So this peaked my curiosity to see how other available international dubs around the world handled this scene and Goku's switch from "Wakuwaku" わくわく to "Gatagata" ガタガ. Share what you have and I'll add them to the list below

-
- Piccolo: "Wakuwaku Surudaro Son Goku..."
- Goku: "Hehe... Wari i na... Kondo bakkari wa wakuwaku shine yo... Ossoro shiku te yo gatagata shite ra a...
Lilian Olsen's Viz Manga translation:
- Piccolo: "Does it not thrill you, Son Goku?"
- Goku: "Heh... "thrill" probably isn't the word I'd pick... "Spitless" might be a better one... or "terrified""..."
Steve Simmon's DBZ anime translation:coola wrote: Wed Apr 30, 2025 10:13 am DB Manga Polish translation:
-
- Piccolo: "You must be looking forward for this, huh?
- Goku: "Sorry, not this time, i'm trembling."
- Piccolo: "You must be pretty excited, huh, Son Goku?
- Goku: "Sorry, but this time, I ain't all that excited. I'm so scared, I'm trembling."
FUNimation's first DBZ dub:
- Piccolo: "Some brother! I don't think your mom gave him enough spankings when he was a kid."
- Goku: "Yeah, the creep! You'd think he'd want to make up for lost time! He never even took me out to a ball game!"
FUNimation's second DBZ dub:
- Piccolo: "C'mon Goku, let's finish this guy. We'll charge him together."
- Goku: "Wait, not yet. Not until he tells us what he's done with Gohan. Now where is he? Where have you hidden him?"
FUNimation's DBZ Kai dub:
- Piccolo: "So what? Personally, I find the prospect exciting."
- Goku: "Heh! You would. But "exciting" is probably not the word I'd use right now. To be completely honest, I'm pretty terrified."
LATAM dub (Anime Linguist's translation):
- Piccolo: "Ha Ha Ha. Doesn't it seem like it could be fun, Goku?"
- Goku: "No. Forgive me but this time, it doesn't seem like fun. To be honest, I have to admit, I'm afraid."
Arabic "Venus" dub: (using the original names for simplicity's sake)
-
-
- Piccolo: "Hmm, that (threat) sounds funny, doesn't it, Goku?"
- Goku: "Heh, except I do not find anything funny about him, Piccolo. He's only making me furious."
What's interesting that unlike other dubs the writers chose to adapt "gatagata" to be of anger "al ghadhab" than than fear. Can't confirm if this was their own adaptation of the word or they specifically chose to have Goku say he's angry because they thought it'd be "unheroic" of him to say he's scared.

- Well, this makes everything more exciting.
- Hmph, eeeh, sorry Piccolo but this time I'm not even a little bit excited, to tell the truth I could say I'm scared.
Eeeé and É can be used both as an agreement, especially the lone É, and it can also be used as a pause in the speech, like you're thinking about what you're saying next. In this case they used the latter to sound similar to the japanese dub, to the point it's actually a little strange when you hear in Portuguese even though it makes sense, it's not how we talk, it's Portuguese talking like japanese if that makes sense.
