I agree, I still remember the excitement of slowly getting new Dragon Ball movies in 2013-2015, and before Super was a thing they felt like huge events because of the novelty of it all.

I remember my disappointment at Battle of Gods not getting a theatrical screening, but being so happy when one was announced for Resurrection F, knowing I could support it and enjoy the experience.

At the time no one cared about how it was cheap fanservice, everyone was just thrilled to witness Dragon Ball on the big screen for the first time, and see Goku and Freeza duke it out once again.

Still glad we got these screenings, their success evidently led to much bigger theatrical runs for Broly, Super Hero, and whatever new movies should follow. There was a time when Dragon Ball in cinemas wasn't a thing in the UK and Ireland, I can see that being a given in the future.

I remember my local theatre (before they had reserved seating) moved the screening to their biggest screen because that many people pre booked tickets! Which was lucky for me and my friends cuz we winged it on the day haha!

I still have my ticket stub tucked away in the BD too!

God, I still can't believe how much this movie sucked. Even the one bright spot—using F as insert song—lasted all of twenty seconds.

Nagamine and rhe ither Tournament of Power staff really outdid this film when they brought Freeza back.

I would have created a thread to "celebrate" (!?) it as I did for other projects if we were under better circumstances... and if the movie didn't suck.

I remember being very excited for the announcement, after all, Movie 14 had been a good movie, and then I vividly remember the overwhelming feeling of bummer when the scan revealed Freeza was coming back. The very first thought was that nothing good could come out of a movie that was bringing Freeza back, and well... here we are. It didn't even pass the "test of time" because this is not one of those movies that "gets good with time", it is the same paper-thin "plot", nostalgia-driven, filled with recolors that led nowhere by the time the credits roll. It still is the worst of the bunch by very far, so congratulations, Movie 15!

Thank you for these soundtracks, though!

That sounds like a pleasant surprise. I pre-booked my ticket, was worried about Resurrection F selling out because there were only 3 screenings in the whole country.

I remember some people I talked to at the Broly premier were unaware Resurrection F had screenings, which means it probably could have been promoted better, but in spite of this I do remember the screening I attended being a full house.

This movie may have not aged well, but I'm glad it's success, especially at the time showed that Dragon Ball was still alive and well, despite there not being much new story content for years.

Watched it for first time, only checked part of Super adaptation before :)

I still think it would be way better, if Freeza was brought back shortly after he died to Trunks and he kept training during this whole time. All that "i need just few months of train, because I'm prodigy" is such BS, even for someone who try not care about power levels so much, and i understand Piccolo and others should not be out of breath while fighting Freeza Army, but I'm gonna blame it for "Well, realistically, Piccolo should just kill them all with one tiny KI blast, but that wouldn't be fun to watch" . Not huge fan of Goku and Vegeta not teaming up because of "muh pride" for several years already at this point, so i won't harp on it :) Biggest highlight for me was Blooma and her commentary during whole situation, and calling Freeza "dipshit" Once again, RIP Hiromi Tsuru.

6 out of 10 from me, i liked it better than i thought i would :)

I still remember like it was yesterday the outrage in this thread when we got leaks of Golden Freeza lol

That was actually one of the first threads I posted in and was more active in when I created my account here on Kanzenshuu. The movie is still terrible, only better than the (Super) arc in terms of animation, and thankfully, its "sucess" made it possible a new animated series to be announced 5 months later.

I sort of buy the training as he has never trained in this life but I feel like they should have showed him training though and that's where they could have had the F song inset.

Also agree re: Goku & Vegeta a 2v1 fight would have been awesome but tbh the main complaint about the film was lack of tension, having Beerus & Whis on the side-lines didn't help.

Never thought about it, but that would be cool. Another thing (if DB back then had stuck to its roots, with each arc being connected to the next) would’ve been if Champa had been involved in Freeza’s return/power-up, leading to the destruction of Earth, which definitely shouldn’t have been reversed by Whis. Then, the movie could’ve ended on a cliffhanger, and fans would have had to watch DBS (announced on the credits) to find out what happens next, starting with the U6 x U7 tournament arc. Yeah, a man can dream lol

It's insane coming back to this thread after how much time has passed, mostly because I still think it's 2019, not 2025, which makes this being a thread I made ten years ago even funnier lol

Anyway, dang, this film sucks so much lol. There's no tension! The pacing is abysmal! I don't know why I should care about any of the characters! Aaaah!!!

Not entirely sure why this thread is being bumped right now, but reading the early pages on this topic takes me back. It’s funny to look back on all the speculation about what this movie would be about and the surprise we all experienced when it was revealed that Freeza would be the villain.

Anyway, this movie still sucks. It barely even feels like a movie. The “plot” is about as paper-thin as most of the older DBZ movies, except it’s worse here because this one is stretched to an hour and a half. So much of the movie is just boring exposition, much of which is characters recapping what happened in the series. There’s no tension or weight behind anything that’s happening. Freeza, gets revived, shows up to fight the heroes, then Goku kills him. That’s basically it. Oh, and Jaco’s there too.

This also marked the point when I got tired of Beerus and Whis’ shtick and it was only their second appearance.

Really random and possibly obvious point, but I realised some time ago why Toriyama suddenly decided to drain the iconic blue from Vegeta's battle armour and replace it with a dull grey in this film. It may have been a subtle way of foreshadowing Vegeta attaining Super Saiyan God Super Saiyan. We take it for granted now, of course, but the reveal of Vegeta as Goku's equal in godly power was meant to be a huge twist, especially for Freeza, who's been out of the picture since the Super Saiyan bargain sale. Lo and behold, when he flicks on the divine blue aura, his plain suit reflects the blue lighting.

The arse flap, though... Yeah can't explain that design choice. Speaking of which, I swear there were some promo statements saying that Bulma designed this suit and gave it some fancy bells and whistles which, naturally, are never once alluded to in any Dragon Ball Super media. But where are these gadgets? Are they inside the arse flap??

I think the flap was just Toriyama searching for a way to make Vegeta's new armor look different. I think it would have been smarter to just not include it so that the design would be easier to animate.

I can't believe I was really hyped for this movie ten years ago.

For me, it didn't age well. In fact, I prefer to watch the episodic Super version because the plot didn't really work well for a movie.
A little too late but yeah, I've been officially active in Kanzenshuu for ten years :)

I like Resurrection 'F'.

I like that it's Toriyama goofing off with an ultimately low-stakes conflict that didn't really matter and was basically an excuse to have everyone shoot the shit with all the fun character interactions he's good at. I like that it featured Jaco for no other reason than wanting Jaco in Dragon Ball proper. I like that despite all of the above, it still has a message about how deeply unserious and petty revenge is as a concept; Frieza isn't treated with any kind of reverence or respect by the writing or even the characters themselves, literally just being the creator reminding people to stop putting this irredeemable jackass on a pedestal.

Mind you, this story was written prior to Super – a series that takes Frieza a little more seriously as an antagonist later on – and is thus best understood in its original context. Mind you also, even in its original context, this is still the weakest of Toriyama's films. Mind you also again, the worst Toriyama movie is still a good time even now, a whole decade after its release.

A solid 7 is about where I'd put it.

Recently rewatched this after not seeing it for many years. It’s still really bad. It’s my least favorite of all the Dragon Ball movies imo. Wild how my opinions changed because even despite not liking Blue and Golden when that released (still dont) I was hype at the time. I was still in that “cool new DB!” Mode that I guess I didn’t care what we got.
The plot is very thin, not many fun character moments or cool shots, there’s not really much good I can say about it except for the insert song and the section of the squad fighting the soldiers.
