Back in the old days, this site was my one source for info. When I was watching the Frieza Saga reruns, I was reading up on the Cell Saga. When Trunks went SS, I was reading up the Buu Saga. By the time the Androids appeared, I was learning all about GT. Cell's grand entrance? I was learning about the movies and TV specials.

Now, my point here is this - this site was one of the best things that ever happened to me, because it got me into DBZ which in turn got me into anime, which has changed my life (and outlook on it) considerably, as nerdy as it sounds it's true and there's no denying it. My question though, is this - Was this site truly as great as I remember it, or did it only seem so because I was just learning about the franchise? If it were still up now, and I visited it with all the knowledge I now have, how would it hold up?

I don't wanna destroy my ideallic image of the site, but I gotta know.

Compared to other Dragonball sites of the time, Planet Namek was one of the better websites due to it's more accurate info (especially with Power Levels), manga chapter summaries, clean layout, large forum community, and current news. Of course, there were other websites out there with similar features and maybe some extras that PN didn't have, but considering the vast number of Dragonball websites that existed in the height of Dragonball Z's popularity (it was topping search engines for "most searched") the good sites made up about 3% of them all.

By today's standards, PN would still be a good site for it's manga chapter summaries but it wouldn't offer much else that you can't find on Wikipedia or this site.

Didn't they also have zip copies of the manga volumes that hadn't been translated by Viz at the time?

I'm pretty sure that's where I got my copy of the last volume's scans from back in the day.

I think they did have some scans, but they were mirrored to read American style. So, I didn't really pay attention to them because the art style looked kind of awkward when flipped.

At at time when most of the DragonBall websites were really unprofessional, Planetnamek.com was pretty much the trusted source. I don't think people took any DragonBall news to seriously untill it was on Planetnamek.com. Anyone remember Mr.E?

Bleh, every time I hear about Planet Namek I feel a bit left out.

I never visited the site, because we got our internet connection later than most people. When I wanted to visit it they already quit the site.

I'm kinda curious about this site though.

It really was a great site, and a nice message board community. I visited daily back in the late 90's/early 00's, until it was closed down during my senior year of high school. Seems like it was only yesterday.

Castor's site was "Vegeta Insane" which later became "Ginga GIRI GIRI."

As for Planet Namek, it was definitely one of the first major sites I visited. Though, if I remember correctly, the "power levels" were mostly made up and therefore not from any real source.

Other than that, great site.

Glad to know that the site's quality wasn't just due to my noobish-ness at the time.

What ever happened to it anyway, does anyone know why it had to shut down?

On the site runner's side, or the people going to it? I'm assuming you mean the site runner, since everyone else still remembers the site fondly.

No way, dude. They had color-coded stuff and a key to show exactly what source they referenced the power level from. One color was for math (like Vegeta's BP x 10 for Oozaru), one was for manga, one was for Daizenshuu or something, and one was for anime. After Trunks' BP of 5 before killing Freeza, it was then noted (in bold) that the levels from there are sheer guesses).

What made PN popular was the front news they had on the page considering MrE had tons of inside connections to people at FUNi who also wanted to use PN to reach out more to the fans. The actual info was ok at best.

I still owe MrE $3000 in hosting fees....

I liked PN because it was one of the few sites back in 98/99 that wasnt filled with animated gifs, un-organized images, annoying MIDIs or links to full episode downloads.

Yeah and the constantly updated news, me being a dubbie at the time.

Oh man. I loved Planet Namek back in 99'.

I remember downloading clips from the new Funi DVDs on my 56k AOL connection. It would take all afternoon to download a few meg clip. Then my friend down the street got Comcast cable modem (@home back then), and I would pretty much spend all day at their house downloading DBZ clips. Haha.

good times.

I used to download the subitled clips they had, back when I was sick of waiting for Toonami to air new episodes. I remember in 2000 when I first got Comcast the first thing I did was download a shit load of them.
