Crazy idea for a new DB physical release
Crazy idea for a new DB physical release
If you know me, I often think of crazy things... well here is today's!
A new DB 'early days' blu-ray collection consisting of BLT dub, Ocean/Saban dub with the TOM edit episodes, and the BLT dub of DB movie 1, and the three Ocean Pioneer movies would be great. heck even add in Harmony Gold dub (the 5 episodes and the stitched together movie they did).
Now, for the realism, this would probably be very unlikely, with the various rights. I think most of them reverted back to Toei's control, but would be cool to release this. I say price it £90 for RRP, and if you preorder it's £85, and it'd be a limited run of say 1000-1500. Let me know what you think!

Re: Crazy idea for a new DB physical release
I'd love to see it happen if only Crunchyroll had ambition and released more than just the new hotness on physical media.
I don't think rights should be an issue, other than the Harmony Gold dub, which TOEI probably owns now, but they'd be crazy to not want it included even for the collector's market, same with the other dubs.
I've said the Saban dub needs another release, but so does BLT as the episodes have had nothing since the original VHS/DVD sets.

Do you have any info about international non-English broadcasts about the Dragon Ball anime or manga translations/editions? Please message me. Researching for a future book with Dragon Ball scholar Derek Padula

Re: Crazy idea for a new DB physical release
No one beats me on crazy ideas OP, but nice try.
I understand the attachment to the American dubs, but you guys need to understand that the rest of the world would be happy with the original Japanese Audio and then subtitles to whatever language it is needed. That should be the official Toei Animation Blu Ray release that every Dragon Ball fan should treasure. All of that money should go to Toei.
Then, each country shall get their own version of the Blu Ray including the audio for their region. All of that money would go one part for Toei Animation (because they own Dragon Ball) and another percentage would go for the people who took care of the dub work. In USA they could have the two versions, as you mention it. Then whoever wants to buy those versions shall do it, and those who only want the official version won't. They could even sell the versions on pre-sale (like the do for videogames) if they are so scared of investing money on something ¨risky¨.

Re: Crazy idea for a new DB physical release
Various rights are a non-issue . Most of those were produced under the company formerly known as Funimation anyways. Harmony Gold would have had to relinquish assets of their dub to Toei when their license expired as they have no legal right to Dragon Ball after that. We can surmise that Toei at least provided Funimation with the Harmony Gold scripts since they recycled a lot of dialog for the first 5 episodes and maybe the actual episodes for references? But 30+ years those masters probably rotted away in a storage somewhere and I would be surprised if Toei or Crunchymation has them anymore.
The real problem, like Ireland said, is Crunchyroll has no interest in giving physical release to anything but recent hot IP. They also seem set on the remaster Funi dub being the only English dub that exists for streaming.

They should do a release that has all the grainy old fansubs put on a disc complete with excessive and unnecessary swering.
