"Goku is scared of Raditz" dub comparisons

Post by SHINOBI-03 » Tue Apr 29, 2025 12:00 pm

I got this video by channel user The Anime Linguist recommended to me in my feed where he highlights Goku's "Wakuwaku" catchphrase and how it affected his confrontation with Raditz and compares the original Japanese version with FUNimation's dubs and the LATAM dub
https://youtu.be/vWE2WntZwy8?si=EcnYhvNqyrIyQer3

So this peaked my curiosity to see how other available international dubs around the world handled this scene and Goku's switch from "Wakuwaku" わくわく to "Gatagata" ガタガ. Share what you have and I'll add them to the list below

Image

-
- Piccolo: "Wakuwaku Surudaro Son Goku..."
- Goku: "Hehe... Wari i na... Kondo bakkari wa wakuwaku shine yo... Ossoro shiku te yo gatagata shite ra a...

Lilian Olsen's Viz Manga translation:
- Piccolo: "Does it not thrill you, Son Goku?"
- Goku: "Heh... "thrill" probably isn't the word I'd pick... "Spitless" might be a better one... or "terrified""..."
coola wrote: Wed Apr 30, 2025 10:13 am DB Manga Polish translation:
-
- Piccolo: "You must be looking forward for this, huh?
- Goku: "Sorry, not this time, i'm trembling."
Steve Simmon's DBZ anime translation:
- Piccolo: "You must be pretty excited, huh, Son Goku?
- Goku: "Sorry, but this time, I ain't all that excited. I'm so scared, I'm trembling."

FUNimation's first DBZ dub:
- Piccolo: "Some brother! I don't think your mom gave him enough spankings when he was a kid."
- Goku: "Yeah, the creep! You'd think he'd want to make up for lost time! He never even took me out to a ball game!"

FUNimation's second DBZ dub:
- Piccolo: "C'mon Goku, let's finish this guy. We'll charge him together."
- Goku: "Wait, not yet. Not until he tells us what he's done with Gohan. Now where is he? Where have you hidden him?"

FUNimation's DBZ Kai dub:
- Piccolo: "So what? Personally, I find the prospect exciting."
- Goku: "Heh! You would. But "exciting" is probably not the word I'd use right now. To be completely honest, I'm pretty terrified."

LATAM dub (Anime Linguist's translation):
- Piccolo: "Ha Ha Ha. Doesn't it seem like it could be fun, Goku?"
- Goku: "No. Forgive me but this time, it doesn't seem like fun. To be honest, I have to admit, I'm afraid."

Arabic "Venus" dub: (using the original names for simplicity's sake)
-
-
- Piccolo: "Hmm, that (threat) sounds funny, doesn't it, Goku?"
- Goku: "Heh, except I do not find anything funny about him, Piccolo. He's only making me furious."

What's interesting that unlike other dubs the writers chose to adapt "gatagata" to be of anger "al ghadhab" than than fear. Can't confirm if this was their own adaptation of the word or they specifically chose to have Goku say he's angry because they thought it'd be "unheroic" of him to say he's scared.

- Well, this makes everything more exciting.

- Hmph, eeeh, sorry Piccolo but this time I'm not even a little bit excited, to tell the truth I could say I'm scared.

Eeeé and É can be used both as an agreement, especially the lone É, and it can also be used as a pause in the speech, like you're thinking about what you're saying next. In this case they used the latter to sound similar to the japanese dub, to the point it's actually a little strange when you hear in Portuguese even though it makes sense, it's not how we talk, it's Portuguese talking like japanese if that makes sense.

I appreciate that Funimation went from completely rewriting the scene to make some dumb kidvid banter then realized it was lame and rewrote it for the redub to be more “serious” but still make it wildly accurate from the source material and then finally Kai rewrote it again to be a lot closer to the intent but also somehow miss the point and still not suggest Goku would normally be excited and instead put emphasis on Piccolo being the battle hungry warrior.

Just out of curiosity (I'm very early on in my own journey to learning Japanese), why do you translate "へへ" as "E E" and not "Hehe?"

Huh, that Kai line is pretty consistent with what Sabat said about referencing the Viz manga for a lot of Kai's dialogueu
Yamcha: Do you remember the spell to release him - do you know all the words?
Bulma: Of course! I'm not gonna pull a Frieza and screw it up!
Master Roshi: Bulma, I think Frieza failed because he wore too many clothes!

It’s been forever since I watched Kai was any of the dialogue 1:1 with the Viz manga? I thought most of it was just Simmons translations slightly reworded and occasionally pulling from the old dub when the dialogue was “close enough” to the Japanese

I love the idea that Son Goku can be shown as scared; more often than not, he is excited, and sometime the fear is what excites him, too; I think Raditz was the one of the few, if not only person, that had Goku absolutely scared shitless. Add on top the fact that Raditz being his brother probably made him more scared - Goku knows what he is capable of so imagining someone like him but with no sense of compassion is what scared him more than anything.

Pilaf never put fear in his heart. Piccolo never did. Nor did The Red Ribbon Army. He was more excited to fight Vegeta than he was scared - confident in his newfound abilities and strength. Against Freeza, he showed worry and was scared later on when Freeza showed more of his power. I don't even think Beerus instilled as much fear into Goku that Raditz did.

Interesting observation. We know Goku to be confident in his abilities and even at moments of weakness or running out of strength he never shows actual fear. When he says an opponent is much stronger than him he takes it as a matter of fact more than anything and shrugs it off till the next fight. With Raditz it was the first time he says he is actually scared that an opponent of his power exists. The failure of the 20x Kaioken Kamehameha against Freeza would be the closest second time he has shown actual fear over a hopeless situation.

I always thought Goku felt fear VS Radditz because it was the first time he was facing an enemy and he was already a father.

When you get children, life changes. For Goku, it was not just a matter of fighting a strong enemy, this guy had kidnapped his child!
Therefore his dialogue makes sense.

I watched the video, I knew LATAM version would be well done because it was adapted by Brenda Nava, someone very often not recognized well enough and a very nice lady I had the pleasure to meet in person during my comic convention days.
To know more about Brenda-Sama, this is in Spanish but google translation might be able to take care of it for you:

The fact that Radditz kidnaps Gohan definitely plays a role in making the fight more stressful for Goku, though he's fearful even before Radditz arrives on the island. Even people who like challenges typically don't feel excited if the task at hand is literally impossible. Someone who likes videogames might enjoy an incredibly difficult boss, but they wouldn't enjoy something that was actually impossible (due to glitches, being underpowered, whatever). A professional runner might enjoy competing against another runner, but wouldn't enjoy racing against a person in a car. Etc.
