How many territories still air original Dragon Ball or have relatively recently?

Post by Dragon Ball Ireland » Mon May 20, 2024 8:57 am

Original Dragon Ball never gets as much love as Dragon Ball Z or even Kai, although there are a few cases of countries where it either still airs or has aired, say in the last decade or so.

Off the top of my head we have:
  • Indonesia : Supposedly a redub started airing on Global TV in 2015 but was cancelled midway because of current censorship laws, although sadly the wikis don't cite a source for this
  • Paraguay : Thanks to my good friend Cure Dragon 255 I know Le Tele has been airing it since last year, as well as fellow the Vierci Group-owned channel Telefuturo since 2021. Good old Latin America
  • South Korea : Anibox has been airing a new dub (crazy how much Korea redubs stuff) since last Christmas and currently airs 4 episodes every Sunday, just checked last night and they seem to be on episode 64 now
  • Vietnam : HTV3 aired original Dragon Ball between March 29th and August 28th 2016 on their break between the conclusion of Kai episodes 1-98 and Final Chapters
Is there any others? Would love to know.

I'd love to see Poland finally dub it, fans seem quite happy with the Kai dub they got recently. I think China would probably rerun it if TV wasn't so strict as from what I gather native fans love the native dub by Liao Yi.

Wow didn't know about them, thanks for that.

Forgot about RTLZWEI, thanks for the reminder as I was due an update on then as last I heard it was unclear if they would air the whole series. Luckily it seems they did as of last August.

I just checked their schedule, and it looks like they don't air it anymore. I just checked my spreadsheet and it seems you are correct that they did air it around 2019, which is nice as its not that long ago all things considered.

In any case does anything Smile TV-related also apply to Greece? I believe both countries share the channel.

First of all, this is not the Smile TV of Cyprus. Here is where you can find their program for example, although it is not always correct. And it wasn't just airing in 2019. I happened to see it playing on the channel again this year on January 2024.

Yes, but one channel doesn't always follow the other. So no, the same doesn't apply for Greece.

I also don't know if the first series was re-aired legally in Cyprus. Certainly for Dragon Ball Z both countries legally got the rights back in 2017 as confirmed by Toei Animation Europe but I don't know how legally Cyprus re-aired OG Dragon Ball since Smile TV was never on the Main Broadcasters section in their Dragon Ball page unlike their Dragon Ball Z page where you could see Smile TV written there.

Good ole' Latin America, nice that Dragon Ball is always being rerun there.

Since this thread was last active original Dragon Ball returned to India last August with 5 new dubs, although sadly only 58 episodes aired. The month after it aired subbed on GameToon in Poland.

Hopefully Daima will inspire more interest in the original series as it gets more dubs and becomes more accessible over time.

Argentine state channel PakaPaka will start airing Dragon Ball Z in July.

And not only that, there will also be a new show called Gen Z, which is targeted towards fans of the Dragon Ball franchise.

That's neat that they will be airing all three original anime (Dragon Ball, Z and GT). The show dedicated to Dragon Ball fans should be interesting too.

It's been like almost 10 years since Dragon Ball was last seen on the local Argentine TV (the last time was from 2012 through 2015 in Telefe's ZTV block).

So, it's neat AND surprising that Dragon Ball will air in one of the least expected places.

Of course, the announcement was met with some controversy from
certain political sectors
