He's more of a John Connor ripoff.

I think you mean Kyle Reese. John didn't go back in time.

He could be a bit of both. Trunks and John were both the ones who ultimately saved their respective futures, after fighting a war for years.
In a way Goku is the Sarah Connor in this situation; he's the one who's survival must be assured for the sake of the future.

I agree with the Terminator being a significant inspiration. There are plently of references to the first two movies. Time travel, Androids, John Connor's haircut, both the Androids and the Terminator arrive on May 12... And Toriyama referenced The Terminator previously in the series, during the Red Ribbon arc.

It should be noted that Terminator 2 didn’t hit Japanese theaters until two months AFTER Trunks made his manga debut. Toriyama would have likely not known much about the movie other than tv spots and publicity ads in magazines. John Connor would have probably had zero influence on Trunks character. Stuff like the haircut was just the style back. Future Trunks obvious inspiration is Kyle Reese and even then only in the sense they’re the man who came from the future trying to stop the uprising of machines. Fans really oversell how much the Artificial Human arc is like Terminator. It’s pretty theadbare. The basic premise is the obvious inspiration and there’s the May 12th reference and that’s kind of it.

It is well known that Toriyama was rich. And he was a fan of Hollywood movies. Alien, Terminator 2 and Back to the Future heavily influenced his work. Before globalization only upper-class people had access to culture from other countries. I believe Toriyama took advantage of that and brought American lore to manga. Other mangaka from the 80s did it too, it was sort of a trend.

But globalization was already a thing in the 80s, you didn't need to be rich to know Hollywod movies
