Has the hype for Daima died down?
I don't see much discussion about it anywhere.
I know we've theorised the low number of dubs could be because the international branches of TOEI think there's more money to be made on Kai and Super dubs, but it's still a shame that more haven't been made or started.
Also a little surprised Crunchyroll haven't announced a home release yet. Will there still be much excitement about it if it's revealed?

Re: Has the hype for Daima died down?
I mean, it was only 20 episodes, and it ended six months ago. Not a whole heck of a lot else to say or do about it at this point.
Toei almost certainly doesn't want cheap reverse importation when they're selling like six different premium box sets of it over there in Japan, so we won't get an international home release until that runs its course.
The Daima DLC for Kakarot hit, and we're certainly talking (well, past-tense "talked") about that...! But again, anything and everything you need to say for it can be done in ~45 minutes.

Good points, I hadn't thought about reverse importation, DLCs is significant too, although I'd question would a full-on Daima video game bring even more attention to the brand.VegettoEX wrote: Thu Aug 07, 2025 1:41 pm I mean, it was only 20 episodes, and it ended six months ago. I wonder how the English dubbed theatrical runs did? Kai got Spanish screenings last year, so I figured maybe putting episodes of the TV anime in cinemas was something TOEI would consider more of. It might help launch more dubs with a lot of momentum.

Re: Has the hype for Daima died down?
Daima had a global release on Netflix, so I can see that changing Toei's strategy with international dubs and broadcasts.Dragon Ball Ireland wrote: Thu Aug 07, 2025 1:32 pm I know we've theorised the low number of dubs could be because the international branches of TOEI think there's more money to be made on Kai and Super dubs, but it's still a shame that more haven't been made or started.
Look at how Super was released in English: they only started the simulcast a few weeks before the dub was announced, and then premiered the dub on broadcast television before it went to streaming. Daima's distribution was/is very different, and presumably getting dubs out there ASAP isn't as high a priority as it was in the past.
Re: Has the hype for Daima died down?
No it has not. Not in Mexico.
In México there are only 2 TV stations, the rest of TV content comes from US, mainly, and there are some Mexican channels on cable/satellite TV. Although most people watch streaming services, many restaurants or street food stands have only access to regular TV and they would watch dragon ball, no matter in which saga, it is always something Mexicans are willing to watch while they eat so they can save the trouble of having to change the channel per customer's request and they can watch it while they cook/prepare the food... but my whole point here is, one of those two broadcasters recently started to show Daima and there was hype. There is a hype still.

Re: Has the hype for Daima died down?
obviously, because its a forgettable series that dident had much impact on the franchise
Re: Has the hype for Daima died down?
It's biggest hype was regurgitated transformation, ripped straight from GT. One that was very divisive as well. Without any new interesting additions to the franchise, I don't see it having a lasting impact besides "Toriyama's last project".
Re: Has the hype for Daima died down?
Well, Daima was a short 20 episodes side story which was self contained and ended a while ago.
I don't think there is need to talk about it much, there's no new content, no big theories to discuss...

Re: Has the hype for Daima died down?
Daima by design was meant to be a celebration of 30 years of GT. A self-contained anniversary special. It's not meant to be a long-running storyline.
So it's not surprising that not many people are talking about it anymore.
Still, Daima has its theories. If it can indeed be connected to Super, Toyotaro or Toei could feature SSJ4 in a future Super arc. Maybe Broly could tap into it or, wild theory, Goku will mix it with his Ultra Instinct and we'll have the infamous "Super Saiyan 5" of AF in Official Dragon Ball.

Akira Toriyama, DBS vol.4 joint interview with ToyotaroAt his core Zamasu is good like Shin, though I guess you could say he was so fastidious that it backfired. But you know, for this "Future Trunks Arc" you had to depict Zamasu and Trunks' inner conflict, right? If this was back when I was drawing the manga myself then I doubt if I could have done it. I mean, I'm not very good at depicting the characters' psychology on the page. So this all came together because now I only have to think up the story. [...] On my own, I doubt I would have been able to express Zamasu's fall to the dark side.
Re: Has the hype for Daima died down?
There were a lot of interesting ideas, but they weren't told as a story. Reading off a list of lore is not a fun television series.
Daima doesn't feel like it was made by a writer and director and that's the big reason why it just isn't sticking.

Re: Has the hype for Daima died down?
Has the hype for Dragon Ball died is the question to be asked? Not much going on at all these days, sadly. It was also only 20 episodes as Mike pointed out.

And the answer is NO. It never will. Even if it is just the same old, same old, hype for Dragon Ball will simply not die.sangofe wrote: Sun Aug 31, 2025 1:13 am Has the hype for Dragon Ball died is the question to be asked? Re: Has the hype for Daima died down?
In my experience, I think it was a series that simply come and go. It's not exactly the most memorable Dragon Ball show and may even have reinforced some stereotypes that people unfortunately associate with the franchise. But I would say it was a worth experiment.

Re: Has the hype for Daima died down?
At this point the only thing that could drun up hype here in the states would be a Blu-ray release. Because they've already put out the Kakarot and Sparking Zero DLC. I guess the return of Fighterz is cool, but it's a derivative of a form thar already exists in the game so I don't know if that'd build hype.
We need a Steve Simmons' re-translation of the manga.

Re: Has the hype for Daima died down?
I agree that the hype died down (actually, it doesn't exist anymore), but I blame that mostly on how the series was marketed by Toei. This series has the quality of a movie, sometimes even exceeding it, so why not release it as a trilogy of films in theaters instead ? The Demon Slayer movies prove that you can release 2 hour long anime movies without losing the audience, which would've been perfect for this.
The first 2 episodes could've been released for free as a 40 minute special to get people hyped for the movies.
The first movie would cover episodes 3-8, ending with the defeat of Tamagami 3 and the tease of the Majin brothers.
The second movie would cover episodes 9-14, which is the second world, ending with the gang arriving in the first demon world.
The third movie would adapt the remaining six episodes of the first demon world, with Ssj4 obviously being the focus here.
I re-watched it recently and I can tell you for a fact that it works far better as a collective of episodes than it does waiting each week for 20 movie minutes.

Re: Has the hype for Daima died down?
A compilation version with tighter editing and new scenes to between frame Daima with a more properly established central character would make for a really solid two ninety minute movies.

Re: Has the hype for Daima died down?
Is it just me, or did Daima not leave a very strong impression? It's weird. Even with Super and the movies, I always thought about them quite a bit for a long time after their release. I basically don't pay much attention to Daima anymore.

Re: Has the hype for Daima died down?
The way I see it, Daima is just like Resurrection F.
I mean sure, some characters got some new forms, we have Super Saiyan 4 nostalgia, but... What's there beyond that?
Discount GT, Discount Towa and Mira, Discount Ginyu Force, and the irrelevant Demon Realm History Story Time™
It also reeks of Toei's standard practice of "What was supposed to be a single standalone movie was stretched thin into a 15-episode anime arc."
Don't get me wrong, I'm glad Toriyama got to do one last project he had fun working with before he passed.
But Daima was just a nothing burger overall.

Re: Has the hype for Daima died down?
Daima is Super without the charm of an anime staff tossing in their own ideas and getting kind of funky with it. There's next to nothing to latch on to with its character writing or personalities.
I've said it one and I'll say it again: if Super's scripts had Daima's production time it would have been a tremendously better series overall. If Daima had Suoer's scripts, it would have been a tremendously better series overall, too.

Re: Has the hype for Daima died down?
I agree. Daima feels like a volume long Toriyama story stretched out across 20 episodes. I think it would have been a much better story if it were written and drawn by the man himself 20 years ago.JulieYBM wrote: Thu Jan 08, 2026 11:44 am Daima is Super without the charm of an anime staff tossing in their own ideas and getting kind of funky with it.
