"You only get the DVD with the sexpest on the cover!! And it randomly ends with the beginning of a story arc!!"
Jeez, these sets are weird.
Yeah, I’m not sure why Funimation decided on those 30/31 episode splits for the 86 anime’s boxset release instead of doing a split by sagas like they did for Z. “Season Three” picks up in the middle of Son Goku’s training with Karin and ends after the quarter finals of the 22nd Tenkaichi Budokai.
It's really weird. I imagine they wanted each set to feel 'even' for the price they would be charging, but...this is just really bad? Kind of like their packaging and basically anything else about the presentation of this DVD and their DVDs in general once we entered the season set era of their releases.
Yeah, they wanted to split 153 episodes as evenly possible into 5 “seasons”. But then you have the Z season sets which range as low as 26 episodes for season 7 and as high as 39 episodes for season 1, depending on saga length. Really they could have done the same for the 86 anime and split the 9 “sagas” between 5 sets.
Also yes it’s a shame they finally got the hang of DVD covers with the GT singles and Ultimate Uncut release (and even the DB saga sets although not great are at least better than just screenshots) only to go the bland route with one character to represent a whole season thing for the season boxset.

The weird split on episodes and respective arcs goes all the way back to the original syndication broadcast: Volume 8 ("Showdown") of what was later classified as "The Saiyan Conflict" had (dubbed/edited) episodes 23-25... despite 26 being the clear end of that arc (and the actual final episode of that actual broadcast season).
I suppose at the time you could make the argument for them not really caring about the broadcast seasons, just running tapes through, and everything (other than the specially-edited "Arrival" debut VHS) aaaallllll having only three episodes (until they got to the end again and had to cram four on)...
But yeah, that's just part of the weird legacy here.
Anyway, going to adjust the title on this thread, since that's simply untrue.
Weirdly enough, the decision to put edited episodes 26-28 on the same DVD seem to inform Funimation’s decision to count uncut episode 36-39 as part of the Saiyan saga/Vegeta saga/Whatever they’re calling it that week for the season 1 sets. Obviously, like you said, not how it went in the original broadcast nor is it the logical end to the Saiyan arc but Funi logic.

That's exactly what
Manga Entertainment ended up doing for the UK. They re-used the PAL "Saga" DVDs produced in Australia, but replicated the "Season" branding from the American sets, so the five seasons had 26-39 episodes per set (
Season Four included the
Tien Shinhan Saga and both haves of the
King Piccolo Saga, and was two discs larger than the other sets).
Anyway...
Going 'by the book', if naked Goku runs foul of
Bill 20, then presumably a tonne of other media would too (like
The Simpsons Movie, to give a random example). From what I've read, it seems reminiscent of Florida's
"Don't Say Gay Bill" - which has the apparent aim of criminalising LGBTQ+ representation through selective enforcement.

Texas and Florida are backward states run by far-right psychopaths. What else is new?

I'm not sure I understand what you're getting at by this post. Like, obviously Texas and Florida are Gerrymandered to hell and back and all, but that still bares repeating, especially within the context of this thread.
But yeah, these censorship bills are ultimately about making it more difficult for people—especially young people—to learn about 2SLGBTQIA+ people. They're written specifically to define queerness as pornography so as to then justify their decision to ban it. It's fucked up and will only harm young people.

I was confused by the sort of "what else is new?" bit because I couldn't tell if that was sarcasm in a dismissive way or not, my bad.

I would say the Simpsons movie is tamer since it doesn't show Bart's penis but hides it behind random objects, a la Austin Powers.
Dragon Ball actually shows Goku's penis, which can be considered a step further. How obscene that is, is up for debate. Perhaps the scene with Goku looking for Bulma's "balls" is more obscene.

Actually they do show Bart's penis, I think at the time it was commented on how they showed a penis before a boob without censorship.

My bad, I misremembered that movie. In that case, I would think that movie would be considered equally as "offensive" as Dragon Ball.

MAGA’s definition of “porn” is pretty skewed anyway. To them, a transgender person’s very existence is pornographic. That’s why ghouls like Elon Musk and Chaya Raichik are currently trying to declare war on Netflix over a three year old adult cartoon that has a transgender character. It’s especially ridiculous because the cartoon in question had already been canceled a while back.
They’re also trying to declare war on drag, which is funny, considering that Bugs Bunny has been doing that since the goddamn 1940s. Where was the outrage then?
Basically, what I’m getting at here is that these GOP freaks are going out of their way to censor anything they don’t like under the pretext of “protecting children from porn”.

Just to add to this, Musk is also one of those freaks who try to selectively
breed their children. A big reason why he hates trans people—particularly, trans women—is because his daughter Vivian transitioned, and Musk takes this as both an affront to himself, but also means he has one less way to "spread his genes."
But also, yeah. Trans women being mostly forced to work in porn and other sex work until relatively recently—the 2010s-ish—also contributes to general cis perception of us as inherently sexual. The fact that people can transition—literally shirk the idea that the gender we are assigned at birth means anything—also threatens their own perception of who they are, how the world works, and how even cis women are still generally not treated well despite their improvements in society over the decades, as well as challenging people to think about how cis women have privilege over trans women, et cetera.
It's all one big clusterfuck web of hate and it fucking sucks. Conservatives want trans people back in the closet or dead, and that extends to cis queer people, too.

Comparing someone with an actual Nazi shows an incredible lack of understanding of and disrespect towards history. It's not some cool buzzword to throw around and make a statement. Actually, the more it is used, the less effective it gets.

Somewhat related:
https://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2 ... ar/.229918
Non-profit organization Pen America revealed in a report documenting public school bans earlier this month that Yūsei Matsui's Assassination Classroom manga has been removed at least 54 times from school libraries in the United States throughout the 2024-2025 year.
Each individual volume ban counts as an instance. However, in some cases on the report, some schools have banned the 21-volume series in general, but it is only listed as a single instance. School districts that have banned the manga are the Hillsborough County Public Schools in Florida, Oak Ridge Schools in Tennessee, Pennridge School District in Pennsylvania, North East Independent School District in Texas, Horry County Schools in South Carolina, Lamar Consolidated Indpendent School District in Texas, Rutherford County Schools in Tennessee, and Nacogdoches Independent School District in Texas.
Other manga on the list of public school bans from the past school year include Attack on Titan, Bleach, Black Butler, Black Clover, Blue Period, Boys Run the Riot, Bungo Stray Dogs, Dragon Ball, Durarara!!, Fairy Tail, Hunter X Hunter, JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, Jujutsu Kaisen, Kekkaishi, Naruto, One Piece, Seraph of the End, and Soul Eater, among others.

Of course not really a surprise
These authoritarian, fascist ghouls are doing a rerun of the outrage many religious and conservative people had to various children's media in the late 90s/early 00s, but now with an out of control legislative branch of government.
It's all a part of the masterplan to censor everything they don't like and force society into consuming media, that is extremely limited with the age old bullshit justification of "protect the children!"
One can only hope making people aware of this blatant abuse of power would help them rethink their allegiances, but so far it's going too slowly, while those in power move too quickly.
Give it a year and these kinds of proposals and law changes will be on the table in majority of the Republican controlled states, no doubt.

I personally don’t understand the hand-wringing around the word Nazi when it’s an obvious catch-all term for the type of heinous shit right wing chuds have been and are getting to. Whether it’s getting into bed with the likes of Nick Fuentes, publicly calling for the violence and executions of political figures, disappearing immigrants and other “undesirables” by masked thugs, and sending out the military specifically to threaten and create an excuse to harm civilians. How are they not Nazis? And fine don’t want to call them a Nazi. Then I’m sure there’s another word you can use. And we are barely into year one of this administration, if you need more examples why Nazi is an appropriate term—well you’re gonna get a lot more of them.
A fascist, is a fascist is a fascist, is a fascist. Fuck ‘em.
