Dragon Ball Z Kai Revamped

Post by Stridster » Sat Sep 20, 2025 12:49 am

This is a fanedit version of dbz kai that aims to be the definitive version of the series. The aim of this edit is to replace all the redrawn frames with dbox footage, change the ost to an accurate kikuchi rescore, remove some remaining filler whilst keeping the good ones (mainly the extended fights), changing the opening and eyecatch to match the originals and replacing all of tfc with 4:3 footage instead of the cropped green tinted mess that we got.
I intially wanted to post about it when the dbz color corrected footage was finished, however I've decided to announce it a bit early to drum up some hype and receive input on the changes I made.

The kikuchi rescore I'm using for the first 98 episodes was created by Diccolo-420, with a few minor changes here and there.
The rescore for the tfc episodes on the other hand were done entirely by me.

When replacing the tfc footage with 4:3 footage I ended up using the dragon ball z kai recut by IAmTheMilkMan for most of it.
He had already replaced the cropped footage in his edit so to save time I simply used his version and added footage myself for any remaining filler scenes I wanted to keep in.
Since the version he used for the edit was the 30th anniversary blu ray version I ended up using it as well for any scenes I added in.
I also lowered the blue tint that was prevalent in his edit with the exception of a few scenes where it was badly needed.

Episodes 34-38 have higher quality footage for some reason, so I ended up using 30th anniversary footage when replacing the redrawn frames instead of dbox as usual. It doesn't look as good but it's a lot less jarring as a result.

Some scenes that were originally not in Kai were added in from the original series using the english dub from z.
These scenes are: scientists studying the saiyan pods, the ginyu force launching towards namek from planet freeza, Trunks cutting off the armor of one of freeza soldiers, cell attacking a civilian inside the airport, and two scenes of van zant shooting at civilians.

Altough the footage I'm using in tfc is 4:3, the video itself is 16:9. This is because the title cards and end credits are still in widescreen and I didn't want to crop them.

I also got rid of all the prologue and episode previews from all episodes both to save space and avoid a lot of hassle.

The final episode count ended up being 152. 98 for og kai and 54 for tfc.

Some other notable edits:

Freezas laugh in the opening has been changed to Chris Ayres' voice.
All mentions of the Taiyoken has been changed back to solar flare.
The kienzan and makankasappo are never called the destructo disc and special beam cannon.
Trunks' flashback to his timeline and Gohan turning ssj2 have both been extended to better match Mind Power Ki and Unmei No Hi Tamashii Tai Tamashii.
Gohan drips a puddle of blood after being attacked by Cell like in the original series.
Numerous instances of flashbacks have been removed.
Piiza, Pirozhki and Caroni have had many of their scenes removed.
The subplot of Gohan distracting Freeza after believing Goku died has been cut out entirely.
Yamcha knowing Trunks' name despite going to gokus home early have been altered.
Scene of Cell absorbing 18 has been shortened.
Vegeta doesn't get cut by a shard of Freezas armor just before transforming.
Daboras meditation chamber scenes are completely removed.
The episode where Gohan rescues a baby dinosaur has been removed, altough the previous episode where Videl fights the red shark gang has been kept in.

I have included a google drive with several previews to get an idea of what the project will look like. Note though that the dbox footage for the redrawn frames will be changed with color corrected ones later so any input on the quality of those are unnecessary.

Nice, glad this is finally in finished form.

Out of curiosity, could you send me a mono audio clip of the Chris Ayres version of Frieza destroying Planet Vegeta? I'd love to incorporate that into my rescores if you're ok with that.

I'm assuming you mean just the voice files. I'll leave the link in this thread if anyone else wants them.

I've added another scene that's not from kai. It's from the first episode when Radditz has a short flashback to Goku being sent to earth in his pod. I was inspired to add it after seeing team mirolo use it for their dbz recut. Radditz' voice is the same in both kai and og dbz so it's not very noticeable. I added a clip of it in my kai preview google drive folder.
I've also gone back and added more reverb effects to my tfc edit. I previously added them in for scenes with inner monologue since the reverb gets removed when removing the music from tthe tfc audio, however there are quite a few other moments that had reverb too, usually when someone powers up or uses a ki blast.

I've finished adding reverb to tfc. I've also inserted two new scenes into kai. One is when Goku states Shenron can't revive someone twice and the other is when Radditz starts wondering if gohans 710 power level is accurate. Both scenes have been added to the preview folder.

I decided to change the scene of gohan powering up at the start of episode 93 after seeing Team Kienzan's version of the scene in their dbz recut fanedit. He transforms into ssj2 seemingly solely due to the z fighters getting beat up rather than 16 dying, so I shortened it for consistency.
Clip is once again in the preview folder.

I made a small update to tfc, in the scene where gotenks uses his die die missile barrage I added a voice clip from one of the games where he says the attacks name. For some reason this was absent in the english dub.

New update, I've changed the voice of kid goku in the flashbacks in episode 97 from Clinkenbeard back to Nadolny to match the og dragon ball dub. Added it to the preview folder.

Speaking of og dragon ball I've seriously considered making a seperate edit of IamTheMilkMan's dragon ball recut fanedit in the future, where I add a few more scenes back in and remove a lot of the added dialogue, screams and grunts that were pointlessly added in the english dub, making it feel more like kai.
I might also make a few, (and I do mean few) dialogue changes using ai voices, altough I have zero experience in that field so that's still up in the air.

Two small updates. I reversed the two bgms I had switched in episode 127, and I also altered the scene in episode 2 where I briefly used the 2007 dub. It now begin a little earlier so the change in gokus voice isn't as jarring.

Merry Christmas everyone!!!

Seed of mights color correction of dbz has just been released and I’ve already begun incorporating it into my fanedit. After rendering, I will personally watch every episode to see if there’s any last minute changes I want to make (particularly with my tfc kikuchi rescore).

This project should be finished and released in only a month or two.

Think you could ever do this while having an option for faulconer score?

I’m afraid not, I would have to make huge amounts of edits to make that work and I’m really not interested in doing that for a score I don’t even like.
