Does the website have ANY WAY of telling you the rank the character you voted for is in?

The franchise started with the manga, so the 40th anniversary of the manga is the 40th anniversary of the entire franchise. There's no reason not to include characters from DBS, which is the official and canonical continuation of the original manga.
No, that's wrong.
They have different anniversaries for the manga and the anime, and that's how it's always been
No matter how much you might personally dislike it, the anniversaty of the manga is not treated as the anniversary of the whole franchise.
That's just arbitrary.

This poll doesn't serve any purpose when the original manga is outdated by now.

Your criteria is the arbitrary one.

It makes perfect sense to celebrate the anime and manga differently, because they are different products.
One is a comic made by Akira Toriyama and assistants, and the other is an animated series made by Toei Animation. Completely different productions and people worked on them.

That's how it always worked for anime and manga anniversaries, and it works this way for a reason.
It's kinda crazy to just come out and say "its actually arbitrary" just because you don't personally like it: it's just your own opinion.

And the original manga is not outdated, it's still and will always be the original source material, if anything, it's the one thing that aged the best in the entire franchise.

They're both just Dragon Ball at the end of the day. Separating them is arbitrary, because they're in the same franchise.

Too fuckin' bad, that's what's going on. It's not a big deal, don't die on this hill, go for a walk, go do something fun, go find something that makes you laugh.

As Julie said, that's what's happening right now and you can't change it.

Source materials and adaptations are not the same thing just because they share name and story. Same franchise sure, but different enough to be treated separately, so it's not arbitrary.

If you and a bunch of people drew a comic together, then an animation studio composed of completely different people animated the same story but changed things about it, are the two things the same product?

Any person with critical thinking skills would say no.

Are they really different enough when share largely the same story and many of the same characters?

Leave out the anime if you want, but Toriyama directly worked on DBS's manga, which continues the story after the original manga.

I repeat

If you and a bunch of people drew a comic together, then an animation studio composed of completely different people with different interpretation of what you drew, animated the same story but changed things about it, are the two things the same product?
Any person with critical thinking skills would say no.

Even if you adapt the same exact story, the artistic direction of the adaptation will inevitably alter the product to the point where no, it is not the same thing anymore.

People understand this notion pretty well when it comes to books and movies. It's the same thing with anime and manga, different mediums = different products.

Just because anime is usually more faithful to manga than movies are to books, it doesn't mean it's the same thing.

So back to the prior example, if you wanted to celebrate what YOU drew, THAT particular portion of work, then there would be an event about the comic.
And if they wanted to celebrate the portion of work that the other people from the animation studio worked on, then it's a different event.

Not enough to justify creating separate polls for the anime and manga. Same plot and same characters. The most popular characters will be the same in both mediums.

They don't care. This isn't the 4D chess you think it is. They're celebrating the 1984-1995 comic series' 40th anniversary. They'll celebrate the anime separately so that they can sell two different products. There's nothing repeating yourself on a forum is going to do about it. You can be doing something better with your time.

It seems the problem here is you're not understanding WHAT thty are celebrating and WHY, or even how these things work behind the scenes.
You do know there's different companies behind manga and anime right? Different people that worked? Different people that get paid? It's not just "the dragon ball company" like you seem to think.

I did my best to dumb down the explanation so that even a child could understand it, Julie also hit the nail on the head, the rest is up to you.

Sorry if it's gonna sound harsh, but anyone who understands how the world works, how products and indudstries work, and in this case, how art works (because as much as you keep insisting that they're the same story so it's the same thing, it's simply objectively not true) would not have the same doubts as you right now: you need to gain some more knowledge on this before you talk about it.

Not expert levels of knowledge, but at least the basics, so you avoid sounding ignorant

I understand what they're doing and why they're doing it.

My point is just that it's arbitrary and pointless. You can disagree.

words falling on deaf ears it seems.

If you actually understood something here, you wouldn't be having a problem with it.

If there was an event celebrating the lord of the rings books, would you also say "they should also include the movies otherwise it's arbitrary and pointless" or would you recognize that it's an event for THAT particular piece of media, like any other reasonable person would? What's so difficult to understand here?

The amount of love for Cell I'm seeing, especially from the Japanese side of the fandom, is shocking. I'm glad that more people are coming around to the handsome bugman <3. I've been spliting my votes between him and Freeza. I want them to go beyond the 9 and 10 spot.

Yeah, it's so cool to see Cell getting so much attention. One would think that he didn't have a large following with the way that Super basically ignored him, but I'm hoping that this poll sends a message that there might be more to mine from his character.

That's strange. Every time I vote on one of my devices, it displays the last character I voted for, along with my age and gender already filled out.

The apparent hate Cell gets always baffled me. And I can only assume it’s some weird byproduct of fans taking “Toriyama planned for 19 and 20 to be the main villains” too seriously

I don't poke around too much in that regard, but it's definitely surprising to me considering all of the supposed popularity of Super Saiyan 2 Gohan's first appearance. Somebody should have encouraged Toriyama to add more pathos to Gohan being confronted with Cell Max in Super Hero, it would have actually made his appearance in that film good.

It has been a while since I am here, so I just found out today. I voted for Vegetto today.

Thank you for sharing, this was really fun.

I am in my late 30s btw.
