Frames per episode info discussion
Hello,
I recently bought an animation cel and am looking to put it on display with extra info about the cel.
I've already found the cel in episode 146, I've even managed to track down which animator animated it, the only real piece of the puzzle I'm still looking to figure is a bit specialized of a question:
I want to list the actual FRAME it appears in the episode (at first appearance).
Any insight into where I should start the frame count? I'm thinking I'll omit the intro/recap and preview/outro and use the original Japanese episode (although I feel like us version would be interchangeable).
Any opinions on which version of the video would be the 'truest' version to frame count?
Thanks!

Re: Frames per episode info discussion
So ...nothing? I'm really just gonna have to make a guess?
Re: Frames per episode info discussion
To be honest, frame counts are a bit meaningless. It's usually the cut number that's relevant in anime production. If you counted those, that'd be easier and more meaningful as far as industry standards go.

So maybe I should count each different drawing as opposed to frame counting? Is that what you mean? I think that's a pretty understandable ideaAjay wrote: Fri Aug 15, 2025 12:17 am To be honest, frame counts are a bit meaningless. It's usually the cut number that's relevant in anime production. Also, should I omit the opening and last episode recap? In your opinion?
Re: Frames per episode info discussion
Basically, in animation, an episode is made up of multiple cuts - this refers to every time the camera cuts. For example, this is made up of three cuts.thelastdragonball wrote: Sat Aug 16, 2025 12:07 pmSo maybe I should count each different drawing as opposed to frame counting? Is that what you mean? If you want to know approximately what cut your cel is from, you'd count from the title card. If it's Part B, you'd count from the eyecatch. Unfortunately, you're still kinda relying on guesswork as often times the cut number resets if the storyboard artist chose to break the episode down into multiple scenes, in which case you'll just never know.
This is why I'd probably recommend not going with the idea and instead just having the plaque list the animator, the episode number, and the studio they belong to, perhaps. It'd be safer than potentially sticking incorrect information in there.
If you are insistent on frame count, then yes, you'd do every new drawing rather than what the video frame is, and you'd start that from the title card.
