How would you have made GT ?
Dragon Ball GT is a flawed and divisive series, but despite that, it still has a place in my heart. If you were in a position of power back in the 90s, how would you have made GT ? There are some guidelines you have to stick with:
1- It has to be set after Z, as that was Toriyama's wish.
2- It can't be more than 64 episodes + one special long.
3- The core arcs remain the same (Baby, Super #17, & Shadow Dragons).

Re: How would you have made GT ?
Follow up on what the Boo arc teased but failed to go through with “the next generation of warriors” replace Trunks with Oob as the third person on the voyage across the universe to find the black star dragon. Expand Pan’s role so she actually becomes Super Saiyan at some point.
Actually nerf the fuck out of Goku so being a kid again reduces him to his post-Super God Water but pre-training in the Heavenly Realm with God and Popo level of power. He’s also lost the ability to become Super Saiyan. He’s still striving to become stronger but is forced to act more of a mentor to the stronger but less experienced fighters.
Give Super Saiyan 4 to Gohan who goes through a similar arc in Super of realizing he cant give up martial arts and keep his family safe.
Reveal Bra is actually as strong as is expected of a half human/Saiyan hybrid and give her and Pan a fusion “Pura”
Split the 7 Shadow Dragons so Goku, Videl, Vegeta, Pan, Goten, Gohan, 18, Bra, Oob and Trunks all get to fight them.

Re: How would you have made GT ?
I like GT. I think it's better than Super and especially Daima, but...
Dragon Ball hunt stays the same. I like this adventurous style. The OG trio is the best.
Trunks and Goten fuse to fight Oozaru Baby, they are putting the good fight but Baby somehow cheats and wins.
Super #17's arc has more machine-mutants so others can have a good fights.
The GT Fighters are split to fight different Shenlongs. The teams are: Trunks and Vegeta, Goten and Gohan, Goku and Oob, Pan and Bra, Yamcha with Kuririn and Tenshinhan are helping people in crisis. The #17 is back and he's fighting the Shenlongs with his sister to repent his sins from previous arc.

"If it means having to live under your control, I'd rather be dead!" - Trunks to Baby

Re: How would you have made GT ?
Goku gets weaker as a child rater than have his power be the same
Have Uub, Pan and Goku go into space. Maybe have Pilaf be drag into the mix as it is his fault for why this is happening. Goku having to
Fix the plot holes with the Black Star Dragon Balls
Keep the Baby saga mostly the same
Have Buu and Uub know each other before fusing.
Get rid of Super 17 and give us a new original character that both Gero & Myuu created.
Bad guys come back, but they are not killed off so easily. Give the characters a bit of a challenge to fight old foes
Cell and Freeza aren't treated as a joke
Piccolo never dies and becomes a plot device in the next arc
Dr. Myuu is killed off instead, and not Gero. Gero is the OG mad scientist and Myuu turning against him was so dumb to me
The Shadow Dragons are fought one by one with different characters
Gohan also goes Super Saiyan 4
Have one more story arc after the Shadow Dragons and before Heroes Legacy.

Re: How would you have made GT ?
I don't remember the plot of Dragon Ball GT too well because I haven't watched it in, like, twenty years? Anyway, I made a bunch of shit up to put together my version of the Hunt for the Black-Star Dragon Balls arc (twelve episodes).
Spoiler:
Re: How would you have made GT ?
Just minor tweaks like:
- Goku actually gets weaker and not just in relation to himself. Weaker compared to others and stops being the winning card. He did get weaker, but was so OP that even his child base form was still above his children as SS and fighting together. Pointless, really.
- I'm really fond of the Team, so I wouldn't want to change it, even though I like Uub and he should've gotten more screen. I feel having Uub as the fail-safe on Earth works ok, too bad he entered the arena on Planet Tsufuru, on the second half of the second leg!
- Redjic comes back. I never understood why he was just a one-episode friend. He sure was no weakling. He could've come back to help Goku vs Ruudo or vs Rildo. I don't even remember if he helped with the Universal Genki Dama.
- Pan unlocks SS or a potential unleashed form like her father. Or both. SS on M2, and Ultimate vs Vegeta Baby on Tsufuru-sei.
- Bra comes back to help Vegeta when Goten joins to help Gohan. Bra vs Goten would definitely be a cool fight.
- Uub is there to welcome Goku back, and they all fight Gohan, Goten, and when they succeed, Vegeta Baby and his children arrive and end the whole thing. Every hybrid vs Uub.
Uub is left for dead, he gets sent flying or something, and Kibitoshin saves Goku from certain death.
- The Super 17 arc brings back Baby but as a parasite. After the earthlings were cleansed, he no longer can inhabit them, so he must fight with his own powers. Vegeta takes revenge. Nappa's reunion with Vegeta is more than just "bye".
Raditz could fight Bra who is also a key part of the resistance.
- Goku doesn't suffer brain damage and Alzheimer's at the same time as he is fighting Super 17. He has the advantage throughout the fight but can't finish him off because the dude absorbs his ki blasts, and slowly the fight goes the android's way.
- 18 isn't so abusive to Krilin, please. Why was that even a thing?
- Pan isn't so abusive to Giru. Impossible to care for a character that bullies her Tamagotchi.
- Shadow Dragons arc. Some dragons are less passive and go after our boys, to make sure is not just Goku taking care of every single villain. Vegeta and Bra could hold Capsule corp. Gohan and Goten go help some rural areas. Majuub other parts of the globe. Vegeta too, with the aid of Bulma so he can turn SS4. And the original trio of astronauts lead the quest.
One or two silly dragons are ok, but 4 is too much, that's more than half.
-Uncertain about giving Goku his adult body back for the final arc. The excuse could be the negative energy released to the world.
-Uncertain about Piccolo dying. It was a big moment and it set precedent that people are dying for good, now. However, the excuse was flimsy.

Re: How would you have made GT ?
Goku isn't turned into a kid. Oob is more central to the story, has a personality more resembling Goku (goofy kid whose love of fighting charms even deadly enemies), and is also brought into space to help retrieve the Dragon Balls; his training is not done yet. Pan becomes a Super Saiyan while out in space. Since I am not a coward, Vegeta's initial character design is never "fixed". Bra's can be, though.
There is no new set of Dragon Balls whose existence is extremely cumbersome to justify. Instead, the normal regular Dragon Balls fly off into space and leave delayed destructive energy behind, which Dende surmises to be a natural, but unintended, side-effect of having been upgraded so many times. Bulma detects this energy, realizes what it will do and when, and discerns that the particular radiation from the Dragon Balls (that allow them to be detectable by her radar) will neutralize this energy. Hence the Grand Touring that happens.
I would more fully merge the Super 17 and Evil Dragons arcs. Turns out, the Dragon Balls are eggs. They have incubated enough wish energy that Star Dragons hatch from them; these actually look like dragons. Having been tainted by humanity's evil (as God once was), the Star Dragons are malicious. In a twisted inversion of the most common use of the Dragon Balls, the evil dead are returned to life as the Star Dragons' servants and soldiers. Instead of killing Nappa, Vegeta tries to make amends; maybe he succeeds and Nappa sticks around idk.
Despite being corrupted by humanity's evil, the Four Star Dragon still has the pride and honor of a warrior, due to incubating around the Son family for so long. He is further changed due to the rapport he develops while fighting Oob. He survives the arc, and is next in the revolving door of face-turn antagonists. He'll be a mainstay at Bulma's cookouts soon enough.
After at least one timeskip, Oob eventually defeats a greying Goku in a match, and graduates from Son University. Goku looks forward to fighting him again some day. The End.

Re: How would you have made GT ?
More important than anything else: it has to actually have good fighting choreography. There's probably about 3 minutes of good fight scene footage collectively in the whole show, and they're in more obscure fights like Goku vs Ledgic
Re: How would you have made GT ?
While I always want directors and animators to be given the creative freedom to create awesome battle scenes, I think the notion that that is somehow even more important than a plot and set of character arcs that are compelling to follow is rather overstated.Jack Bz wrote: Mon Apr 28, 2025 2:43 pm More important than anything else: it has to actually have good fighting choreography. Re: How would you have made GT ?
I think doing a seven year timeskip after the Baby arc and showing Gokuu regrow up alongside Pan would be an interesting idea.
Re: How would you have made GT ?
So... First off, I don't think it's necessary to make the Black Star Dragon Balls blow up the Earth. The fact that they're powerful enough to turn Goku into a kid against his will should be incentive enough for Goku and co. to go get them, to keep them out of any would-be supervillain's hands. That way you don't have the "but Earth will blow up though" thought that sours the mood during the wacky space adventures or whatever.
I had a little (big) think about Baby a couple of weeks ago and came up with a bit of an alternate take. I guess I can put that here. Warning, long.
I shouldn't have typed all that up in the middle of the night, I probably made some mistakes or skipped something. Anyway, I didn't really extend the thought process into how the Super 17 and evil dragon stuff would go, but I think it'd probably end up being "AF-friendly" in some way. Pikkon would be in Hell to help Goku rather than Piccolo, and more people would be involved in the evil dragon fights beyond Goku and Pan, I guess. Something like that.

Re: How would you have made GT ?
If we are bound to stick to the original story beats from the anime, let's do some mental gymnastics. I would do this the following way.
Black star saga:
As many other had said, let's not have the black star balls destroy the earth after one year. This is really just a superfluous plot point which exists only to add drama. And if we are going into a more lighhearted story with DB hunt and chibi Goku, let's make this through and through adventure and character piece, not saving the world deal.
As for who would go on the mission, I feel I would drop out Trunks (I like him but the main reason he is there is due to "adult Trunks is a famous character").
Now who would I replace him with. I have 3 picks.
1. Goten - a much needed character development for him and it would let him shine for once. Also his relationship with Pan could really be interesting. The only problem with this is losing the "stoic, intelligent" character from the trio, which I feel Goten could not fit.
2. Bulma - this would go back even more to original dragon ball hunts and we would have the "intelligent" character as well as Goku having to put up with two strong willed women. The drawback is that Bulma would not fight so we may lose much action from the saga.
3.Gohan - with Gohan we could have both action and his knowledge plus maybe an arc where Pan would have to proof her independence even more (in this version Pan IS NOT a damsel in distress but a capable but a little pampered fighter). Maybe even we could watch some dynamics in Gohan not wanting to let her daughter go trough a childhood hell like he went through only to realize Pan DOES like fighting and he has to let go a bit.
Other than that let's make the pacing of finding the Dragon Balls way way quicker. The Para Para brothers shouldn't steel the balls when our heroes hardly have any but rather when there is one to go.
And the most important, have writers that really really can emulate that legendary Toryiama charm.
This saga does not have much of drama or very memorable fights so it's strength has to be humor and character development.
I am okay with slow villain reveal, I even think it's kind of creative but once we meet Miu, the tone immediately goes to serious and suspenfull and stays like this until we return to Earth.
Baby saga:
Truthfully there's not much I would change
this one gets nearly everything done. Maybe only add Uub a significance and have him be more of Goku's comrade during the fight (as Uub IS supposed to be a big deal).
Also Goku should change back into an adult after this saga.
Super Android 17 saga:
Rather thank have Super Android 17 be the main big boss and everyone else is fodder, let's make it even even between him and returning villains from hell.
All of them would not be only a one screen Easter Egg (though I agree that one shooting old villains is sometimes immensely satysfaing) but a challenge to overcome for various characters.
Let's have 18 and Goku fight 17 but at the same time have Gohan vs Cell, Vegeta vs Frieza, Kuririn vs Nappa etc
Let's go one step further and bring King Piccolo back and have him to fight our Piccolo.
We even could make a battle royale style out of it.
The saga still would be short but the problems with opening hell, the black dragon Ball stuff all could tie in into a sort of corruption with the Dragon Balls which further leads to...
Shadow Dragon Saga
The idea behind this saga is great. However the execution is flawed so let's fix it with various characters taking action and hunting the dragons down. Gohan, Goten, Pan, Trunks, maybe even Kuririn, Vegeta and Goku all would take action.
Also what would be cool to me is make every dragon somehow thematically connected to it's wish. An ice dragon or a dragon who takes your energy are good ideas but they seem disconnected from the whishes from which they were created.
Only the 4 star dragon is thematically and poetically justified.
Omega Shenron would actually rise from the wish to make Piccolo young again and had much of king Piccolo in him which could further tie into Goku having to face someone resembling THE Dragon Ball villain he struggled so much against.

I would start by making Uub the badass successor of Goku instead of the little bitch boy who lost to Baby.

What about losing to Baby makes Uub a 'bitch', though? Why is Uub suddenly a woman and why is that bad?Peach wrote: Tue Apr 29, 2025 4:20 pm I would start by making Uub the badass successor of Goku instead of the little bitch boy who lost to Baby.

Oh, I'm aware. I'm just trying to be a little less confrontational about the pretty embarrassing use of the word 'bitch'—equating 'weak' and 'failed' men with 'women'—so as to see if I can just get people to think about how they equate all those things.Hellspawn28 wrote: Tue Apr 29, 2025 9:15 pm When someone calls a guy a bitch, that means they view them as weak. Re: How would you have made GT ?
My fantasy of Uub at the End of Z was he would be Goku's successor. I figured a seasoned Uub would be able to do everything Goku did and more. Instant transmission kamehameha, techniques up the wazoo. He would have human potential stacked on a being that took the whole universe to take down, which would make his ceiling unfathomable.
He's just a guy with the personality of a wet blanket who gets beaten like an insect. Even after combining with Buu, he's fodder to buy time for Goku to step in and beat Baby. And he never really has any meaningful growth after that. It should have been the other way around with Goku, even as Super Saiyan 4, buying time for Uub to undergo an intense merger with Buu. Or this badass pupil avenging his fallen master.

Re: How would you have made GT ?
I guess I would have Gotenks appear in GT that would be a start. Oob would know Goku techniques, which include the Kaioken and IT.
The Saiyan would gain new transformation, which they didn't have in DBZ. Bulma can use her Blutz Wave machine to transform all the Saiyan into their Oozaru form and then gain control to turn SSJ4, which includes Pan. in DBZ Goku was able to help Gohan gain control of his Oozaru form.
Make GT longer and give other characters the chance to shine. Have Goten and Trunks fight as inviduals and fuse if they need to. Have Pan achieve SSJ forms, she should have a lot of potential seeing her parents are both smart and strong.

Re: How would you have made GT ?
When I first read the title, I thought that GT was so much of a mess that I wouldn't know where to begin. But after thinking about it, I think I do know where to begin....
Since we're keeping the same arcs and the same or similar premise to the arcs, I'd just change some of the major plot points to make it seem like it's a different arc. Since two of the GT arcs heavily involve something going wrong with dragon balls and since the black star arc and Baby arcs are connected, I would have merged all of the arcs in GT into one giant arc instead. Instead of black star dragon balls, I'd have the Earth dragon balls get sabotaged by Baby; who will be the main antagonist of GT. Maybe he secretly possesses Dende and has him change the way the dragon balls function. The wish that turns Goku into a kid can still be made the same way it does in the show by Pilaf, but Shenron then announces (to everyone's shock) that they will have 1 year before the Earth explodes unless they can gather them all again and bring them back to Earth.
I don't know what their adventures in space will be like, but let's say that Bulma makes a new and more powerful dragon radar that's installed inside a spaceship that finds the dragon balls which are now scattered so far apart. Goku, Vegeta, Pan, Trunks and Uub go out to look for them and while they're away, Baby slowly possesses everyone on the Earth and prepares it for when Goku and co return. Baby also blows up Namek before he ever goes to Earth, so the Namekian dragon balls aren't an option for help.
Baby's plan will be to gradually and secretly possess a lot of people so that when Goku and co return to Earth, he will use the energy of the people he possessed to create the Shadow Dragons which will be the enemies he plans to use to defeat the last of the Saiyans. Creating the Shadow Dragons will require the dragon balls to be gathered together again, but if they don't get brought back, then the Earth explodes anyway; so he still gets part of what he wanted. And Super 17 would just be some Baby-possessed version of 17, I guess.
