Regarding the thread "FUNimation DragonBox News Bit"

Post by ShinRogafuken » Wed Jun 18, 2025 11:17 pm

I want to apologize for the poor and insensitive way I worded my second post in the linked thread when I was an adolescent:
viewtopic.php?t=11814

The first post I made there demonstrates that, in my head at the time, I of course meant to exclude people with disabilities from the category of “lazy for not wanting to read subtitles” (a category I no longer believe in to begin with).

When making that second post, I unfortunately thought it was self-evident that I had already excluded those with disabilities from the discourse. But looking back on it, I certainly needed to be clearer with my wording. That was a poor choice of words from my young, adolescent self. And for that, I apologize.

I'm also sorry for having been too defensive/argumentative about my preference for the Japanese version back then. I've long abandoned the immature view that it matters what version of the show international fans prefer, sub or dub. Just enjoy the anime (or manga) however you like. If you don’t want to read subtitles and simply want to enjoy the dub, I totally get that! Go for it and, most importantly, have fun!

Peace and all the best,
Shin Rogafuken

Hi there-

A little growth and reflection is always wonderful, and I’m glad you’re able to take a look back and learn from these shared experiences and conversations.

We will ask, however, that you please not respond to long-since-dead threads from forever ago. We’ve removed a couple necroposts that you made in, for example, 16 year old forum threads. It’s evident you put a lot of thought into these responses, but per our community guidelines, it’s not OK to go back and resurrect these ancient threads.

Thanks!

Everyone says things they're not proud of, be it when they're young, upset, not feeling well, etc...; try not to think too much about it.

As someone who grew up on the dub and recommended it to other people, I can now say that I was totally wrong in doing so after experiencing the original Japanese version. I've been re-watching the show in Japanese from Pilaf and now I'm a 3rd into the Cell arc, and let me tell you it feels like watching a completely different show. I'm watching Seed of Might's release which includes the Broadcast audio. The quality between the original Japanese and American English is honestly night and day; it's not even close. I do agree that people should watch what they enjoy, but you're missing out by sticking with Funimation's mediocre (to put it nicely) dub.

ShinRogafuken don't worry. Time is great, as we all change and mature as we have more life experiences, but everyone should acknowledge things they were wrong about. It's admirable you are willing to do so.

People can also enjoy both the English dub and Japanese version. The important thing is that they recognize the faults in whatever version they watch in addition to their dub. I am not a big fan of Funimation's Z dub, but I do love the Westwood dub and can see that while its enjoyable in its own right (as Funimation's Z dub is for its fans) it is a rushed production and is not a faithful adaptation of the Japanese version.
Do you have any info about international non-English broadcasts about the Dragon Ball anime or manga translations/editions? Please message me. Researching for a future book with Dragon Ball scholar Derek Padula

What we really need is Dragon Box Z Blu-ray with EVERY English dub.
