They can't beat you up and steal your lunch money if you just don't go to school.

Because bullying is hilarious. Hahaha stuff that weeb in that locker lol.

Okay seriously, bullying is never funny. And I wish it didnt come from someone who should understand how cruel and inhumane bullying is. No one deserves bullying. Sure RETALIATION or Actually punching up instead of down is awesome. I really dont know what brought that on.

Is it though? Studio Ghibli movies aside most anime dubs are non-union and don’t have pull to get “actual celebrities “

That's because until now only Studio Ghibli Films really had that clout needed to get celebrities. And to be fair if you are a Studio Ghibli licensee you already must be pretty respectful and worthy of the license. They dont give it to just anyone.

I have to first explain and put into context WHY this is concerning at best and terrible at worst.

Acting for a dub is not the same as acting for simply an animated original production. And sure, the Anglosphere is pretty lucky most of their experiences with Star Talents have been great (James Masters was beyond unreal in DBS, so good, and he even worked with less pay!)

But what if a dub simply casts some random starlet they want to promote some anime that would have been much better off with actual voice actors that can do dubbing, and be good at it?

Dub Casting should always be respectful of the piece of art it is creating. Like when GKids cast a really talented trans actress as Miss Hana on Tokyo Godfathers.

https://www.animenewsnetwork.com/interv ... rs/.159488

What if some big wig from some studio says "I could cast some cis man to play this cartoon character in drag and make more moolah. Fuck Respect for the medium and trans people." Instead?

What if instead of getting a deaf actress for Shouko Nishimiya they gave it to the flavor of the month celebrity.

And it might happen sooner than we think.

If this all sounds too alarmist Its less that and more that I am a bit ticked off that people dont get why this is concerning and why it is a topic worth discussing and not mockery. I think we are still a bit far off from John Cena Anime.

I mean, a company like Disney (which produced and distributed most of the dubs for Ghibli films) had the resources and influence to hire celebrities, plus they had direct contact with Ghibli and any changes had to be approved by them.

Channing Tatum was in the dubs for the latest Demon Slayer movie, so we're dangerously closer to that happening.

I feel like "celebrities" (TV/movie/music stars) don't end up doing regular dubbing gigs because of the money. You're talking about people who earn a small fortune every time their name is on something. A big Disney type movie that's going to be out in theaters and rake in crazy money? Sure. An anime prophecy that'll air exclusively on Crunchyroll? Nah.

I don't know how much voice actors make, but I've never heard stories of the crazy good money. I've heard the opposite, where they didn't get paid nearly what it'd worth. And I'm sure that's improved a bit, but I can't imagine them being millionaires. It would just create bad morale if they have a chunk of that budget to a celebrity who wants to come in and play around.

Sean Schemmel said in his interview with Geekdom he wouldn't be dubbing Dragon Ball as he has been for 20+ years for very, very little pay if he didn't love it. Funimation were also non-union so they paid lower rates than union dubbing companies, which don't even pay that well as Ian Corlett said he could make more money washing windows. Celebrities would have to love the source material, as James Marsters does, to be willing to work for far less than usual, which they will need to be willing to accept for anime dubbing.

It also helps that while James Marsters is definitely more high profile than what Crunchymation usually gets he’s still more of a tv actor who gets steady work doing stints on shows. It’s not like trying to get Sydney Sweeney or Michael B Jordan to do voice work on your low paying dub.

I forget who it was, but someone once described the pay at FUNimation as "donuts and coffee money" and if that doesn't tell you everything you need to know, well, lol. Lmao

This is why there's such a hussle by actors to tie together and promote all of their various ventures on social media and paid event/con appearances: they're working actors. They're not fucking off for years at a time because they just did a lead role in a blockbuster, they're constantly booking gigs because if they don't then they don't get to eat or have a roof over their heads.

The anime dubbing industry in the United States is cheap paying shit, it's why the licensee is licensing anime to dub and not just spending the cash to make their own cartoon.

I don’t think anyone needs to worry about a non-Ghibli anime dub hiring celebrity voices. You’re not going to hear someone like Timothee Chalamet in a Dragon Ball dub.

When Tony Todd was alive, I wanted him to voice Moro if the rest of the DBS manga ever got adapted. I feel like his voice is perfect for the character.

Pretty sure it was stated Chris Sabat was salary at 20K a year. Even for 1999/2000 that’s insanely low pay. It’s also, as we know, why he voiced about a third of the cast.

Tatum is also apparently a fan of the series that he watches with his daughter, not unlike Marsters relationship with Dragon Ball iirc. We’re not anywhere near close to “A lister in an anime dub cashing a paycheck “ territory

I think that at most we'll see some influencer make a cameo on a Dragon Ball related dub, I don't think Crunchyroll will invite any A-List celebrities because that will flip the project Union (And might raise the budget to astronomical levels as well), unless TOEI assigns the project to an L.A house that would be willing to bring Texas talent back

I want Moro to have a scary ass voice if the Moro saga ever gets dubbed. Like Robert Englund.

I'd love to hear Scott McNeil play Moro. That ominous tone he speaks with would be perfect.

I think the conversation should be about dubs paying more before celebs doing anime
Looking for these rare items/information:

Any information or recordings pertaining to Dragon Ball Z's syndicated run on WAWB
Any information regarding the stations that carried the origin Dragon Ball in the USA
