Which was the better sequel: GT, Super, or Daima ?
Dragon Ball Daima just concluded its short run in Japan, which also (as of now) concludes Toriyama's journey with the franchise. Toriyama's original Dragon Ball story that concluded back in 1995 (or 1996 for the anime) now has three sequels: GT, Super, and now Daima. In your opinion, which sequel was a worthy successor to the original manga ? Please note that this has nothing to do with "canon", but rather what series did the best job continuing Toriyama's original work.
Re: Which was the better sequel: GT, Super, or Daima ?
The Super manga I think is generally a very competent story. So are 3 out of the 4 modern movies. Daima and GT are just very fundamentally flawed. The Super anime is a commercial.

This will probably be the main discussion for the next few years, lol.
What's the best sequel? The one you like best. There is no absolute answer.

Daima and Super are not sequels. They are midquels.
Now, if you call them "sequels", one expects them to continue the story of DBZ, yes?
WRONG. They are midquels. They aren't supposed to continue or end anything. They're supposed to flesh out what happened in a 10 years gap WITHIN the DBZ storyline.
A lot of the root complaints about DBS and Daima stem from not understanding the difference between a midquel and a sequel. Stuff like "why don't the characters ever change?", "why are there no definitive endings?"... because it's a MIDQUEL.

Akira Toriyama, DBS vol.4 joint interview with ToyotaroAt his core Zamasu is good like Shin, though I guess you could say he was so fastidious that it backfired. But you know, for this "Future Trunks Arc" you had to depict Zamasu and Trunks' inner conflict, right? If this was back when I was drawing the manga myself then I doubt if I could have done it. I mean, I'm not very good at depicting the characters' psychology on the page. So this all came together because now I only have to think up the story. [...] On my own, I doubt I would have been able to express Zamasu's fall to the dark side.

Give me Super any day of the week especially after Daima's head scratching ending

'Better' is just such an aimless discussion to have, I think. I could probably tell you at least a few things I enjoy about all three of them, but I could also turn around and tell you that I don't think either constitute as 'good television series' (or a manga, in the case of the manga adaption of Dragon Ball Super). Like, my 'answer' would be the Dragon Ball Super anime, but that just invites going into all of the myriad of issues that it has and why I don't think that it qualifies as a good television series in general.

Daima is the sequel from the Boo Saga.
DBS is the sequel from the Boo Saga.
GT is the sequel from EOZ.
I will have to say Daima and GT are the best sequel or midquel.
DBS anime doesn't feel like a sequel or midquel, it feels more like a reboot and parody.

Dragon Ball GT gave us the perfect ending to the Dragon Ball series after the classic franchise's 13-year run in 1997. Therefore, I think Dragon Ball GT is the better sequel.

Overall, I had way more fun with Super, so I'll go with that. But note that I'm particularly talking about the manga and movies.
Daima was really fun too. I liked the ending. But I feel like it played too much with our expectations for its own good.
GT was boring to sit through, so it's dead last for me. Some parts were good, but some parts made me feel like I was watching one of those poor DBZ movies from the 90s.
Super > Daima > GT

Out of all these, GT is the only one that can be called a sequel. Easy win

Re: Which was the better sequel: GT, Super, or Daima ?
There are just so many things at play when people talk about "better."
"Better" in what aspect, exactly?
Structurally, coherency, animation-wise, better fight scenes? Daima blows GT out of the water in that regard.
But I'd argue GT had the better story, characters and emotional weight, rambles about the execution of these aside.
And that's not even getting into the can of worms that is, "Does it qualify for Toriyama Charm™ and Real Dragon Ball Essence™?"
I really, really don't care about the pretty animation and the better choreographed fight scenes if the story and characters we got were extremely underwhelming, and I also couldn't care less about whether GT qualifies for the nebulous fan-made eligibility rate of Real Dragon Ball Essence™. So I will tend to say GT is better.
At the same time, someone who watches Dragon Ball purely for the spectacle, just to see well-animated characters beating the shit out of each other and couldn't care less about melodrama and character interplay (and hey, there's nothing wrong with that), will say Daima is better than GT, and Super is better than both. The Real Dragon Ball Essence™ will vary a lot in definition depending on who you ask.
Again: Just focus on what you like, Dragon Ball ain't that deep or good enough for us to care.

Re: Which was the better sequel: GT, Super, or Daima ?
I will go into more details later once I see Daima's last episode, but I think Daima is the better sequel to the Buu saga, while GT is the better sequel to Dragon Ball as a whole. The Buu saga's ending felt abrupt, which isn't an issue now that Daima is a thing. The original manga and Z's ending was honestly too open ended for my liking, something that GT more than made up for. Super honestly just didn't work for me, as the writing and production quality was all over the place, and more often than not it didn't feel like it knew what to do with itself. I understand why it's liked by many fans around the world, but for me personally, its flaws unfortunately outweigh its positives.

It will give us something to talk about while we wait for god knows how long for them to put out the next animated project.Jord wrote: Fri Feb 28, 2025 11:21 am This will probably be the main discussion for the next few years, lol.

I would agree if you if GT's story was as good as Dragon Ball's. As it stands, they're all flawed sequels with mixed ideas.AliTheZombie13 wrote: Fri Feb 28, 2025 12:11 pmStructurally, coherency, animation-wise, better fight scenes? Daima blows GT out of the water in that regard.

The only real sequel is GT because it takes after the last DBZ episode.
But Dragon Ball Super is the best of the three by far, which is saying a lot considering its the only one with production problems.

A world without Dragon Ball is just boring.

Re: Which was the better sequel: GT, Super, or Daima ?
For me, Daima was the best. The animation was incredible, the world-building was fresh and immersive, and you could really feel Toriyama’s touch throughout. It captured that classic Dragon Ball sense of adventure, mystery, and fun that made the original series so special. I went into it not knowing what to expect, but I ended up enjoying it way more than I anticipated.
GT and Super both had great moments. GT had a strong ending, and Super expanded the universe in cool ways, but Daima just felt the most like a natural continuation of Toriyama’s original storytelling. It balanced action, humor, and exploration in a way that really clicked with me.

This is something Daima succeeded at spectacularly, while GT and Super mostly failed at. GT's attempt to balance action and adventure never worked, while Super's attempt at humor is offensive to put it nicely.Hugo Boss wrote: Fri Feb 28, 2025 2:59 pmFor me, Daima was the best. Super was better than GT, which was better than Heroes, which was better than the utter garbage that is Daima.

To be honest, the baseball episode and the one where Vegeta tries to cook an egg were among the funniest moments I've ever seen in Dragon BallVegeta th3 4th wrote: Fri Feb 28, 2025 3:13 pmSuper's attempt at humor is offensive to put it nicely
