Discussion regarding the entirety of the franchise in a general (meta) sense, including such aspects as: production, trends, merchandise, fan culture, and more.
Edit: After investigation I've found out this uses the same master as Selecta Vision but has another encode. In other words; keep away.
Spoiler:
I have no idea why this has gone under the radar but last night someone pointed out that Dynit (Italian distributor) has released Dragon Ball on Blu-ray with what appears to be an upscale that is not AB or SV. From what I've been told, these releases offer better quality than previous attempts at upscaling the series.
The Dynit Blu-rays cover the original Dragon Ball series and feature remastered audio for the Italian dub alongside the upscaled video. Unlike some other international releases, these seem to maintain the original 4:3 aspect ratio rather than cropping to widescreen.
Has anyone here had a chance to check these out? I'm curious about how they compare to AB and SV's releases and if they're worth importing for collectors outside of Italy.
If anyone has screenshots or comparison images, I'd be interested in seeing them to get a better idea of the upscale quality.
Huh, I had no idea that this existed, I was about to offer myself as an escrow to help you (or anyone else) purchase it outside from Italy, but I just looked at the price tag, so I'm afraid I can't really help you, I'm sorry. I'll ask around if any of my real life friends happen to have it, though, but it's unlikely.
The packaging for this set is top notch. I wish Crunchyroll would do something like this for original Dragon Ball, but sadly outside of Germany (which uses the Selecta Vision upscale) they don't seem interested in milking anything other than Z and Super.

Starting to seem like everybody but Toei and Crunchymation are interested in releasing original Dragon Ball on blu-ray
That's the sad reality unfortunately.
When it comes to franchise, it's either Z, Super, or Daima.
The show really deserves a proper remaster from film, not just upscale.

This is very unfortunate. The way this part of the franchise has been neglected by the two is truly baffling, as they're basically leaving $$$ on the table.

And I’ve said elsewhere at this point I’d settle for a Selecta Vision import or an upscale of the Blue Bricks just for the principle alone.
Of course I would prefer a proper remastering, the Japanese broadcast audio to be included, the proper opening and ending animations and Japanese title cards and credits instead of blatantly favoring the dub but at this point? I’d be happy to see the bare minimum because of how neglected the 86 series is
If I remember correctly, Dynit also released Sailor Moon DVD's with best looking video?

Thanks to Discotek:
Magic Knight Rayearth get DVD release in 2015 and Blu-Ray release on 2016
Saint Seiya: The Lost Canvas get DVD release in 2015
Those screenshots are screaming Selecta Vision so I'm not convinced there's anything meaningfully different here, and to be honest, even if there is a slight difference, these shots look terrible so it's a bit of a wash anyway.

I can unfortunately confirm that this upscale use the SV masters.
That is a shame. So AB was the only European distributor that went their own way with color correcting original Dragon Ball and now their release is cancelled.
Dragon Ball, as always, is cursed on home video.

Which is such a shame.
You would think one of the GREATEST and most influential anime EVER would have gotten a proper remaster release at this point.
Not to mention, next year is 40th anniversary of the anime (1986) which would be PERFECT opportunity for such a release, yet so far, no news from Toei yet; it seems very wishful thinking.
I'm sure further volumes will be released to cover the whole series.
Dynit did individual box sets for original Dragon Ball. This is a collection of box sets.
I hope that these European releases are selling well so that they'll eventually get to GT, that's long overdue a Blu-Ray release from anyone.
