Anyone think Dragon Ball should incorporate grappling into their fight choreography?
So let me explain where this thought came from. There is an amateur fighter named "death sentence", who learned how to fight by watching fictional characters on television. One such character that inspired him to pursue a career in fighting is Goku. However, death sentence would lose almost all his fights because none of the anime/cartoons ever showed how to fight on the ground (aka grappling).
In a world where the best fighters in real life tend to be wrestlers/grapplers, it seems a bit outdated that the god father of battle Shonen doesn't reflect this in their fight choreography. Simple things like a crucifix, armbar, guillotine should be incorporated in dragon ball fights to reflect the time period, where grapplers dominant the fight game. Look at all the Dagestani fighters in the UFC, who utilize their strong wrestling base and build defensive striking over it, in order to become champions.

I don't think its a good idea to include grappling in DB at all, as DB has almost always been about speed effects, energy blast, and world destroying power.
Kinda funny yet very scary that a fighter got into MMA watching Goku and thought it would work in real life.
Now if they redid the og db they could include it a little bit, like if they wanted to change some of the early fight sequences

Aesthetically, I find grappling arts quite boring, so I wouldn't enjoy it much. I would be a fan of more judo like the Broly film throw, however.
Re: Anyone think Dragon Ball should incorporate grappling into their fight choreography?
Why does Dragon Balls fight choreography need to represent any kind of modern "trends"? It's never has before. It's fights have always been about kinetic speed and dynamic movement, even without the beam spam. Not only would it be uneccesary, there'd be that certain Dragon Ball spark missing from the fights. Include throws and such, but outright grappling? Nah, mate.

Recent Dragon Ball does have modern trends to it, though. Dragon Ball Super: Broly and Dragon Ball Daima both have battles and animation styles that Dragon Ball would not have had in the 1990s. I'm not arguing for grappling, either, I just don't see how we're supposed to think of battles like this being anything but an extension of a modern focus on cinematography, effects animation, character acting and choreography.Brodes wrote: Sat Jan 17, 2026 8:17 pm Why does Dragon Balls fight choreography need to represent any kind of modern "trends"? One filler episode by Last House of ssj Goku vs Freeza right after the episode the wish was made had some pretty good grappling.

Goku is a master of all Earth's martial arts. Of course he knows how to grapple. Even if there were moves he never saw before, he only needs to see them once in order to master them.
Some grappling moments off the top of my head:
Breaking Piccolo's arm would be almost pointless.
Strangling Freeza or an android would be pointless.
This results in Dragon Ball fights taking place across extreme distances, where characters will flash-step closer to get off a quick combo, before dashing back to distance.
Some grappling moments off the top of my head:
- Goku puts Tenshinhan in the boston crab.
Second fight (in the anime) Goku and Tenshinhan go through a whole sequence of submission moves.
Goku puts Raditz in the full nelson.
Goku and Vegeta do a lot of handfighting and grappling in the anime.
SSJ4 Goku takes back control on Super 17 (he can't strangle 17 cuz 17 is an android, but the back control is solid)
Ultra Instinct Goku is using judo on the bigger and stronger Jiren
