THREAD/DISCUSSION INFORMATION
Q: What is this thread?
A: This is the singular/dedicated discussion thread for Dragon Ball Daima episode 9. All content regarding this specific episode would be great to include here in this thread, rather than a dedicated / larger / all-encompassing ongoing thread. Posts that are specific to this individual episode in another thread with no relevance to the larger series or discussion taking place there will be reported and/or removed.
Q: When will this thread open?
A: This thread will be opened by a Kanzenshuu moderator when the episode is available to watch, through official channels, in its entirety.
Q: What is the history behind a [blank]-specific discussion thread?
A: We established episode-specific discussion threads beginning with Dragon Ball Kai in 2009, followed by the Dragon Ball Super television series in 2015. These episode-specific threads allowed people to discuss just that: those specific episodes, without being interrupted by other discussions regarding general production, promotion, etc. This is in contrast to, for example, other things on our website like our podcast reviews, which generally tackle story arcs as complete wholes.
Q: OK, but... so what's the point?
A: At Kanzenshuu we believe in history and preservation. It is worthwhile to future versions of ourselves and entirely new future fans to be able to dig back and find real-time reactions to specific productions (such as a specific episode or chapter). It's much easier to do this when the discussions are separated into these unique threads.
Q: When will new threads be created?
A: Threads for new/upcoming episodes will be created by a Kanzenshuu administrator at an appropriate point in time. Please do not attempt to create episode discussion threads of your own.
Q: What kinds of "sources" can we discuss?
A: You can discuss whatever you want, so long as it lives up to the community guidelines. It is recommended that you link to / discuss actual sources of information, rather than second-hand accounts. Random Twitter users are not "sources" of information. Shueisha has its own official Dragon Ball website and weekly news broadcast on YouTube, and then there is of course Dragon Ball Daima's own official website, which will in all likelihood be your actual primary sources of information leading up to an episode’s release.
Q: What if I have something to say about another episode that's not this episode?
A: Is what you have to say/ask/post even tangentially related to this episode? That's fine. Does it have absolutely nothing to do with this episode? Post it elsewhere. These episode-specific threads do not automatically close after a new episode comes out; you are free to keep discussing a specific episode for as long as you all feel like talking about it.
Q: How does this relate to [insert example here]? Why isn't [insert example here] lining up with [insert example here] from [insert example here]?
A: We don't know! We're all learning along the way! Maybe everything counts! Maybe nothing counts! Maybe only certain things count!

Never seen Vegeta and Piccolo fight a bit together, at least I can't remember that ever happening. Pretty cool.
The Majin at the end makes things interesting. Goku has his work cut out for him.

Re: Dragon Ball Daima: Episode 9 - Official Discussion Thread
I'm sorry, everyone. But Daima just nosedived and crashed HARD in my judgment this episode.
Good:
- The Snappy Jazz music reminds me of... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=11qvVwAuGU4
- That's unfortunately the only compliment I have.
Bad:
- Ew, no, no, no. Daima, stop while you're at it! SHE'S A CHILD!!!
- Oh hey, Goku's stupidity brought more stupid avoidable conflicts! I love to see it!
- That would've been a GREAT MOMENT for Goku to just... You know... teleport. On top of that, the show is stretching incredulity by trying to make me believe Goku can't keep up with two random furries, when the franchise has thoroughly established that furry characters are weakling jokes who only exist to get beaten and humiliated.
- "Your friends have arrived in the Demon Realm. We'll be meeting with your friends at Warp-sama and-" T-E-L-E-P-O-R-T!
- Let me guess, that living eye is a spy-thing and- Oh, yeah, it is. Plot moved by character stupidity, I love to see it.
- Flashbacks, flashbacks, flashbacks, more repeat of information we already knew.
- Oh hey, the gang reunited and... They split up again and have accomplished absolutely nothing.
- Goku has all but forgotten about rescuing Dende and is now solely interested in fighting the Tamagamis. I don't ever want to hear the "I'm no hero of Justice, but I care about my friends deeply" speech ever again.
- "And this witch was there, and she made the Saibamen and-" ... (inhales deeply) Stop.
- Majin SaibaPaikuhankoo... I have no words.

Re: Dragon Ball Daima: Episode 9 - Official Discussion Thread
I'll be honest I haven't really bought into the whole 'pacing issue' that everyone loves to bring up but this was the first time I felt bored watching Daima.
There were some good laughs at the beginning with the bear hat and Goku falling asleep, but any enemies we're just so not a threat all episode that it did feel pointless. The setting for Vegeta's fight was cool but did we need to see him dominate the same common thugs twice? I felt all the interactions with that party were so boring as well. The main crew meets up with them just to say figure your own way out... why? Didn't they get told to meet there to pick them up?
And the design of Majin Kuu was very underwhelming to me, I don't like his colours, I don't like his face, he kind of looks like a mini Hit with Majin pants and Popo lips. I'd go as far to say this design just sucks. Now it's difficult for me to get excited about anyone fighting this guy.
Did we really need to reference Saibaimen as well? That just seems like such an unnecessary complication. We didn't even need a base for the new Majin let alone the fact it could have been anything and no one would have raised an eye. I'm pretty downn on this episode as a whole will be interesting to see other takes. Easily worst episode for me.

Re: Dragon Ball Daima: Episode 9 - Official Discussion Thread
Fun little cooldown episode after last week's greatness. The pacing is back to a methodical level, but the episode had a lot of fun moments so it balances out. The rendezvous with Vegeta's party wasn't too long of a delay, seeing as they got their ship stolen, they beat up the thieves, and presumably got it back. The only thing I didn't like about this episode is that Saibamen are retconned to be Marba's creation as well, saying she sold a lot of them outside the Demon Realm (most likely to Freeza's soldiers), taking one of the sci-fi elements I liked about the Saiyan Arc and turning it into another Demon Realm retcon. I'm also not too thrilled about our new Majin's design, but I guess it makes sense to make it look like a Buu/Saibaman hybrid, except the big lips look stupid, and he has a dick head rather than a cabbage head that Saibamen usually have. Hell, this Bojack Horseman-looking motherfucker has a better design than Majin Kuu does.

Re: Dragon Ball Daima: Episode 9 - Official Discussion Thread
After last week's super huge episode, this one was a bit more of a breather by comparison to briefly show Vegeta and co. and what they were doing.
I quite like how Panzy has really stepped up, and it was natural that Bulma and here would get along given their very brief meeting.
Majin Kuu being composed of the now demonic Saibamen is interesting. We'll have to see how that one goes.

Re: Dragon Ball Daima: Episode 9 - Official Discussion Thread
Might be my least favorite episode. Specially since they just repeated the beats Goku and others had, replacing them with Bulma and others.
At least there was progress at the end.
Some notes:
-Majin Kuu and Saibaiman. That's not something I was expecting.
-Hybis is for sure carrying the Demon Eye. Such a Toriyama choice.
-Vegeta fighting in the nightclub. Amazing.
-Could they make more than one Majin Boo/Kuu?

Re: Dragon Ball Daima: Episode 9 - Official Discussion Thread
That must have been the most pointless episode yet. Nothing egregious and it was still fun, but that second half felt so incredibly unnecesary.
Anyways now that one of them has finally been revealed: I despise the new Majin designs. I have no idea what Toriyama was aiming at with them. They pick up the most barebones elements of Saibaman and Buu, and mix them up together in something that somehow manages to feel more generic than either of them. Cell Max was also a derivate design that was based on the least appealing of Cell forms, but it still managed to feel unique because of the purpousedly plastic looking colors-we even got to see ot being colored in the film so it made sense. So I don't hate them to be Buu knockoffs, I hate them because they have nothing unique going on their design and feel less special than random demon enemies. Now, I do think Kuu is the worst of the two, but that doesn't really change things.
Of course they could be a huge red herring and turn out to be total pushovers, but it's still jarring I find the freaking Tamagami to have more interesting designs than them. I never felt this way with Toriyama Super's designs, with Toyotaro's, or even with most of the random fighters from the ToP. I even find the yellow thief from this episode to have a more amusing design!
I also wonder who had the idea of bringing Saibaman into the mix. That really only creates more questions and it's telling than even with how exposition heavy Daima is, they didn’t waste more time with it because really there is nothing you can do to reconcile them being from the Demon Realm with being created by scientists. It's a huge retcon but it doesn't really bother me personally and it's another issue. I just hate these designs with a passion for some reason. I hopw this at least leads to interesting story developments, it would kind of fun of the cast neve gets to fight Tamagami 1, or even something funny like Kuu defeating him but failing at the following minigame.

Worst episode so far, by far. Boring and pointless for 20 minutes, but yay, we got a new majin in the end. I'm not even going to itemize my thoughts.

Re: Dragon Ball Daima: Episode 9 - Official Discussion Thread
I remember people mocking Majin Kuu's appearance by claiming he looked like a saibaman rip-off. I found it so funny that it turned out he was created from a saibaman seed, so the design was not a coincidence.
That aside, I think we can all finally agree that the pacing of this show is god-awful. The episode could have literally started with this new Majin being created, and him fighting the Tamagami. Instead, we have this generic thief story, and judging by the preview, the next episode will be more unnecessary bullshit.

"Dragon Ball once became a thing of the past to me, but after that, I got angry about the live action movie, re-wrote an entire movie script, and now I'm complaining about the quality of the new TV anime. It seems Dragon Ball has grown on me so much that I can't leave it alone." - Akira Toriyama on Dragon Ball Super
Re: Dragon Ball Daima: Episode 9 - Official Discussion Thread
The only thing I enjoyed in this episode was Vegeta's fight scenes in the second half of this episode and that moment Piccolo had. Hybis's 3rd eye has my curiosity and I like the fact that Kuu is intelligent enough to follow Dr Arsinu's orders
Re: Dragon Ball Daima: Episode 9 - Official Discussion Thread
That Majin Kuu design...Jesus....it looks like a bad fanfiction character. With all the GT comparisons, at least GT villains and had way better designs.
Re: Dragon Ball Daima: Episode 9 - Official Discussion Thread
I really liked Goku's hat. Loved that Goku and his crew didn't have space for Vegeta & co. Vegeta in the bar was really funny. Cool angles during Vegeta's fight. Hibis is still as fun. Very intrigued by Majin Kuu and that the base as Saibaman. And even more surprised that he's after the tamagami. Also really funny scene with Gowasu and Goma. A great episode in its on sense. Why can't people just sit down and enjoy? Stop being critical and just enjoy and you'll feel better.

Re: Dragon Ball Daima: Episode 9 - Official Discussion Thread
That's not the main villain, is it? That would be one more thing GT and Daima have in common: ugly and forgettable main villains, lol!
Akira Toriyama, DBS vol.4 joint interview with ToyotaroAt his core Zamasu is good like Shin, though I guess you could say he was so fastidious that it backfired. But you know, for this "Future Trunks Arc" you had to depict Zamasu and Trunks' inner conflict, right? If this was back when I was drawing the manga myself then I doubt if I could have done it. I mean, I'm not very good at depicting the characters' psychology on the page. So this all came together because now I only have to think up the story. [...] On my own, I doubt I would have been able to express Zamasu's fall to the dark side.
Re: Dragon Ball Daima: Episode 9 - Official Discussion Thread
Lol because the episode wasn't enjoyable. That's not Gowasu by the way that is the universe 11 old supreme kai, this is Degesu.sangofe wrote: Fri Dec 06, 2024 3:39 pm I really liked Goku's hat. Even Hybis humour felt a bit flat for me, least funny he's been for me.

I'm not sure if Majin Kuu is the response to GT's Baby, but Baby sure had a better introduction and initial design than this.

As long as there's some progression...plot-wise.
Since not much really happens in the first part, I'm glad that...they didn't try to ring out any conflict of the Dragon Ball actually getting stolen, maybe that can happen later and...not immediately after they got it. Goku kept true to his word, so that's nice.
When the characters all met up...I thought that was going to be when the cast comes together, but I was confused due to the fact they didn't really set this up properly. We get told they were gonna get picked up...but group A gets there and then just leave. They tell them Panzy's dad will get another ship, but then the guys who stole it just tell them where it is. That was pointless.
I feel like they should've cut out the fight, either one in favor of a humorous quick-cut. Having Vegeta fight the same mooks 2 times in a row wasn't necessary. I like the idea that they're just going through the same thing as Goku's group...but they didn't really pull it off.
Saibaimen come from the Demon Realm too apparently...ok.
This new Majin design...well I hope being made from the Saibaman seed at least has it make use of the rarely seen Acid ability.
Cultivation.
---
Also Werewolf. When Glorio called that guy a werewolf...I wasn't expecting someone who could just turn at will, so that was cool.

Re: Dragon Ball Daima: Episode 9 - Official Discussion Thread
Pretty useless episode as far as the A plot goes. There are some more side developments in the background with the villains and the eye but it really feels like an anime stretching for time over the source material even though none exists.
The Goku team and Vegeta team get together but not really. What was the point? Well, there is Majin Kuu now who, much like Hit, looks like a DBO Namekian. I wonder if he will explode in the same way they did.

+Pink bear hat was cute.
+light chuckle at Goku immediately thinking Panzy was talking about underpants and her correcting him.
+Goku's mild irritation with the two thieves after they jump off the cliff gave me a laugh. He does this little warm up before chasing after and it's a very are we really doing this right now kind of body language.
+Goku trying to pull an all nighter and failing.
-Meeting up with the B Team only to turn around and leave without them felt so dumb. We couldn't have had the reunion either later or over the phone? I totally get Vegeta being upset.
-tying the saibaimen into this lore drop seems like a stretch for the seat of the pants way the manga was written.
+/-of course Hybis has the remaining macguffin.
+/-eliminating one of the remaining Tamagami fights by having the new Majin beat him.
