Official On-Going DBZ 2015 Movie Thread: "Resurrection 'F'"
Re: Official On-Going DBZ 2015 Movie Thread: "Resurrection 'F'"
I remember watching this one in Tokyo in a movie theatre. I was baffled walking out. It had some good elements (they really should have kept Gohan's redesign) but the story was really, really bad. From Frieza casually catching up in power by training for 4 months to excluding characters like Yamcha and Gotenks to fight Frieza's army and instead bringing Roshi. Roshi, who already claimed he was way out of his league at the start of DBZ.
Worst thing had to be Frieza winning, only for the good guys to casually rewind time to try it again and give the win to Goku. Looking back, it sure was a sign of what's to come, writing wise.
Battle of Gods was great and felt fresh. They should have kept it at that.

There aren't many DB movies I don't enjoy rewatching, this is one of them. Remove Jaco and I'm not even here.
The earthlings fighting little runts for 30 minutes on a 90 minute movie... Gohan and Piccolo being insultingly weak... Beerus showing up just to let us know this ain't going nowhere and we are all safe... and that awful, awful greasy animation that DBS had up until the ToP.

Pointless as it may be, I did enjoy watching the B-teamers take on Freeza's army. Half the team there had been inactive fighters for a LONG time at this point so it's fun to watch them do SOMETHING. Super-era Dragon Ball has a lot of flaws but trying to find something to do with these characters isn't one of them.
I really don't like how Super Saiyan Blue looks. Just sort of tacky and doesn't make a ton of sense. Well I guess for Goku it kind of does, but how does Vegeta get the the form?

Since it was a topic of discussion in another thread and because I was interested, I did some digging and finally found a complete translation of Toriyama's original script from Volume 'F'. It was apparently posted in late 2015 and I had no idea or forgot.
Surely enough, he's hella comprehensive with the final fight. Well over a third of the entire script is dedicated to just the climax, with much of it including choreography notes as well.
This is noteworthy because it puts to bed any notion of Toriyama "not caring" about what happens in battle scenes, or leaving them up to the animators. That's largely true only of the TV anime and not his screenplays; the squad fighting Frieza's goons is like the one scene he's less particular about here, with everything else being basically 1:1 outside of a few minor details and continuity errors that Toei changed for the final version.
But yeah, fun read. It's got that snappy vibe of his writing that, unfortunately, doesn't carry over all too well in the film itself.

We can only assume the ritual happened off-screen at some point after the events of Movie 14 and prior to Vegeta going to train with Whis. Since Vegeta demands Goku to perform the ritual on him at the end of that movie.

I thought it was said somewhere he reached it on his own? Not sure, in the DBS retelling version maybe?Grimlock wrote: Mon Nov 03, 2025 10:51 amWe can only assume the ritual happened off-screen at some point after the events of Movie 14 and prior to Vegeta going to train with Whis. Yes, Vegeta attained the power of Super Saiyan God on his own in the Toei retelling. It goes without saying that the anime is but one continuity. It doesn't mean Vegeta attained it like that in Toyotaro's or in the movies' continuities.

I gotta know, is Goku using Bruce Lee's One-Inch Punch on Freeza in the script?Mr Baggins wrote: Mon Nov 03, 2025 8:54 amSurely enough, he's hella comprehensive with the final fight. Nah, that's an addition from Toei.
I probs should have used a different word there. It's more like the script describes their general movement/fighting patterns (such as "here Frieza starts to gradually maintain more distance from Goku") rather than getting too specific about what their limbs are doing. The animators had more freedom in that regard.
