but I still like what they did. First part we get the first major fight of Daima with great animation and in the second part we move the plot forward with interesting events.
Arinsu is one of most interesting female characters Toriyama did for DB. Its such a breath of fresh air to have a female villain in a DB main show. She's feels like Daima Towa.
I will always miss you, Akira Toriyama. What a king! And congratulations to the staff! Best episode so far. I really needed this dopamine rush!

Beerus approved of planet Vegeta's destruction. He didn't tell Freeza to do it. There's no contradiction in Freeza's motivation either.nato25 wrote: Fri Nov 29, 2024 6:00 pmTo be fair that was much more agrigious. THIS IS CLASSIC GOKU! THIS IS Z GOKU!
Amazing fight. Half episode but we had everything that we needed.
I only miss Vegeta and Piccolo fighting.
And we'll have 2 bosses.
Gomah (we don't know much).
Dra Arinsu (they will create Majin Duu and Majin Kuu).
We need MORE DAIMA. 20 Episodes isn't enough!
It's amazing. Way too good.
Panzy with that hair is so cute

The fight was really good. The fights still feels like dragon ball and that is EVERYTHING for me. I mean, I could continue to watch Daima out of morbiness, but I prefer to watch it because it is satisfying, and I always found DBZ and DBGT fights to be very satisfying in terms of pacing, action and music. And now with Daima Episode 8, it was. Fights have always been satisfying...so far. Plus quality animation. It looks cool and fresh and new, as Dragon Ball deserved it all along.
The "new lore" you are discussing uh?... I am... ok with it. It feels very medieval and D&D, which is not dragon ball OG but I guess the magic part was indeed within the Majib Buu saga. Sci Fi is my preferred genre, but fantasy is ok... I hope Daima has future sagas that take place in space.
Some random comments:
I believe the witch could be Babidi's mother. And it sounds as if they will create another Majin Buu (a cloned one?)
Could it be a female Majin Buu?
...Girl...power? Yay...?
Vegeta and Bulma seem to have the personality they had in Dragon Ball Super. Just saiyan...
Where are Gohan and Videl!!!!???

Could this suggest that Janemba might be reintroduced into the series? Now that we know about Marba, I can imagine a scenario where she has already created him and is keeping him locked away underground in the Demon Realm, much like the Kraken or a Tailed Beast. She did mention that Buu was uncontrollable, could also suggest that she run over this experiments over and over until she created someone much worse.
This would be a major game-changer for Dragon Ball, as Marba is essentially the Demon World's version of Dr. Gero, making Arinsu look like an amateur by comparison!

I guess...a Janemba could also be a possibility. Naturally the context would be different than Boo, but it is a Boo variant.
An interesting Boo variant that doubles as an interesting movie villain.

I'm glad Toriyama's seemingly walking back the whole "Buu's just kinda existed since the beginning of the universe and Bibidi came across him" thing, I never really liked that

I'm loving the development of Dr. Arinsu as a villain here. The fight b/w Goku and Tamagami 3 had good choreography, Animation and art as expected. Goku's full powered Kamehameha in SS2 looked amazing

So the Tamagami are at least on Perfect Cell's level, if a pre Majin-ized Dabura was not able to defeat them. That fits with Goku using SSJ2 to defeat the 3rd Tamagami, since it was iffy whether his SSJ form was a match for Cell by the Boo arc.
Now that Majin Boo's origins have been clarified...once again, I wonder if Boo may have been created to defeat the Tamagami? He's a SSJ3-tier fighter afterall, with a bunch of helpful abilities that could even the playing field against a stronger opponent. Perhaps this demon witch made Boo for this purpose but lost control of Boo not long after he was created, and Bibidi then took the opportunity to steal Boo away with sealing magic to go eliminate the strong Glinds that resided in the universe?
I'm a little mixed by how all his new lore doesn't mesh well with everything that had been introduced since BOG in 2013, but I'm certainly happy that we have more DB.
