Re: Dragon Ball Genkida Matsuri 2026 on january 25th will have Dragon Ball announcements
What I hope to see:
A triple-A game, which can either be a new title or a sequel to an existing game.
The alleged Super remake/remaster, as a cleaned up version of the show can go a long way in improving it.
The return of the Super manga to finish what Toryama started all the way back in 2013 with the Black Freeza arc.
Bonus: A new movie set after the end of Z, but that's probably hoping for too much at this point.
What I expect to see:
A mobile game.
A web anime tie-in to Super Divers.
Another "remastered" home release of Z.
Bonus: More tie-in chapters to Superhero.

Nah, Toyotaro said it ended officially. No more.
Also nah, that game has no storyline of it's own.

It won't surprise me if we get a Daima movie with them adding Garlic Jr, Lord Slug, and Janemba to the Demon Realm lore.

Considering how long it takes to make these movies, and considering Daima ended less than a year ago, I think it's very unlikely that we'll get any announcement related to that series. I don't think your idea is out of realm of possibility, just that it might be a little soon for it.Hellspawn28 wrote: Sat Jan 24, 2026 3:36 pm It won't surprise me if we get a Daima movie with them adding Garlic Jr, Lord Slug, and Janemba to the Demon Realm lore.
Re: Dragon Ball Genkida Matsuri 2026 on january 25th will have Dragon Ball announcements
The only way that there is going to be a Dragon Ball Daima movie is if they just re-edit the series into a compilation film and even then, I don't think it's likely that that will happen. Dragon Ball hasn't really done compilation films like that yet. That being said, I also want film remakes of the Universe Six and Zamasu arcs, so, you know, what the fuck do I know? lol

If Super returns, I will bet that we will get a retelling of DBS Broly for people who didn't see the movie. You can probably retell that movie in probably like 8-10 episodes.

To be honest it would be surprising if any previous villain is rebooted at this point. The whole appeal of Broly being reimagined and other returning characters was because the original author was doing it and not just someone else at Toei. If Toei is ever brings back a characters, it'll probably be treated the same way in filler, GT, and Heroes and the same character but stronger.Hellspawn28 wrote: Sat Jan 24, 2026 3:36 pm It won't surprise me if we get a Daima movie with them adding Garlic Jr, Lord Slug, and Janemba to the Demon Realm lore.

I feel like if there's new anime it'll have to be some type of retreading old ground stuff because I don't think the various factions have come to enough of an agreement with each other and where they feel bold enough to make a new story without Toriyama (unless they stretch the truth and try to label something new as postmortem Toriyama unreleased works).
That is to say I can picture them doing a new Cooler movie before doing anything with Moro/inventing a new antagonist.
Still tentatively looking forward to this event though--I need some good news for a change. (Not that I think I'll get it. )

I mean it's possible Toriyama had something else in the works when he died. It's only been 2 years. Although I wouldn't be shocked if Daima was it.Chuquita wrote: Sat Jan 24, 2026 5:18 pm I feel like if there's new anime it'll have to be some type of retreading old ground stuff because I don't think the various factions have come to enough of an agreement with each other and where they feel bold enough to make a new story without Toriyama (unless they stretch the truth and try to label something new as postmortem Toriyama unreleased works).
There's always the 2 manga arcs of his they haven't done. Or any of the other stuff. A Jaco the Galactic Patrolman miniseries could be fun.
The day is finally here!!! Exciting.
Re: Dragon Ball Genkida Matsuri 2026 on january 25th will have Dragon Ball announcements
The problem with the quality of older projects that did not involve Toriyama was never the fact that they didn't involve Toriyama, it's that they're built to be inoffensive from the outset. They don't rely on just letting the staff have a vision and executing it without tying their hands. This is also largely the issue with what Toriyama was doing in the present with Dragon Ball Super: things ultimately did not advance much in the story and with the characters because he was himself not that type of writer but also in part because the production committee didn't want the characters to become unrecognizable.
Like, I'm ultimately an optimist, but the truth of the matter is that fans have this way of nebulously referring to 'Toei' or the 'writers', as if the former doesn't know what it's doing and the latter somehow has any real power.
Obviously, I don't know what the next project is going to be, but the chances of it being good without just letting a director and his head writer do their own thing with it will always be small.

Dragon Ball Super always seemed allergic to taking risks, even when Toriyama was alive. It’s all very safe and corporate compared to classic Dragon Ball.
Re: Dragon Ball Genkida Matsuri 2026 on january 25th will have Dragon Ball announcements
Yeah, that's bad and should be rectified. There's a lot of fun material in the series as-is but it's underserved and it makes for a disappointing project. Until future works are willing to commit, we're going to be stuck with character arcs that feel undercooked despite fun set-ups.WittyUsername wrote: Sat Jan 24, 2026 5:59 pm Dragon Ball Super always seemed allergic to taking risks, even when Toriyama was alive. Re: Dragon Ball Genkida Matsuri 2026 on january 25th will have Dragon Ball announcements
I feel that applies to every franchise brought back years later. Even if the studio were free to do what they want they're unlikely to take risks and stray too far from what made the franchise popular to begin with. I think the few examples of a studio doing that haven't performed well.JulieYBM wrote: Sat Jan 24, 2026 5:32 pm The problem with the quality of older projects that did not involve Toriyama was never the fact that they didn't involve Toriyama, it's that they're built to be inoffensive from the outset. Fanfiction might be a good example. A DB, Star Wars, etc fanfic can take risks and go in any direction because it's free so doesn't really matter how many people decide to read it. Still fanfiction is mostly a niche audience so what appeals to those fans might not appeal to the general fan base. It might only be like 0.1% of the fanbase that are interested in those kinds of fanfics and most popular fanfics have to somewhat "feel" like the original.
Re: Dragon Ball Genkida Matsuri 2026 on january 25th will have Dragon Ball announcements
Fanworks are good examples, I agree.
Both Toyotaro and Naho Oishi's fan-comic output included stuff we wouldn't see in their official projects.

Re: Dragon Ball Genkida Matsuri 2026 on january 25th will have Dragon Ball announcements
You're correct, although I would offer that this is an issue that also extends to a series in its original run, too. Dragon Ball animated projects were always at their best when they were doing things that Toriyama wouldn't and always at their worst when they were trying to course correct back to matching the comic.Skar wrote: Sat Jan 24, 2026 6:46 pmI feel that applies to every franchise brought back years later. You're also correct about fan fiction. Toriko Episode #99 and One Piece Episode #590 are a poor crossover in large part because they want Toriko, Luffy and Gokuu to get along, rather than showing how their personalities and their histories would have them coming into conflict with one another in pretty serious ways. This is largely done for 'protecting the brand' and selling merchandise, rather than simply trying to tell a good and interesting story. The cool thing about fan fiction is, you don't have to play by those rules. If you hone your skills enough, you can create cool and exciting fan projects that don't worry about playing by an IP holders' rules. I use this example all the time, but I a huge fan of Pokemon: Festival of Champions in this regard. It's a fan manga from a professional manga writer and artist and tells the fairly simple story of Red, Green and Blue at the Kantou League while intercutting flashbacks that flesh out their character arcs, as well as the arcs of the other competitors. The storytelling is really evocative—I'll leave it to people to just read it rather than spoil my favorite moments—but it's also got really fun battle strategies on the level of those written by Tomioka Atsuhiro in the anime. The crowning jewel that typically gets most people to read the comic is the amazing art, too. Even more so than Dragon Ball, Pokemon as a franchise feels even more restrained on content, so this little fan comic hits harder because of how it feels like it skillfully breaks the rules.
Anyway, on the subject of the stream and what will be announced...I'm actually going to be hanging out with friends, so I might not wind up watching it lol

Remember folks... keep your expectations low. I mean... really low. So if you're disappointed, it's what you expected, but if it's something genuinely good, you'll be pleasantly surprised.

I want to believe it's a new movie. Reminder that the last movie was 4 years ago (yes, 2022 was 4 years ago), meaning that the gap between now and Super Hero is the same as the gap between Super Hero and Broly.
But I am fully ready for a new gacha mobile game announcement.
Akira Toriyama, DBS vol.4 joint interview with ToyotaroAt his core Zamasu is good like Shin, though I guess you could say he was so fastidious that it backfired. But you know, for this "Future Trunks Arc" you had to depict Zamasu and Trunks' inner conflict, right? If this was back when I was drawing the manga myself then I doubt if I could have done it. I mean, I'm not very good at depicting the characters' psychology on the page. So this all came together because now I only have to think up the story. [...] On my own, I doubt I would have been able to express Zamasu's fall to the dark side.

Lets see how the card game is gonna ravage my wallet this year. I thought I was done buying trading cards but that Manga Booster set pulled me back in. Got a whole binder full of just stuff from those 2 sets.
I'm trying to keep open minded about whatever the show and game announcements are. I don't have any specific expectations. I won't even trust my gut reaction to whatever the show is, my initial to reaction to Daima was "wtf why" and that turned out to be a pretty fun time for the most part.
Dokkan and Legends part will be nostalgic because I haven't played either of those games in a couple years.
I'm hype to see the musical performances! It will be awesome to see Kageyama involved in Dragon Ball again!

They're displaying never-before-seen Toriyama art at this event, including SS4 Goku and SS3 Vegeta from Daima.

What if it turns out to be a compilation film of Super's history rather than a remake?
