I have almost totally eliminated the probability of 4:3. When I play the orange bricks in hi def on my x box on my widescreen tv the black bars on the top and bottom are eliminated to fit the 1080 bill. So I am assuming the same goes with this. When I play them on my 4:3 television they are present. They are probably using some sort of hi def player on a hi def widescreen. Otherwise the image would look stretched and poor quality, which it doesn't.

I guess that confirms it.

An you can see more of his belt in the convention screencap.

Is it just me, or does that cap have less information on it than the TV?

The TV is definitely zoomed in less than the screencap. His left elbow makes it especially clear.

Just means they might be using different masters than they did before. Insert "OMG THEY GOT THE DRAGON BOXES" speculation.

That doesn't mean anything. The black bars disappearing on your widescreen television and showing up on your fullscreen television is what's supposed to happen because FUNi gave the episodes an anamorphic transfer. Nothing to do with HD.

I will laugh so hard if FUNi gets the DragonBox masters for GT. The tradition of best treatment for the worst series continues!

I agree that Son Wukong's comparison does seem to imply that the trailer is in 4:3 and I now believe that it is, but the only way to be sure is to either see it for ourselves or ask someone who did.

I think that we should contact the person who uploaded the video and saw the trailer for himself whether it was wide screen or not. I'm not asking anybody to do this, I'm just suggesting it as a possible way to end the confusion. I would ask him myself, but I don't have a YouTube account and am a little too lazy to do so. So, if anybody does want to sent this guy a quick message than here's his YouTube page: http://www.youtube.com/user/AlbertakaPitBull

Also, I'm pretty sure that we will get the original openings and endings in the GT boxes due to the fact that that's what we got in the DBZ boxes. Now that also leads me to wonder if they will use the instrumental version for the opening on the English track like they did for the DBZ sets. Either way it doesn't really matter as long as we don't get the horrible GT Rap that even Chris Sabat hates.

I think this is Funi's way of thanking us for sitting through the season 2 set.

Someone could e-mail Funimation and find out for sure?

As I said in the podcast topic, the only GT stuff I'm missing are the "Lost Episodes," which I can pick up easily on eBay along with the single release of DBZ Movie 2 (I'm trying to avoid double dipping at all costs).

Very interesting to see that there's even the slightest possibility of getting GT's new releases in 4:3. While it may not seem probable based on this new GT cover art, I'm hoping they just re-release those DB Saga sets, since I've already got sets 7-9.1. Eh, maybe I'll just resort to hunting down set 9.2 and then pick up the Madman box set of the other ones.

Seriously, right? Whenever I look at my shelf, I always have mixed feelings about almost having the entirety of GT, while only having bits and pieces of the other two series (facepalms)...

This is so stupid and inconsistent. If they are going to do wide-screen for DBZ, why on earth would you give GT full screen!? Just to be a pain in the ass!?

Just because of less zooming, it doesn't mean they have the dragonbox masters. They have the original film masters, so they could easily control the zooming. You can only see if it's dragonbox by the dirt, wich was cleaned by Toei. The colors and grain amount can by controlled by Funimation I think.

If the DBGT sets are released in 4:3 format, I wonder if the DB sets will be released like this as well? And the whole credit-less opening and endings worry me more. If the alternate angles aren't included, then we may only get the first ending because of the lack of credit-less versions for them. Or FUNi might play the other songs over the 'Hitori Jyanai' video. However, something needs to be done about the title cards if alternate angles are dropped. They are totally different from the Japanese ones. It would also be nice if FUNi did what they did with their first 2 DBGT DVDs and have an alternate angle with the Japanese credits translated.

If this is indeed 4:3, I have to wonder how far off a re-re-release of Z would be. Now I'm going to stop getting the sets until further information pops up.

That probably won't happen, but oh my god I want it to. I don't buy fullscreen versions of widescreen movies- and I can't bring myself to bring a widescreen version of a fullscreen show, especially with how intensely familiar I am with the source material. It would be constantly annoying the hell out of me.

FUNimation remastered DBZ with widescreen because of the film damage at the top and bottom of the screen, which can be dubbed "film glue" on the masters that they got. Since they probably couldnt remove it, they just decided they could crop it, and easily pass it as "more cinematic". As for GT, it's newer film and has less damage and, therfore, FUNimation could easily remaster GT the right way, in 4:3.

One thing people need to keep in mind though. Funimation said that Dragon Ball Z would be "consistent from beginning to end". They didn't say anything about what would be done with GT or the original series.

And wasn't Z only cropped because of damaged film? Funi probably never intended to make Z wide screen, only for that. And since the GT film is probably ok, it makes sense not to make it wide screen as well.
