So, Jump Festa schedule got announced and there is no DB stage at all this year..
I guess that means the manga won't be coming back in 2026 either? Radio silence on the whole lawsuit issue and they don't care enough to inform the fans either...

This is from the last pages of the final chapter of Jiya, a three-chapter story, penned by Akira Toriyama and drawn by Masakazu Katsura, published in 2009/2010 in Young Jump as part of a collab between the two. It isn't the only (or even the first) Galactic Patrol-related collab between the pair: Sachie-Chan Guu!! was published in 2008 (though the Patrol plays much more of a bit-part role in that story than in Jiya or Jaco).

I think Super is done at this point, tbh. Despite fan appetite (which won't last forever), it's very hard to see it coming back without being given the kind of united multimedia platform push that the current licensing troubles specifically make impossible.

The way shueisha is killing a legendary franchise like this needs to be studied. It's disgusting. Dragon Ball is too big to be owned by a bunch of incompetent people. Just sell the rights.
A world without Dragon Ball is just boring.

*whispers into the void*
"good"

I genuinely could not care less what "the fans" think; what this is here is a great opportunity to end the franchise's storytelling media altogether while it was somewhat still on a high note but very evidently starting to spin its wheels. Toyotaro has more or less consistently proven that he can't carry the torch without Toriyama's aid, and Toriyama is dead. Wrap it up.

Maybe some future initiatives they can take is adapting the (vastly superior, relative to the TV anime) DBS manga into another "Kai" anime, or if the license holders truly want to tell something new, take a DBO-esque approach and set their next series in the distant future so that Toriyama's cast is untouched and untainted. Even Toei knows better than to end up in another GT situation.

It's time to be honest and just call a spade a spade.

On one hand, I want Nagamine and Tomioka to do more Dragon Ball, only the other hand, IP work sucks and they should be allowed to do original projects and not have to worry about the bullshit that comes with adapting shit with too much oversight from an estate.

Anyway, when the next Dragon Ball anime comes around, I hope creative minds are let be to make a good series without come pencil pusher fucking with them.

But how can you say he has? Because of the hideious draft that was presented at Japan Expo? I don't know how you can say he can't do anything good without Toriyama. The only thing he did without Toriyama was the prequel, isn't it? Personally, I liked it. Were you thinking of anything else than these? Maybe the answers he gave at Japan Expo?

I mean... I was under the impression that the Moro arc was pretty much all Toyotaro, with only a tiny amount of input from Toriyama? Do we have confirmation that Toriyama did anything in that arc besides correcting drawings every now and then? And yet that's probably the most popular arc in the Super manga?

I attribute that popularity to the fact that it's the first manga only arc after the Super anime ended

Before that not many people were interested in reading slightly altered versions of already existing arcs.

The radio silence is always a shame. I'll take as much Dragon Ball as I can get, regardless of the source.

I don't really think it's a good stopping point, there's so much left to animate and so many loose ends, it'd be a lot of fun. Can't really relate with the "let it die" angle, if I lost interest in something I just ignore it. Wishing for Dragon Ball to die just sounds petty.

That's not exactly what I'm saying. There are things from the Moro arc that I liked. There are even things from the Granolah arc that I liked, albeit much fewer in number compared to Moro.

But my personal expectations for Dragon Ball are sky high. Moro is okay for what it is, but it's well below par of everything that preceded it, and Granolah definitely is. The manga in my view didn't recover until the Super Hero arc, but that was largely because it was a faithful adaptation of something that Toriyama already penned; as a result, it was the first well-paced and focused story Toyotaro had been involved in since 2018.

Forget all of that, though. What I am saying is that it's abundantly clear a lot of people are just starved for more DB content without fully understanding the consulting factor that was driving all of that content to begin with. I get that this fanbase is all about instant gratification and fanservice, but there's nothing wrong with just closing the curtain. It's overdue, honestly.

Shueisha has every right to want to slam the brakes and be reluctant to continue any of this. I know I would be.

I personally really liked the Moro arc and liked the Granolah arc less, but it was still good enough for me. Nobody will ever be able to replicate Toriyama's in anythin at his prime. He was unique in every sense; art, stort telling, panelling, sense of wonder, action and humor. Is that why you think it's better to just end it? I will admit that I really long for new Dragon Ball content and would be happy with Toyotarou but if they can get someone who understands and is able to replicate or go beyond what Toriyama did I would welcome that. I've been reading a lot of Dragon Ball fan manga lately and while there are competent people for the art and action, nobody really seems to be able to pull off the mix of Humor Toriyama had, and that's sad. The humor and sense of wonder is always lacking in those. Toyotarou did get some humor right but not nearly like Toriyama.

I think it might be that Dragon Ball is a world I never want to end because the whole world is engraved in my heart and it's part of my daily life and has been now for nearly 40 years.

Do you really think Shueisha is slamming the break because they fear quality drop? I get the impression the rights dispute is the cause.

The rights dispute between Shueisha and Capsule Corporation Tokyo began a while before Toriyama's death and was specifically over nearly everything except manga, particularly video games and animated projects. Anything beyond is pure hearsay.

We don't officially know the exact cause, but we know there's nothing actually stopping Shueisha from continuing Super's serialization in V Jump if they really wanted.

Really? That's interesting. I've missed an important detail then. I'd like to read about it. Do you remember the source where this is specified?

I wouldn't be sad if the manga never continued.

A cliffhanger in a midquel with Freeza returning with a new form, which he obtained in a RoSaT, an arc where Bardock was forced into the story and the antagonist got duper-strong by wishing it. Says all one needs to know about modern Dragon Ball.

Toyotarõ contributes for this cycle of never ending recycling. Overall Dragon Ball doesn't move forward neither do their characters, even if there's a few interesting aspects inside the nostalgia mesh.

This isn't singular to Toyotarõ. Toriyama, the anime staff basically everyone made modern Dragon Ball the empty shell it become.

I have interests outside of Dragon Ball, so I don't really think about when the next new story will arrive. I know it's going to happen eventually within the next few decades, I just need to be patient and it'll happen lol

The ending of the Super Hero Saga, with Piccolo saying farewell to kindergarten and the entire audience, was so touching and nostalgic.

I think it's a perfect ending for Super as a whole.

Super's job was to fill the 10 years void between Buu saga and end of Z. By the time of Super Hero, Pan is going to kindergarten, Trunks and Goten have grown up... there's not a lot of room left for new stories. The timeline has finally caught up with the End of Z.

Many people argued that Super should go beyond the End of Z... but I don't want that. The End of Z is the perfect ending to Goku's story, and I do not believe that Super should surpass it.

Honestly, the only reason why I want one more arc of Super is because of Black Freeza. And not because I like that overrated nostalgia bait (seriously, how many times has Freeza come back only to inevitably lose? Three?), but because the can of worms has been opened, so it must be closed before Super can truly be ended.

I really don't expect anything unique from the "Black Freeza Saga" except for a retread of Golden Freeza. But, again, the can of worms has been opened. You can't just pull out an "Ultimate Freeza" form and ignore it forever.

If Black Freeza never happened, I would be more than happy to consider this panel the final ending of Super:

Image
At his core Zamasu is good like Shin, though I guess you could say he was so fastidious that it backfired. But you know, for this "Future Trunks Arc" you had to depict Zamasu and Trunks' inner conflict, right? If this was back when I was drawing the manga myself then I doubt if I could have done it. I mean, I'm not very good at depicting the characters' psychology on the page. So this all came together because now I only have to think up the story. [...] On my own, I doubt I would have been able to express Zamasu's fall to the dark side.

I'm sure everyone has other interests outside of Dragon Ball. And I'm just as sure some people's favourite interest is Dragon Ball, which would naturally make them more eager and impatient to see new content. It's fine if it's not your main interest, but obviously Dragon Ball means a lot to a lot of people.

Exactly. I have tons of other things I’m looking forward to, and some of them are even being featured in Jump Festa. Doesn’t make it any less ridiculous how the DB franchise is being treated, nor will I suddenly care less about dragon ball when there released

Kind of bizarre to me that so many people ITT flat out want the franchise to stay the way it is. You would think we weren’t on a dragon ball forum (and on a board for a series that didn’t get to adapt its last two arcs which completely screwed them both out of any kind of merchandise and promotional material)

Daima, as decent as it was, still didn’t have much meat to it so we’ve got a little less than a year before the games wring its content dry, and then they’re back to darting back and forth between the most popular moments from Z and Super. I’m surprised that this is such an unpopular opinion here, but gacha game updates and (typically) very shallow DLC once every one or two years is no way to treat one of the most profitable IPs in the anime/manga industry. They’d never treat One Piece like this.
